PBH 10 Year Anniversary

[Peter~~~ feel free to participate! =) ]

Since the 10 year anniversary in 2008 for Peter’s PoorButHappy Colombia Guide is approaching at year’s end, a discussion on its original purpose and goals versus what it has “morphed into after nearly 10 years later would be interesting. Since PBH means different things to each of the diverse membership on today’s PBH cast, the comments will probably be quite entertaining, some even antagonistic, and some even thought provoking. Some, for example, may see it as one or any combination of the following suggestions:

1. source of information: regarding Colombia, Colombian people and their culture.
2. source of entertainment and amusement, though not necessarily Colombia(n)-related
3. source of information on visas and immigration
4. information on travel planning

And, where do you think it will be in the year 2108 for its 20th anniversary?

Other than Peter, are there any “PBH Charter Members still reading and/or posting on PBH? Who gets the recognition as the “most senior PBH member still participating here?

The Winning Entry will be awarded 1 bazillion “PBH pesos….you know, the ones with portrait of the Gringo Tourist on the front….

I know about a few old-timer and adela is one of them...also mzzmerized and perhaps even atrevido.

Before 2003 I used to read and post too, but occasionally, especially towards the end of that period. I remember reading PBH a long time before posting and that was before 2003. Lots of the people here come from Peter's Yahoogroup, ColombiaExperts and from Locolombia Discussion Group. Tinto is one of them.

Anybody else posting at PBH, ColombiaExperts or Locolombia before 2003 raise up a hand!

Cheers,
Desi

I've been reading PBH since 1998 - but only registed a few years ago. I was pretty much glued to it for the first year and then only sporadically visited until I registered a few years back.

I didn't have internet at home yet and used college computers to access the site.. so if there are IP logs, my accessing PBH might be traceable (assuming the college hasn't changed their IP).

I remember that PBH was more Peter's personal site to share info about his living experience, teaching experience and side trips while in Colombia.

I seem to remember a few amusing flatmate stories, photos of the house he shared with some people etc. The format of the site was also very different - more lansscape with about 4 columns of info and links. There was also a headshot of an indigenous woman on the site..

I know that Peter's info was very important to travellers/backpackers in the late 90s and early 2000s.. I recall the site being referenced in at least 2 other blogs from back then.

Early Posts I posted under a different moniker beginning around 1998 but couldn´t use it after the site was revamped and now I don´t remember what it was. I also posted some pictures of Trujillo-Valle back then but the gallery is gone.

This was my first blog too. And it is still only one of two that I participate in or even read. I found it when I Googled "fiance visa Colombia" about a year ago. I joined a month or two later. I am curious how others have found this site.

A gringo in Arizona... I met a guy who was about to get his Barranquillara here within a few more months with the visa; met him strictly by chance, by reading his post on some 'travel advisor' webpage. 4 or 5 months later, and into my relation with my Pastusa, he kept telling me that I should check out PoorButHappy. (While he was departing...pbh.)

I know quite a few people,...who use to come to this site, but tired of the non-sense long ago. Alot of people still read, but don't write.

Ciao! Gustav. Bienvenitos, Ike.

Toilets I was member of the Colombia Experts group when I was in Colombia teaching English from 2000-2001. I seem to remember that Peter had a rather amusing article about south american toilets, and taking the last train from Medellin to Barrancabermeja. Have you archived this at all anywhere Peter?

To be honest, I prefer the site as it was before. It doesn't really have a structure now, topics are repeated over again when someone comes up with a question that's been asked many times before. Still, it's a **hard** task to design an interactive forum of this nature which is well structured in the sense that it's easy to find information about a particular topic. The google toolbar doesn't do it for me, somehow.

The other issue is that I find 90% of the conversations on this site rather dull. So I don't really visit that often anymore.
