Photos

Hi everyone!

Well, I'm not the greatest expert on computers and after having been a visitor to this site for a long time, I have only learnt to post photos now! Oh well, better late than never, and I hope you enjoy the photos I have put on my photo gallery. To see them, you can either go to the home page, or click on my name above this message.

Let me know what you think!

Nice photos but I bet you have lots more. Why not load them on a free site such as photobucket.com then post the link here.

HONDA It is a shame you did not like Honda, I bet you missed the historic side of the city, it has a very nice, quite nicely restored Colonial side. Try it next time you go through there.

Uploading pictures Nice pictures!! Photobucket is good and free, but it says "Currently this site is free and has minimal limitations, however donations are appreciated!" Which means that it's quite possible that the fotos you upload now will dissapear some time in the future. On this site they will stay here (and it's also free). I know it's not so easy to upload pictures, I plan to improve that sometime next year... Cheers, and thanks for sharing the pictures!

Poor but snappy

ShazCas Glad you liked the photos guys. I'll have a look at photobucket anyway, as it's free right now, so thanks for the tip atrevido. But don't worry Peter, if I do put more photos on, I'll put them on here too, because I think this site is fab!

Juanalejo, I think the reason I was never too keen on Honda was because I had been through it so may times by bus, and I never took the air-conditioned buses, so the heat was always unbearable! I remember sitting there, sweating, praying that the bus would move so that I could cool down!!! Honda - the hottest place in the world! No but seriously, I took that photo after spending a day there, and I found the people very friendly and the place very interesting. I didn't see the Colonial area, I must admit, so I must remember to go there the next time I'm there.

See ya!

welcome to the third world hey shaz,
Very nice, those kids and their donkeys is exactly what will make me want or visit Colombia. You guys don’t understand if I wanted to see that kind of stuff I would you go down to Honduran, El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua etc. why go all the way down to Colombia. Most of your pics are the same crap you see in every third world nation, I like to think that we graduated from third world to a developing nation, maybe I’m wrong. Did you see any modern cites in Colombia? Did you see well dress and beautiful women in Colombia, or all you saw were people getting around in donkeys??

donkeys elmode it appears you have a thing about donkeys
get over it man
the regular tourist that comes from any big metropolitan area even from Colombia cities finds it interesting and a step back in time when they see scenes like this.....the big building and the hustle and bustle is what they are trying to get away from.....there is absolutely nothing wrong with pictures of that sort.....find something else to argue about for god sakes

Donkey obsession Well, elmode, I have indeed seen modern cities in Colombia (and beautiful well-dressed women - not that I give a sh** - not a lesbian) In fact I lived in Bogota for years, and I have been to Cali, Medellin, Baranquilla, Bucaramanga, Manizales, Pereira, Cartagena, Pasto and Villavicencio. So I would say I do know something about Colombian cities. All these cities are very beautiful and everything, but I don't like taking photos of cities, because I'm not a city person. I grew up in the countryside, and I like mountains, beaches, rivers and forests. I don't like pollution, cars and high-rise buildings. So what's wrong with that? We don't all have the same opinion as you.

Besides, I think the best thing about Colombia is not its cities. The best thing for me is its natural parks, amazing beaches, indigenous peoples, mountains, interesting history, wildlife and so on. The landscape really is so amazing. Why would I stay in a city when I can see the wonderful Andes mountains, the Amazon rainforest and the Pacific and Caribbean coasts? It's not just me who thinks this either. On Colombian TV you can see lots of images celebratng the beauty of the Colombian countryside, the indigenous history of the country, and rural life in general.

Ok so you're from New York. Possibly you think that because a person lives in a rural place and travels by donkey, they must have a miserable life. Well, that's just not true. So people in Colombian cities have never travelled by donkey or horse, but in the countryside so many people do, and in fact their donkeys and horses are very important to them. People have been travelling by donkey for thousands of years, get over it!!!

And as I said, I'm not a city person, so seeing country life, even in a country that's different from mine, is not such a novelty. I've ridden horses all my life and have trained them.

Do you think those kids don't deserve to have their photo put on the internet, and should just be hidden under the carpet? What's wrong with Colombia having a very large rural population that lives a very different life from you? What is it that disturbs you so much about that? Or maybe you're just annoyed about your daughter's photo, which is still on the site by the way - so maybe you should just grow up.

happy rural colombians?? I hate to be a royal pain in the butt about this rural photos tourist like so much about Colombia. I think I know a little about this because I lived it. I grew up poor in Colombia, an I was not happy, believe me. Let me tell you what those kids riding those burros are felling.
They are hungry, they are thirsty, they probably have not eaten in more than a day, they can’t read or write, are probably on their way to their grandparents, a few miles away, in that incredible heat to get a small portion of rice and beans and a cup of dirty warm water. There is no food in their parents shack. They have belly worms and all other sickness but have no money to see a doctor.
The last thing they need is a person to show up with an expensive camera to take pictures of their misery for their personal amusement. They, by no means are happy. If you cared about these kids did you give them maybe $20. Dollars each? That will make them happy. A model here in the USA gets over $500 an hour a shoot, I know because both my daughter and nice model. Next time you take a picture of people like them, please put your self in their shoes, would you be happy?
The reason for posting my daughters picture is to show the typical girl from Barranquilla. The ethnic combination of many cultures. A bit of southern Spanish blood, with Indians from la Guajira and Arab, very common in my city. Nothing else.

seek help elmo it is apparent that you have a fixation about donkeys and how they represent only poor people....that's very narrow minded ... I believe you should seek out some professional help ....you have some serious childhood issues..... if you think your the only person on this planet to grow up poor .....think again....your not.....get over it

Shaz, great pictures, really capturing the feeling of those places you visited...

elmodefoque, if all you're interested in seeing is high rise buildings and hot latinas almost naked, I have the place for you: Miami. Puerto Rico and Dominican should probably also be to your liking. Stop bothering with Colombia if its complex reality and enormity make you so uncomfortable.

Hey litos
Those places you love so much I’m sure are places were your family own fincas and other properties and use the extremely poor Colombians to work the fields for a miserable pesos a month while you travel the world. While they live that life 24/7 for ever, you get to view way overhead as you jet off to another destination, and look down a your beautiful scenic land but don’t see the sweat, blood and tears of those so called happy campesinos.
I bet you never served the military for that country you love so much, because your family jetted you off to study outta Colombia. I know many like you.

Assumptions Hi Elmode,

Listen, I know I've been accused of this on this site before, but you really shouldn't make so may assumptions about people you've never met. You don't know anything about me.

My camera certainly wasn't expensive ($20), I've never used dollars in my life, and I didn't have any money to give anyone at the time. The kids didn't mind, and I'm glad I took the photo, because I can remember meeting them, and being in their village.

You may have had a hard time, and I know a lot of people in Colombia do have a very hard time. But those kids had eaten well, and they were not thirsty. Because they live in the country, they may not have many things, but they have food.

Do not assume that I am some stupid rich tourist - you don't know me at all.

I’m in a silly mode this week, don't care to discuss this, but if I was harsh once again I apologize. Damn, I spend all my time apologizing to a lotta people here, maybe you're all correct about me. I’m one big hairy ass hole. That day I went through painful removal of my butt hairs and was in a bad mood. Sorry!!
