PARENTS OF GRINGO BOYFRIEND THINK HE'LL BE FOUND DEAD ON A DITCH IF HE TRAVELS TO COLOMBIA

Me and my gringo boyfriend are planing to visit Colombia at the end of february. We'll spend 4 days in Bogota and stay at a friends house in a very nice and exclusive neighborhood. Then we are going to Medellin for 10 days and will spend most of our time between el barrio Boston, Laureles and el Poblado.
His father is having nightmares and is getting sick over the thought of his fully grown, 28 year old son, traveling to the most dangerous country in the world, a country where 5 people is kidnaped per day, a country more dangerous than Iraq, a country where kidnappers hung around airports waiting for prey. AH????? They feel positive that if he goes to Colombia he's never coming back to the USA because he will be DEAD!!!!!

Now, I want the testimony of some of you gringos, foreigners, who have visited Colombia and can say something positive to my boyfriend who, I know, is also very afraid of going there. But I told him he needed to put on his "pantalones" and just go! We have a very serious relationship and he must meet my family, friends and culture. Those are very important things to me. Plus if we get married and have children I WILL take my children to visit Colombia as long as the situation continues to be good. I feel bad sometimes because I'm kind of forcing him to go, but God, I'm positive that once he is there he's gonna love it. He'll fall in love with all that food that he already adores, the shopping, the glances he'll be able to take at the hot girls =), the friendliness, the beauty of nature, etc, etc.

Please guys, I'm new here and would love some feedback from a few of you who have been visiting Colombia so I can show my boyfriend. That may give him some piece o mind. But about his parents... I don't know. They are waaay out there. I don't think there is a way I can convince them that their son may be as safe in Medellin as he is in Birmingham (where they live) which has a murder rate 60% higher than our ciudad de la primavera.

And if you have any good, credible data to share with me (about the safety, murder rates, all the improvement Colombia has made in the last years), I would really appreciate it.

Thank you guys. Happy Holidays!!!

Advice to gringo boyfriend: get your affairs in order, and say goodbye to your friends and family for one last time. Veronica is dragging you to the most godforsaken, violent nightmare of a country you can possibly imagine. 1.5 MILLION tourists visited last year, god only knows how many made it out alive.

Hey, careful, man, there's a beverage here!

In my opinion no "safety stats, murder rates, and all the improvement Colombia has made in the last years" will change your father -in-law's nor your boyfriend's mind. your boyfriend has to go down there and see it with his own eyes.

I don't know what the statistics are but it's probably not too much of a stretch to say that the chances of a smart, non-drunk foreigner getting kidnapped in Colombia are no worse than a person in the U.S. getting shot and killed at church, at school or at the mall.

1. No mandatory draft at 18 years old. Sent those young bored spoiled modefouqes to boot camp to learn some fokin discipline.

2. I blame fokin Mexicans!
Why fokin Mexicans?
It used to be that kids had chores, take out the garbage, cut the three down, paint the garage, mow the lawn etc. They no longer have to do that chit.
Mexicans will do it for 20 bucks a day
Now kids have all the money and time in the world to shoot, cans, trees and squirrels with assault rifles, then after getting bored shooting at trees and squirrels people are next.

Veronica, the boys are giving your boyfriend a hard time..... Well, with good reason... lol...

Actually, you all are going to be here for 2 weeks..... and if you've seen some other post, Bogota is the #21 tourist hotspots for 2008....

Check out travelingirl's feedback on her recent trip to Bogota.... I mean, she barely survived to tell her tale, but she did survive... =)

Bottomline is.... yes, there are always dangers when you travel.... Normal precautions should be made, BUT, chances are he'd be much safer then in Birmingham...

As for the parents, just freak them out even more.... Have your boyfriend make up a will, and a letter of instructions of what his parents should do in the event of a kidnapping... Well, they're in Birmingham, what else could be expected.... Maybe, if you told them that you both would be wearing bullet proof vests, that would be great....

Also, make sure they don't see "La Sierra" between now and the time you both leave....

reminds me of my drug-addled youth. Once I told my mom I was going skiing, two hours from my home in NC.

I really went to Florida.

I came back with a bushel of oranges for her/her neighbors (leaves still attached- I picked 'em myself).

Her response? "so- how was the skiing?"

GIB, I think you are spot on about the Mexicans. When I was growing up - and you are not too much older than me, I hustled to make a dollar. I mowed lawns, shoveled snow off driveways, collected aluminum cans (I even had an exclusive contract with the Holiday Inn to be able to get into their dumpsters), washed cars, etc. I worked DAMN hard for hardly anything. But now, other people do that from south of the border and US kids play XBox and get fat. They think hard work is waking up in the morning. When and if I have kids - I pray they have a work ethic like we were used to.

The first motorized vehicle I ever bought was a Snapper riding lawn mower. I worked my ass off pushing a mower, to be able to buy that thing. But it was a money maker for me. ;)

Those days are long gone, sadly. BUT- my sons earn their spending cash keeping my boat clean and shiny. They don;t have much choice ;) - but they do get paid. My 14-year old is turning into a pretty good hand with a varnish brush these days....jajajajja

Well.... I can't say I pushed very many lawnmowers.... But, I too did the whole babysitting for extra cash.... Work demonstration booths.... prior to 15... there used to be a city program, don't know if it's still around, where you actually work at government facilities during your teens.... I did that during my summers after I turned 15.. worked at Social Services, The Gas Company and a school... It was a great insight to a real work environment... But, I also did a lot of hours of volunteer work at Children's Hospital....

Robert Jorge says on Dec 12, 2007, 20:49:

slguy, there is nothing wrong with paying your own kids for chores. (Not that you thought there was) My parents paid me $10 to mow the lawn every week. That was almost an acre with a push mower, no such thing as self propelled. I also mowed a few neighbor's lawns on a regular basis too. For me, it was pretty good money. I also have permanent hearing damage because I listened to Iron Maiden at full volume with a Sony Walkman while mowing, to cover over the lawnmower noise. Collecting the aluminum cans was the hardest job I had. We would go to the Holiday Inn at 5am. We would have to seperate the cans from all the rest of the trash. We would net about 50 pounds of cans per day. We made .25 a pound. That is F-ing hard work for what we made. But I wouldn't change a thing. I know the value of a dollar.
