Pasto: hiking Galeras

Has anyone done this? Is it safe at the moment? What are the logistics- getting there, costs, etc.? Is special equipment/ clothing necessary?

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. What other things are there to do in/around Pasto?

In 1990 I went half way to the galeras in a renault 4 i stayed in the car and my husband and brother went up to the top, he said it was quite smoky and dangerous asthey were some mines near the equipment that are there monitoring the volcano, they had to do that cuz people were stealing the equipment.

I know another friend who did the same trip in 1992 and he went all the way to the top too.
i don't know how is the situation now.
