Paraguay 5 Colombia 0 Colombia is horrible

Sure Paraguay is a good team. Afterall, they were the team back in 05 that nailed the doors shut on Colombia's bid for a chance at the World Cup. But, let's face it, anyone who has an ounce of knowledge about this game can readily recognize that Colombia looked pitifull.....as bad as she ever looked.

In short
The defense could not work in concert or efficiently. They looked so disorganized, almost like they were just playing each other for the first time. They could not coordinate their efforts at all. Par was able to work their way from side to side, front to back, easily air passes through a wind tunnel. Defender Cordoba, should be benched instanter. The fact that the injury prone Santa Cruz was able to wisk by him so easily demonstrated how ineffectual he is.

Oh yea.....about the offense. Was there any? It was comical.
Was Dominguez paid off? Did he drink too much? It is common knowledge that for the most part, you have to try blow a Penalty Kick (PK). At the championship level, the failure to score is inexcusable. But Dominguez's approach had no indication of deception.....the only way you can throw the Goalkeeper off and score. Not only did he lack deceptive maneuvering, the kick itself was week, and did not pose any challenge to Villar, Paraguay's Goalkeeper.

And the rest of the defense? It was as bad as their defense......actually worse. Why? There were moments went is seemed that Colombia was able to break something open and slide one through. The result? A kick that went far off the mark.

OK. This is just one game. However, this is a short series. They cannot afford to lose again. They are already in a trouble because of the giving up of 5 goals. So even if they can work a tie to advance in this series, Colombia's giving up of 5 goals, and scoring none make it nearly impossible for them to move forward.

One more thing. After Mexico's impressive victory over Brasil, is there really somebody who honestly think that Colombia is better than Mexico.....? Sure they are.....yea sure. Ha ha. Any more jokes for today?

OK....Andresmo, I get your point. However, I have two responses.

The 2 - 2 1/2 year elimination (qualifying) cylce for the top 4 COMNEBOL teams to go to the WC has not begun yet. Thank God for that. That means there is plenty of time for Colombia to examine what it has, and decide where they need to go. Guys like Cordoba, and Dominguez should be replaced even before they find someone suitable to replace them. That being said, there is plenty of time to reubuild, move forward, and make adjustments as need in the elmination cyle. As to Pinto.....He was responsible for the building of the Costa Rican National team in th 2004-5 period. To this day, Costa Rica is considered one of the best teams in CONCACAF. Pinto has not been around long enough to tell whether he will be effectual or not. However, after last night's performance, I would say he does not have much time

What a horrible game!

First of all, why did they have some no-name schmuck like Dominguez take that penalty kick?! He kicked that ball as if he were passing it to his son! That shot was for Rodallega or Edixon Perea! And where did this idiot Dominguez come from? HE SUCKS!!

Second, why the hell was Luis Amaranto Perea, who plays for Atletico Madrid, on the bench? And Miguel Calero should not be on the national team, it obvious his skills have diminished, but that's what happens when you play in a mediocre league like Mexico's! Why the hell is he even on the team? Ivan Ramiro Cordoba played the worst game he's ever played. He should be benched! Why didn't Coach Pinto call up those two tower defenders from Cucuta's team? At least they're playing well!

I also believe that both Rodallega and Edixon Perea are not even starters on their club teams! So why the hell are they called up to the national team? We need people who are going through a good moment on the team, not benchwarmers as starters!

And the midfield, what a mess....shit, bring back El Pibe!

HERE'S SIMON!!!!

Gomezman5 says on Jun 29, 2007, 11:20:

Cordoba....
He is 30, and yes he is on the shorter side, but he has good agility and that agility can compensate for a lack of height...... The ability to be able to keep pace and take out forwards does not necessarily require height. You certainly don't need height in the mid fielder / forward positions......just ask a guy named Landon Donovan with the US team....a guy who is also only 5' 8" put is as deadly as the best of em.

But Cordoba, at 30, seems washed up for the purpose of being on the National team.

Colombia has a big problem. They are too nostalgic. They cannot seem to let go of guys when it's time to do so.Even as far back as Asperilla and Valderrama, you had two guys that played not in one World Cup too many.....but TWO too many. One of the reasons that Mexico and the US are doing so well, is that they are not afraid to make change. When the US fired Bruce Arena, I was not happy with that move. But Bradley seems to know how to make needed changes. Hugo Sanchez Mexico's coach is very aggressive when he sees a weak spot. Fonseca played poorly in the Gold Cup, hence he has been replaced in the Copa de America by an aspiring young and ambitious. He thought Oswaldo Sanchez was a bit "off" in goal here in Chicago, so he stated Ochoa. As it turned out, Ochoa looked phenominal. And.....he is only 22 years old.....Check him out in this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLTA1LxlA-Q

Lastly, as to Colombia being better than Mexico......I'll only say, ........
Keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel good.

Simon says on Jun 29, 2007, 11:51:

30 is not old dude, so that's not an excuse. But Cordoba did look burned out last night. He needs to get with it.

And I've got a better example than Donovan about height not being necessary for mid fielder / forward positions... a 5' 5'' guy named Maradona, perhaps the greatest footballer ever.

I disagree with you about Valderrama and Asprilla playing in two world cups too many. They were at their peak coming into the 1994 Cup, even though they played badly. Asprilla only played in two World Cups, 1994 and 1998. VAlderrama did play in three, 1990, 1994, and 1998.

I don't need to tell myself that Gomez, all I have to do is look at the result of the last time they played, in a GoldCup, and in your town, nonetheless.....Colombia 2 Mexico 1!! And in Copa America confrontations, Colombia has the winning record over the overrated Mexicans, 2-1, ha ha ha!

From an unbiased viewpoint:

Colombia played some of the most tactically inept football I have ever seen them play. They couldn't break down the midfield (but neither could paraguay, who early on seemed to result to long-ball play) and were uncreative and failing to mark when they attacked.

Defensively Colombia were just lazy. It's almost as if they couldn't be bothered to defend, which is beyond inept (Paraguay's first goal, for instance).

I read somewhere along here that Colombia are too nostalgic. That very well could be the case, because with a couple of minor exceptions, what I noticed was a bunch of uninspired footballers who would be beaten by league 1 teams in England (no offence to league 1 jeje)

No Quite. However, when it comes to soccer, perhaps I am in spirit. But, Colombian I am and I never afraid to admit as such.

When I wrote that line, I paused, thinking that someone would take it that way. But I really don't care because if someone misunderstands the context of the word "We're" as it is being used. I love the Mexican soccer team. I am in their environment every day of my life. I go to the bars and parties, where the game is always on, .......and on huge big screen TV's no less. Chicago is the second most populated city with Mexicans. They, and their soccer are everywhere. Also, every weekend, I watch the teams from the Mexican league here. Colombian league soccer??? Is there one?? (I know there is) Not in Chicago. The closest thing that I have to Colombian soccer in Chicago is the some Caleno's jersey from a team he played for 20 years ago that is pinned up on the wall of the Colombian bakery (the only one) that he owns.

Colombian soccer??? What's that? Where is it? It certainly is not here in Chicago. There is only one place....ONE, that once in a while, when there is a big game, they will have it on their TV. The drinks are expensive, the food is terrible. The last time I went there I ordered arroz con pollo. The rice had no taste, and I had to use a magnifying glass to find the cheapest piece of meat there is....chicken.

I guess the best comparison is the situation with all my friends in Springfield, Illinois. They live in Illinois, the state's capitol, and yet, easily more than half of the baseball fans are St. Louis Cardinal fans.......a Missouri team. I ask them why, and they all give the same answer. Missouri is closer.....much closer to Springfield than Chicago is. You can drive to St. Louis in a little over an hour. Chicago is about 3 and a half hours from Springfield.

So there is your answer. Trust me, if I was Mexican, I would have about as much interest in a forum on Colombia as a monkey would with a string of pearls.

Monpirri
You're right. They are about security. Something Colombia is sadly lacking. I can't think of any country off hand in the civilized world, where a group to insurgents can march into the main muicipal building where legislators hold office, in the third largest city, and pull off the kidnapping of 11 or 12 people, haul them off to some distant unknown place, and hold them for 4 years, only for them then to show up dead. So there you have it. That's the Colombia I know. I'll say another thing Monpirri. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on what the significance of a situation is, but nobody is entitle to their own facts. That long sentence of facts that I set forth above IS reality, and that is the way it is. If you and a bunch of others want to deny their significance, then you are certainly free to do so. But, I don't think you will find many (any) logical thinking person that would interpret the situation any differently, with the exception of course the my fellow countrymen who stand in denial, and the Gringos who also have some personal bias because they are either married, were married or are about to be married to some Colombian.

In any eventm back to the main subject at hand. Soccer/futbbol......if you think Colombia's futbol team arrises to any level more than mediocrity, then your knowledge of this game is about knowledgable as your knowledge as Colombia's security situation. And, may I add, if you don't think that the team sucks.....and sucks big time, then they have no chance (zero) of making it to the World Cup in 2010. What's worse, you will have to watch them make fools of thmeselves during the 2 and half years of eliminations, while the likes of Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia, and......based on what I have seen of Venezuela of late......include them on the list, ......walk all over Colombia. They were a disgrace the other night. They could not put anything together. It's one thing to blow a PK, something rarely done, but to dribble a ball off the way Dominguez did, was something I had never seen done so poorly.

I think ManINred put it succinctly:
"And the penalty struck was one of the weakest most feeble efforts I have ever seen, and thats a lot, coming from an englishman!"

Gomezman5 says on Jun 30, 2007, 13:09:

Simon, you are very right. I am very glad my parents got the hell out of Colombia. They left for the same reason every Colombian wants OUT. It's called opportunity. The ONLY gringos that run to Colombia, are those that are living on American dollars, something that even if the worst of exchange rates, go a longer way in Colombia than they do anywhere in the US. So keep in mind, they are not in Colombia because they love Colombia, Before they moved there, theyf first made the decision they wanted to leave the US. Then they made the decision which country that they wanted to go to. I might point out that there are many more Gringos living in Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama then there are in Colombia. Why? Same reason. It's cheaper. You have one of our more popular members on PBH, who, by his own admission, is living in Colombia because that disability check from Social Security to the tune of 850 a month, all by itself, enables him to live much much much better than the average Colombian can. Can a Colombian get a GOVERNMNET (not pension) check from Colombia to live in the US? Enough said. I love it when I come back with these "slam dunk" responses that while they don't render you and Monpirri "speachless" they do make it difficult for you to come up with a response that is both logical and responsive.

Back to soccer (can we stay there?) I already wrote I know there is a Colombia soccer league. I suggest you reread my post above (BTW can't accuse me of editing it). I simply said that here in Chicago, Mexico and Mexican culture is a bigger part of my life than Colombia is. I could not have been more graphic or given a better and by the way, understandable explanation for my attachment to Mexican soccer than I already did above. You cannot love what you don't know. Making me Colombian, does not mean I have to be attached to Colombian soccer. Yes I want them to win, but look man, I like watching the game and going to the games. I can do that here in Chicago all the time. The same is not true of Colombian soccer. It just does not exist here. It's just like my friend from England. He also like Mexican soccer and he is from the UK. Soccer in the UK is better, more organized and better talent than here in the US. It has the attraction of baseball, football, and basketbll together, however, he watches Mexican soccer because that is what is here.

Maybe if I had come here as asn adult, I would think differently. But as they say, when in Rome, you do as the Romans.......So, while not in Rome, I am in a Mexico North of the border. And trust me man, if that amnesty bill ever passes, you better start learning to love everything Mexican, because they are going to be such a dominant political force, when people think of Latin culture, Mexican culture is the only thing that is going to come to mind. Even the cubans of South Florida will become voiceless. The Mexican will run them out of their enclaves in the same way that the Mexicans have invaded the Puerto Rican enclaves here in Chicago and elsewhere............

As to the Cucta / Toluca example.......so what? That has nothing to do with the central issue and that is which national team is better. So if you think Colombia is better than Mexico, then what you are really saying is that they do not have much room for improovment. And like I said above, get ready for a long and painfull couple of years seeing Colombia's ass get kicked all over South America when they make a rather feeble attempt to pursue a WC position. Absent any drastic changes, they will be doomed before they even begin.

Lastly, who wants to cheer a bunch of losers? Call me a fair weather fan if you want. But if Colombia does not care enough about fielding quality players that can be competitive, I have no reason to feel they have earned my support for them. I said the same things about the Cubs, who play 3 blocks from my house. If 40,000 fans want to pack Wrigley Field to see the Cubs play poorly because management does not want to spend the money to get the team relief pitching, they can do so. I will not. I'll watch the game for free on TV in the comfort of my home, where the beer is 1/7 of the cost, and replays/commentary make the game more interesting.

When I said every Colombian, I meant those that are looking to "better themselves" from a financial perspective. I overspoke. I just get so caught up in these debates, I just go flying off sometimes.

OK, above said, honestly, I don't hate Colombia or it's culture. Why would I want to hate my people and the culture from where I came. I will stand my ground on the security situation, albeit it has obviously gotten better under Uribe. Kudos to him. But the soccer team my man......come on. I stuck that avatar up there just to piss you off. It was a double hit because monpirri dropped in too. You guys should know me by now....(even if you don't know me). I did ask that we keep politics did and we kept to it. I did not intend for this thread to get political or last very long. I just wanted this to be a quick commentary on the Colombian National team.

BTW, come on, I don't consider the Mexican culture a "sub culture". In fact, if they fools get their way and pass an amnesty bill, they will end up being the majority culture 20 years from now.......nowhere near a subculture. I sure don't want amnesty.
