panama

I need help. My family wants to move to Panama. We have an 8 year old son so we have to find good schools, jobs ( I'm a teacher, my husband is an actor) and a home. We're looking for a simpler way of life and for natural beauty. Where do we start? Maribeth

hola maribeth You could start by calling Jimmy Bassan, a real estate broker in Panama City at 507-265-3030 as he can walk you through the types of housing in the market for sale. He specializes in apartments (condos) and has many listings at attractive prices. You will find the prices are about the same as Colombia for equal quality houses or apartments. http://www.habitatsrealty.com/

You will find a lot of Colombian people residing in Panama City and more coming every day in pursuit of a higher standard of living. If you are bilingual you should have no problem finding a job. You will leave the natural beauty behind in Colombia when you leave but you will find more economic opportunities and a better standard of living in Panama City. You can usually find a way to obtain a resident VISA in Panama very easy and citizenship and a Panamanian passport comes in 5 years.

Are you completely fluent in english as that will be a help in Panama to find a better paying job as english is more widely spoken in Panama City than in Colombia.

Hey viewpoint You sure know how to reccomend the best of the best. I went to the above web site and the very cheapest condo (they only had 4) shown was for $100,000. They even had one for $630,000. Viewpoint, most people here don't have that kind of money...how many people do you think in Panama have that kind of money????

They have exclusive listings on several new residential buildings with smaller apartments that start in the $60,000 range and higher. Regarding your question about how many people in Panama have $100,000 to $630,000 to spend on buying an apartment ? You have to be kidding or you have never been to Panama City. Plently of Colombians have made the trip and bought many apartments in that price range. Costa del Este (just about 5 miles south of Panama City towards the airport) has homes ranging from $250,000 to $1,250,000 and they are all sold so somebody has money in Panama City. Three high rise condominiums are under construction in that same project and two of the builders are Colombian construction companies that I know and the third building is being build for one extended family who will own and occupy that building completely.

There are over 50 high rise residential buildings currently under construction in Panama City with prices ranging from $40,000 to $1,000,000 (or more for large penhouse units) so someone must have the money in Panama or there wouldn't be more than a 100 banks there.

Here's a project that's totally sold out (just being finshed) and the cheapest unit was $300,000 ranging up to $1,000,000 for the penhouse.

viewpoint you misunderstood my point of VIEW!! I have been to Panama many times. And, I am perectly aware of the degree of wealth of Panama. For all intense and purposes, it is the economic engine of Latin America. the canal, and the country's strategic location are primarily responsible for it's wealth. population wise, and geographicaly, it is relatively small. The port city of Colon is one of it's main economic engines outside of Panama City. Additionally, a majority of multinationals, that have any business in Latin America have chosen Panama as their corporate headquarters. Sony of Panama is the one that comes to my head immediately. If you by a sony product in Mexico, right over the US border, it is distributed by Sony of Panama not Sony USA

Lastly, I am Jewish and I know that there is a huge population of Jews (wealthier than me) living there. A lot wealthier than me. They also tend to have condo's in Miami Beach.

Ok, so now you know that I am very faimiliar with Panama and it's postion on the world stage. I have been there several times and it is one of the most miserable hot and humid cities in the Universe. The humidity at night is as high as any place I have been.

MY POINT was however, that someone came on this web site looking for housing in Panama. You reffered them to a real estate web site in Panama. When I went to this site, and looked under residential listings, there were only three or 4 with the cheapest one starting at 100,000 rising to 600,000. Something tells me that someone coming here looking for housing in Panama is not looking to spend that much money. If I has a quarter of a million dollars to spend in Panama, I would have the common sense to know that Panama is a big city, I would go to Google, and search for real estate agents in Panama I would not come to a site like this....Or no?? I know Panama well. It even looks and feels like Miami. But inasmuch as there is all this expensive real estate out there, there is a heck of a lot in the 40-60,000 range and I think that is what this person was probably looking for.

Now do you you get my point friend??????

maribeth My wife es una caleña and she loves panama, I'm a panamanian and I love colombia go figure. Panama offers many opportunities if you're educated especially in the banking sector and in the bilingual field.

For me the best way to live in panama is, if you can have a source of income from a business or some investments, even better if is income from outside the country because is not taxed. Thats what my wife and I are working on as we speak, relocating to Panama. Wages in panama are not the best like most latin countries, but is not impossible to find a job.

My wife and I just bought some land that we're going to built on next year. Beatiful property about an hour from Panama city, low humidity, low crime, good prices; http://www.escapeartist.com/Altos_Del_Maria/Mountain_Garden.html
My wife absolutly loves it, views of the pacific and the atlantic.

Best thing for me is that panama is only about a 45minute flight from cali, and her family can come and go without much hassle.

Gomezman5 Well since you are Jewish I know you will like Jimmy Basson (the real estate agent in Panama) as he is Panamanian Jewish (two generations in Panama). I can tell by your post that you know the story in Panama. Yes the Jewish people own many of the "free trade zone" businesses and old time Panama companies. The jewish are the brains, the wealth and the control (in large part) behind that economy. Hell, they almost own most of the apartments in Punta Paitilla. I found Jimmy through the internet from his site and he's been very helpful to me in Panama. During my trip last week I met a couple that own a lighting store in Panama City that relocated from Bogota and they were Jewish.

I get your point my friend !!! To me Panama feels more like San Juan, Puerto Rico than Miami.

Viewpoint Sometimes I say to myself, I'm so sick of my stupid work here, I am going to pack it in and move to Panama and open one of those erotic message places and then I can kick back, relax, and count the money that all those beautiful Colombian girls will make for me everyday.

You think I am joking?? I am in part....in part. Hey, here in the US, I have my great Major med. policy to cover all my medical headaches (I have plenty) and my medicines, so if I move there, I'll be up a creek unless my girls earn me a lot of money.

Ok, I better quit before the censors accuse me of exploiting women and then send me to oblvion. It's just that the message place sounds better than a lighting store, or store that sells luggage, and imitation brand clothing.

Gomezman5 Hell, don't worry about your major medical as you will soon be old enough for Medicare (by the time you retire). Two hospitals, various clinics and doctors in Panama City accept USA Medicare coverage in Panama (just register with the USA Embassy). I would sure choose Colombia for their great medical infastructure and medical plan coverage.

Viewpoint If i'm not mistaken, I think that they are build a johns hopkins hospital in punta pacifica. I don't know what type of insurance you're going to need to go there. one thing that I do know is that insurance in panama compared to the U.S. is dirt cheat even if your hospital is paitilla. Also most doctors in panama get there formal training in the U.S. or in europe.

Colombia has good medical care... But only at certain places. I have to believe that Panama has to have medical care that rivals Colombia. Panama has a lot more money over there.

And as to you assertion that I will soon be elegible for Medicare....is 19 years soon to you??? Last I heard, you had to be 65. I am only 46. Besides, I will have a good pension in about 10 years which will give me the med coverage that I have now. The kind of coverage I have now.....you cannot even buy because a person could never afford the premiums. I am in a group plan with about 40,000 people.

Gabriel The John Hopkins hospital is just about completed and getting close to opening. It's a beautiful facility and certainly very big. Have you seen the new indoor air conditioned shopping mall just a block away, the two new high rise apartment (condo) buildings being built accross the street and the new office complex adjacent to the medical building.

I asked some questions and it appears the they licensed the name "John Hopkins" from the USA based organization (like a franchise).

Multiplaza Yeh I've heard about the new mall in punta pacifica multiplaza, I've never been there. hopefully my next trip to panama, I have been to Multicentro on avenida balboa, big mall has a huge casino inside. How does multiplaza compare to multicentro? just wondering because they seem to cater to the same clientele, pretty much in the same area of the city.

When I finally relocate to panama, I want to purchase a nice boat, hopefully I can find one for a nice price. My only concern is the lack of affordable marinas, I wonder why marinas are so expensive on the pacific side?

Gabriel Multiplaza Pacifica is a (appears to be) little bigger than Multicentro. Multiplaza is a airconditioned enclosed mall the same as Multicentro. I think that the new mall is going to put a dent in the occupancy of Multicentro. It almost seems like overkill to have two malls of that size in the same close proximiatey. It oponed December 15, 2004 and has been packed with people since then. The food court is on the 3rd floor but there are no bathrooms up there and you have to return to the first floor to access them. I haven't figured that out yet. There's another huge complex of malls near Alderbrook (near the canal) that's very new and very big. Thge marina's are probably expensive on the Pacific side because they are closer to the city (and the money).jaja

For those without US$600K ...
I have rarely met a "money-is-no-object" guy in Internet conference rooms ready to buy a US$300K condo in Panama City.

For those able to afford less, http://www.my-panama-real-estate.com has a US$75,000 apartment close to Multiplaza Pacific Mall and Omar Park in a very safe building.

panareal Apply for a job at Habitats Realty and you will find the buyers for the $300,000 condos. Call Jimmy Bassan at 265-3030 and ask him if there aren't foreign buyers for these sized apartments. He receives an average of 6 inquires per day via email through his website from serious foreign buyers from all over the world with cash.

I live in an apartment building completely sold out and the cheapest apartment here is $365,000 (resale).
