Peter... PBH and the P.C. Police

Peter, if this is the new P.C. PBH, then you may as well delete my account.

I particularly distain situations where people are allowed to make sexist, racist or other antagonistic remarks while others are not allowed a defense. Supposedly, PBH encourages intelligent debate, but recently, a comment of mine was deleted that was a simple rebuttal to stupid, sexist definition of “Manhood" by one of your female posters. I don’t know who deleted my comment, nor do I care, but I take gender-based attacks seriously and felt compelled to respond. If PBH is intent on fostering a biased, feminist, P.C. environment, then I want nothing to do with it. (I get enough of that crap here in the States.)

It makes little difference to me (or you, I suppose) whether I post here or not, but I’ll note anyway that you would be losing one of your longest-standing, most highly educated and most well-traveled posters (for whatever that’s worth)... furthermore, I challenge anyone to find an instance where I violated any of the PBH rules.

Part of the novel was written from the prospective of “Benjy", in a stream-of-consciousness narrative that your style reminds me of… I rarely understood what he was trying to say either.

That's funny. Feminist??? Yeah right. Sexist yes, but you're barking up the wrong gender tree. Remember, this is the site where a man gets mangled by some mafioso scum and his novia gets blamed, to cite the most recent example!

Unbelievable how one of our most "highly educated" and worldly members manages to shoot his own arguments right on the foot.

gatogris says on Monday December 17th, 2007 21:28:

I suppose a certain amount of sexism is unavoidable, since we all rotate around gender difference, compelled as if by gravity to desire what is different. What is interesting is how much it can sting, how men can feel literally emasculated by tactics used by women to assert strength and independence, and how women can feel profound humiliation when men try to project their virility to each other (and to women) by sexualizing casual chit-chat.

Neither of these sorts of behaviour is necessarily sexist in an aggressive sense, but their consequences can lead to escalations that can damage relationships beyond repair.

Gender struggles are nothing new - the Bard was making ugly comments like this 400 years ago "A woman moved is like a fountain troubled,/Muddy, ill-seeming, thick, bereft of beauty."

While I don't buy insipid pseudo-intellectual statements about Mars and Venus, sometimes it can be a little disappointing that after millenia of intimacy, after being existentially intertwined, we still don't seem to understand each other all that great. But then again, maybe that's part of the charm.

I for one hope the shrew is never tamed.

Albatross says on Tuesday December 18th, 2007 5:19:

Yes, sexism IS unavoidable - perhaps even welcome (viva la difference); my criticism is not that men/women make sexist comments, but when men (or women) are not even allowed a simple defense of themselves or their gender.

Someone once said that Political-Correctness is “Tyranny with Manners". Anyone who is still awake in America (... there don't seem to be many), is aware of the fact that women (and other “victimized" groups) can more-or-less get away with anything here, while WASP men (the “victimizers") have to constantly apologize just for living. And when we make a comment that just MAYBE it’s not always our fault, women jump down our throats.

Apparently PBH now has two women moderators. As far as I can tell, Desi, while personally a feminist, has (to her credit) been fairly liberal in what comments she has allowed to stand. The other, I have less respect for.

My purpose in starting this thread was to find out if a feminist bias is to become institutionalized here at PBH. Desi’s assertation that as soon as she gets “back from the mines", she will delete this thread, pretty much answers my question. (Why she wants a copy, I can only guess)

I don't care if I have your respect or not, honestly, I am just trying to do a thankless job that I guess absolutely nothing in return for. I really have no major problems on this board except with you.

I you think you are such a great unbiased person Albatross, by all means, I offer you my mod gig. I'll step down and you can have it, since you think you are a pillar of wisdom and think you will do a far better job than me.

manINred says on Tuesday December 18th, 2007 6:21:

What a load of crap. If you feel emasculated because of a comment made defining colombian men (not even all men) then go ahead and leave, no one's forcing you to stay. If you don't agree with the content, use logic and coherency to state your point of view. The females on this site ignore the daily sexist anti-female crap on a daily basis... beware of the evil slutty colombiana novia... whose ass is bigger, beyonce's or shakira's... stereotypical blonde (female) being retarded... woman gets raped let's blame it on her... etc... proving that they don't jump down anyone's throat for the much worse sexism that goes the other way.

And the fact that you automatically label these people 'feminists' (oh have i heard that one before!!!) when they make offhand even arguably non-sexist remarks implies
that the sexism card is being dealt to the wrong person.

female bias institutionalized here? hahaha what a joke.

I never said I'm unbiased... I'm as biased as hell... and I expect others to be as well.
I just want a level playing field, and the freedom to speak one's mind.
And I never said you're a tyrant. As I did say, I posted a simple criticism of a definition of “Manhood" you posted, whereupon you promptly deleted it and spun off into left field: “Albatross, this is an ages old spat that has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with you. I know you love to take any opportunity under the sun to attack me, but please kindly refrain from doing so"… whatever.

As for moderator, I don’t think I’d make a good one because I would let just about anything stand.

I never meant that I intended to delete this thread (I just thought it would probably have disappeared by the time I got home from work today).

Albatross, just a couple of things: there's a basic misunderstanding related to colombiche's comment of rules of manhood (for Colombian men); it was a tongue-in-cheek reminder to monpirri about all those times he's been complaining about moderation and other things, both here and Cblog. That's how I understood it anyway, not as a sexist comment directed at all men on this board.

Yes, we have been putting up with a lot of sexist garbage here; I personally have little problem with a bunch of old dudes drooling over videos of semi-nude gals (nothing off my plate and I don't even know you people) but we're trying to run a community forum here, please! We can't have that if you old pervos scare away our female contrubutors with your boring BS. The locker-room days of PBH are over. If you guys think it's a pity you're welcome to look somewhere else. No hard feelings.

So, what do we have here: a bunch of people who want to talk about Colombia, it's people, it's customs and habits, it's scenery and touristy spots, its culture (music, dance, partying, food, family life, religion etc). People from all over the world, every continent and island world, from every age group and from every walk of life. People with many native tongues, all expressing themselves in English or Spanish.People with specific interests, people with wide scope of interests. I am committed to making this site even better, more accessible to everybody, less intimidating to newbies, even better source of information to people googling for specifics about Colombia.

And, Albatross, I have never been a feminist. Don't label me without knowing me. Your prefab concepts don't fit because I'm not a product of your culture.

Last but not least, slguy and manINred, thank you for your vote of confidence and your sobering insights.

The exchange would probably be more civil, polite and politically correct then anything we see posted.

I have the feeling that many people who post, do so secure in the knowledge that nobody knows who they really are. It's easy to hurl dirt clods over a fence. It's easy to lay out a land mine and go hide behind a wall and listen for the explosion.

Bryan came home from the pub late one Friday evening stinking drunk, as
he often did, and crept into bed beside his wife who was already
asleep.

He gave her a peck on the cheek and fell to sleep. When he awoke he
found a strange man standing at the end of his bed wearing a long
flowing white robe. "Who the hell are you?" demanded Bryan, "and what
are you doing in my bedroom?".

The mysterious Man answered "This isn't your bedroom and I'm St Peter".
Bryan was stunned "You mean I'm dead?!!! That can't be! I have so much
to live for, I haven't said goodbye to my family.... you've got to send
me back straight away".

St Peter replied, "Yes you can be reincarnated but there is a catch.
We can only send you back as a dog or a hen."

Bryan was devastated, but knowing there was a farm not far from his
house, he asked to be sent back as a hen.

In a flash of light, he was covered in feathers and clucking around
pecking the ground. "This ain't so bad" he thought until he felt this
strange feeling welling up inside him.

The farmyard rooster strolled over and said "So you're the new hen, how
are you enjoying your first day here?"
"It's not so bad" replies Bryan, "but I have this strange feeling
inside
like I'm about to explode".
"You're ovulating" explained the rooster, "don't tell me you've never
laid an egg before?"
"Never" replies Bryan "Well just relax and let it happen" He did, and
after a few uncomfortable seconds, an egg pops out from under his tail.

An immense feeling of relief swept over him and his emotions got the
better of him as he experienced motherhood for the first time. When he
laid his second egg, the feeling of happiness was overwhelming and he
knew that being reincarnated as a hen was the best thing that ever
happened to him... ever!!!

The joy kept coming and as he was just about to lay his third egg he
felt an enormous SMACK! on the back of his head. He heard his wife
screaming,
"Bryan!! Wake up you drunken bastard, you're shitting on the bed!!!"

No, it is clearly not you.
But, keep in mind that that is (ostensibily) an International site and as such often cannot uphold the values of one culture without offending the values of another. What may be a virtue in New York may be a vice in Calcutta.

What I find endlessly ironic is how often those who so loudly profess "tolerance" and "diversity" are so quick to dismiss opinions they oppose. And it seems to get worse every day.

“Democracy - a pathetic belief in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance." - H.L. Mencken

manINred says on Thursday December 20th, 2007 12:26:

But there's nothing wrong with dismissing an opinion, is there? unless you censure it, which is barely ever the case here, and if it is, almost guaranteed it will be for good measure. It is the diversity of opinion and insight that makes this site worth anything, quite frankly.

Albatross you make a good point regarding upholding values that are culturally divisive, however that does not make them exclusionary. The Nazism example was an extreme example, but a relevant one nonetheless of exclusionary opinion. After all the premise for the practice is cultural homogeneity. However if one person agrees with abortion and another one doesn't that could represent a divide in culture or faith, but debate can ensue, thus a 'culturally offensive' concept can be rationalized and discussed.

"Liberal 'diversity and tolerance' is only extended to certain well-heeled sections of society who masquerade as oppressed minorities. Members of unfashionable groups, such as Christians, Jews, serving soldiers etc. are the subject of ridicule, abuse and vulgar stereotyping."

You know Kalder, I was going to start disagreeing with you adamently, but looking at real life, while perhaps not as drastic here in Canada as that, you have a point. But I don't think anyone should form solid opinions of those advocating 'liberal diversity and tolerance', because whilejust as many 'extremists' (if you will) from that group will tend to make those unfashionable groups the subject of ridicule, abuse and vulgar stereotying as you put it, most would extend their notions of diversity and tolerance equally to every segment of the population, with the exception of unacceptable neo-nazis or Danish FARC T-shirt wearing kids.

What is unfortunate is that often the most extreme and xenophobic members of each group are also the most intolerant, vocal and misrepresentative. This of course leads to complete misrepresentation of what each group stands for, from 'liberal types' to perhaps the catholic church
