Parque Tayrona, Santa Marta, and Taganga Trip
Last weekend we went to parque Tayrona, Santa Marta, and Taganga. Here there are a few pics.
We got bus tickets in advace each at $45.000 /person from Bucaramanga. Arriving at the Santa Marta terminal about 7:30 AM w headed to the park entrace via Wayuu buses (the company). We had to take a cab from the terminal to the Mamatoco gas station ($about 3000). The bus fare was $5000 each.
The ride to the park is about 40 mins. Foreigners pay $25.000 and nationals just $9000.
After paying and listening to the park employees about food, trash, fishing, we took the first pic of the trip:

The park`s map.
From the entrance to the Cañaveral split is a 45 min walk. Luckily another couple was comming in and we just asked them for a ride. Then we started walking towards arrecifes. I had never seen so many crabs in my life. Moreover, I had never seen so many BLUE crabs in my life !

You can rent a horse for $25.000 one way at that point to take you to Cabo San Juan. The walk is about 1 hour. We ran into some indians along the trail.
PIC????
We settled in Bukaros camp site. $8.000 per hammock. Just 20 meters from the beach

Our hotel
here are cabins in arrecifes. They go for about $300.000 night for 4 people. A little expensive I think. However, they have solar panels for your energy necessities...

Or you can stay in hammocks with mosquito nets and a locker for your belongings for $16.500. We didn`t see these until the end:

From there, it is a 30 min walk to Cabo San Juan. On the way you cross “La Piscina:

We ran into locals who had just caught this fish:

30 lbs Sierra. Fishing is prohibited inside the park, they said it got tangled in a bouy...
Cabo San Juan is a beach where there is another camping site. This place probably had more tents than hammocks.

It is also the entrance to “El Pueblito, an ancient indian village. The walk is about 2 hours up and 1:30 down. It`s a stone-man-made trail.

There are parts that are not suitable for kids, pregnat women, people with heart conditions or just wimps...The scenery is just beautifull. Luckily for us that day wasn`t too sunny

Blue tail lizzard. There are thousands around

Millipedi

Butterfly...
The undertoe at Tayrona is so strong that locals advise not to get in the water. There are places, like La Piscina or Cabo San Juan where you can get in the water, but they advise you to be careful. While we were there I heard that 2 Americans almost drawned b/c there were swimming on this beach.

Arrecifes beach
They struggled for about hour and the locals told everyone NOT TO JUMP on the water to save them. They finally got washed up on some rocks. No harm. There are park signs that advise you not to swimm, More than 200 people have died there. I can`t find a pic of that sign. Sorry.
On Saturday we woke up to watch the sunrise and sing happybirhday to the missus.

Birthday Sunrising
On the way back we walked by Cañaveral (about 20 mins form the detour) to see the ecohabs and the other camping site (I had camped there in ´94) but it was completely empty.
The cabins are nice, they overlook the beach and there is a spa around. I believe the price is around $500.000. According to the NY Times travel guide Shakira stayed there a few months ago.

The park is pretty nice. Food is a little expensive but remember that EVERYTHING has to be brought in. Bottles of water go for $2.000, beer $3000, fresh juices $3000 too but a coconut shrimp rice (enought for 1 ½ ppl) only for $18,000.
Be sure you take plenty of mosquito repelent !
On the way back we caught an old nissan jeep to get to the main hwy for $2000 and then the bus to El Mercado in Santa Marta for $5000.
The story continues with Taganga and Santa Marta.
