I've rented a two bedroom house for $250 USD in Puerto Vallarta in a regular barrio (not the worst and not the best) during high season for months at a time and that was just 3 years ago in 2005 and I stayed at (appropriately for this part of the site) named "Hotel Cartagena de las Indias" in Puerto Vallarta for $15 USD a night for about 3 days until I found the rental in the local publication "Mano-a-Mano" weekly.

I cannot believe that there's nothing comparable in Bogota or Cali or Medellin... Or is it that the gringos are too afraid to live in the barrio?

True but they are always too drunk to have sex anyway. Sometimes they go with Titofijo and truthseeker to San Diego to watch them pick up hookers. Titofijo brings his armed guards and Spanish interpreters to make sure everything goes smooth. You never know when one of those glue huffers are going to knock you over the head :)

Most backpackers don't share enough passion for Colombia nor the knowldege required to give the consistent feedback people come looking for here. The expert advice given on this site comes from people who have lived in Colombia or are Colombians with in depth knowledge of the country and it's inner workings. How many backpackers could dispense detailed advice on Colombia specific subjects such as: visas, finances and taxes, Colombian law, real estate, low to high class restaurants, political analisys, language and slang, divorce, tourism, and on and on.

Nothing against backpackers. I am sometimes envious that I can't pick up a backpack and head off into the wilds of South America on 30 bucks a day or a year. But let's face it, the average backpacker profile is not one of detailed Colombian knowledge nor the desire to check into PBH hourly.

This site is extremely knowlegable and nowhere will you receive better feedback on a question. If you ever get thrown in jail in Colombia, you might wish you had the palanca of some of these "sex tourists". I do think that kicking people like GIB and Rubito off the site is extreme. They know the country. And I really don't see any pertinent information on this site directing anybody to some mysterious underground sex industry. You don't need this site for that.

So happy backpacking Kevin. Have a cold one for me in Peru or a chicha in Bolivia.

With regard to the comment about Rubito, GIB and Buggy, I vehemently disagree! Rubito and GIB at least live in Colombia and can share their perceptions of difficulties one may experience with the Colombia experience. Buggy was a nuisance who needed psychological counseling.

Depending on perspective, I think I have the best/worst timing.

I took a break from the site for a few months and missed all the GIB activity in January through April. Next, I went Colombia in June for a short trip and I think all my ATM withdrawals were about 1650 COP to the dollar (ouch!). Then I was out of town for about a week to celebrate the 4th of July and my parent's 50th anniversary and whatever happened with Rubito I missed it, (I know a little about the end result but not what led up to it).

So, if you want to know the worst time to travel to Colombia or when the next member blow up is going to occur, check with me first.

I want to clarify something about the whole sex tourist matter.
If you'd live in Colombia, and possibly have children in Colombia, you would be concerned about sex tourism as we people living here.

It is not about hating people, or generically wanting to stigmatize some gringos.
What I say is that there is a decent way to do things and sexuality has to be enjoyed with privacy.
This is usually forgotten by gringos. Latins are different in that.
Some habits cause problems and bad reputation to us people living here.

Some months ago, a woman who works in Colmedica Santa Marta, made the favour to help me with a payment, going to the bank so I could avoid the queue.
She was kind and I invited her to sit 10 minutes for a drink afterwards. I noticed her discomfort. I asker her why and she was sorry but admitted "you see, here in the centre town they know me, and seeing me sitting with a gringo at a bar for a drink would make them think that I am a prepago".
She was fat and ugly, by the way... :)

Six months ago, I rented my penthouse at Lleras to four Americans. It was something I did not want to do, first time that I rent to gringos, but I felt... ok, maybe it is just me.
