Passing the time

To all you bold gringos who are have retired to Colombia, a question...

With all that time and opportunity on your hands, how do you manage to avoid spending your days chasing women and drinking rum? Assuming that some of you DO manage to sidestep this...er...terrible fate, what sort of things fill up those empty hours? Fishing, watching TV, posting on PBH?

Time goes faster now than it ever did. By the time I wake up and clean the apt, desayunos, pbh, Body-Tech, spanish lessons, I find it is 2:40 in the afternoon, like it is now. Now its time to email, PBH, take a nap.

Yesterday, I spent the day with donGringo and my chica.

I have a dinner date almost every night.

I'll tell you that Kalder, I've spent many an hour in Colombia this year with nothing pressing needing to be done... although I am far from an old retired bum, but perhaps was acting like one in Colombia.

In Medellin there are many things to do, I would love to take strolls with the dog up to Pueblito Paisa, the hill is in a nice area, 2 minutes from where I lived. I would watch TV, go on trips to the townships nearby (Envigado, Sabanetta, etc...) and then occcasionaly road trip to Santa Fe de Antioquia and pueblos out there. You get to meet people too, it's always entertaining passing the hours talking away! Go to the Unicentro (mall) and meet all types of people getting on with their normal lives, get into arguments, gosando la vida in general, so to speak. Going out to eat as well, cheaply, is great, you never know what's coming

To be honest, when you're with someone special, you fill the time in every way imaginable!

The time passes quick there. I went for 2 months. All my friends in New
York could'nt understand how I could stay in Colombia for 2 months. By the time I wake up shower and brush my teeth, its 12 noon. Then I go out drinking and carousing until the a.m.

In Cali the pasties are known to spend all their time hanging out at Chippy Chappy Mall drooling at shopgirls and waitresses. The cleaning personell are constantly mopping the floors to keep them from being slippery of gringo drool. Watch your step.

Oh, sorry, that would be "drinking and chasing women" I guess, even if there isn't much actual chasing happening.

Cheers,
Desi

All that time? I've got a 17 month old daughter, 10 yr old stepson, 5 yr old step niece and enjoy spending several hours a day with them. Mornings is always Discoverykids in Spanish. Helps dad learn Spanish too. After that, it's bathe the baby time and breakfast for all. I do 95% of the cooking. Then some work in the house (yes I help) and lunch.
Afternoons is maby a short mororcycle ride (if no rain) into the country or local mountains. Late afternoon and evenings is with the kids. Add to that some computer time and the day is well used up.

The daily rum and ber has been hard to give up. But worth the trade off. Now chasing the women? I'm beginning to weaken a whole lot.

Other times we pack up and go to one of the local fishing holes that also have a pool(s), food, cook your catch...., or a few hours on a Sunday afternoon at the park by the river. On sundays there's rides, food, goodies......... or?

I wish I had the time to hang out at malls ogling shopgirls...

Come to think of it, I do have 5 weeks of vacation time coming up. What mall would be best for that in Bogotá? Andino? Atlantis? Santa Fe?

Bogotá is not a good place (my pasty friends tell me). The rolas don't wiggle as much when they walk and wear two piece suits with a blouse buttoned up all the way to their ears.

The ultimate drool palace for pasty tastes: The Chippy Chappy Mall in Cali. Don't be a cheapo, Leroy . Buy a ticket to the Sultana del Valle.

My frineds tell me cornish pasties are sometimes called Hoggans or oggies, so maybe they do ogle shopgirls. Kernow is Cornish (or so I believe) and might be able to say.

I find well dressed women are often sexier than barely dressed women.

It is good to see gringos doing their part to keep the cleaning staff at Chipechape gainfully employed. ;)

I tried to make a Cornish pasty once, using Kernow's recipe. It turned out quite tasty if not pretty.

You're Canadian, Tequila. And you're not that much over the hill yet. That explains that you still have some taste regarding women. Good for you!

Desi

LOL Tequila. In Canada or USA or Sweden you're just a baby. In Colombia you're closing on the hill (my estimate: 35 for women 45 for guys). I always thought that you were in your forties...perhaps because you sound so mature.

The best bit of ogling I ever did was in the "Cafe del Mar" in Cartagena. The girls (waitresses) there all had perfect figures, walked with so much wiggle I'm still not sure how they maintained their balance, and stored the pens that they wrote their orders on wedged between their breasts.

Good times.
