Paranoia is not an excuse

Cats are being killed in different cities of Colombia, just because one cat´s bite with rabbies killed one kid in Santander de Quilichao, it does not mean that all street cats need to be sacrified, and home cats need to be abandone.

Interesting post, Web, I was thinking about this the other day. I have not seen a single cat in Cartagena in the five months I have lived here - and they are not available at the pet store... strange...?

The bottom line is that most Colombians hates Cats and love Dogs. They can tell you a million reasons why Cats are dirty and disease ridden but Dogs are the cleanest animal to have ever lived.

Oh and it's perfectly fine for their dogs to shit anywhere they please. Usually in front of their own house or apartment!

ColombianoGringo says on Apr 8, 2008, 08:53:

I personally didn't like having a cat as a pet, but certainly wouldn't advocate violence towards them or any other innocent animal. I think the misconception that many Colombians have is that cats are generally filthy, diseased animals. I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to some sort of program to humanely euthanize strays where there is an overpopulation problem, but beating them to death and poisoning them is just savage. Sadly, the concept of animal rights doesn't carry much weight with many Colombians and Latin Americans in general.

Lauthra says on Apr 8, 2008, 08:59:

Yes ColombianoGringo, and that it's truly sad that the government doesn't help in that respect, but then what can you expect of a government that doesn't even take care of it's people like it should? Let alone animal.

ColombianoGringo says on Apr 8, 2008, 09:20:

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind beating to death a few dog owners that "walk" their dogs to take a dump in other people's lawns. I love dogs, but my yard is not the toilet for everyone else's mutt, especially when mine are trained to go in a corner of the backyard.

Mononoke28 says on Apr 8, 2008, 09:31:

I love animals including cats but it is true that Colombians don't have a lot of respect for cats. A lot of them don't even know what a litter box is and think cats are agressive and not worth having as pets. They also don't have very good vets either. My husband's family cat was very old and sick and the only vet they could find was one who only knew about cattle and pigs. He also didn't give a rat's ass about the poor thing. That just blew me off.

cali373 says on Apr 8, 2008, 10:03:

I have a different opinion. Most Colombians I have met have much sympathy for animals in general. Maybe they dont use a litter box, but one is not really needed. it is just good marketing that cause people (mostly in the U.S.) that certain things that we really dont need are needed.

grant it, it is true that since Colombians are very superstitious (ignorantly), cats are not revered very much.

Smile if you are a thinker!

Lauthra says on Apr 8, 2008, 11:46:

A litter tray not really needed? So where do you reckon indoor cats should go then? Maybe outdoor cats don't need it but indoor cats?

Nato (='.'=)

Mononoke28 says on Apr 8, 2008, 11:56:

A lot of people use regular sand or "tierra para plantas".

curramberochris says on Apr 8, 2008, 12:41:

Ironically there are many more stray dogs here than cats. Big packs of them run around everywhere!
Much more of a danger than a few cats!

Lauthra says on Apr 8, 2008, 14:32:

Yes, I didn't mean the cat litter itself, I meant the litter box, litter tray, the area where they go.

Let 'em kill all the cats they want. Then when the cities suddenly get overrun with rabid rats, what are they gonna do...have their precious dogs control the rat population? Idiots.

ColombianoGringo says on Apr 8, 2008, 19:33:

Well true, but outside of that, cats are pretty much useless ;-)

Rabies is a pretty serious subject and some places have gone to extreme lengths to rid themselves of it, but that's a very funny line! Made me howl!

I've had some great dogs and some great cats. I've still never heard a dog purr :)

I spoke with a friend of mine today at work about how Australia is short many occupations and easier to get a visa now. She told me she had a friend in the 80s who anchored a boat off of the Aussie coast and somehow some asshole got aboard when she was away and killed her poor kitty. Guess they don't like the kitties down there either.

One thing about the Arab countries and Spain I believe is that they respect the cat and keep em around. Saw so many feral cats in Bahrain and Spain. Latin Am. so different in this regard.

All are creatures of God and every attempt be made to keep em around.

Just capture and fix em them let em go. So simple.

Colombians don't normally kill cats. I've seen dog catchers but never a cat catcher.

Bad luck.

HAHAHAH OMG Ray just said "polla a la plancha" .... are you perhaps referring to cat sweetbreads? :)

Most Colombians I know absolutely ABHOR cats, including my SO. She won't even be in the same room with one. Me, I kinda like cats and dogs. I like em best medium rare :)

I'm still trying to think why it is the duty of any government to "take care of" people OR animals. Anybody from any government agency that tries to "take care of" me is going to have to kill me or BE killed! :P
