vicshere says on Jun 21, 2008, 17:55: jorge I think the whole project was and is a waste of good money....its nothing but a monument to the outgoing governor....they probably could have improved the roads through Santander which would have helped the tourism more that this eye sore at the top of a naturally beautiful mountain...which will never pay for itself let alone the people who work there listo 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

adrimm says on Jun 21, 2008, 22:39: I do agree that there need to be better roads (namely paving the roads that go the small villages), but that does seem to be happening. The road to my mother's home-village is 1/2 way paved.... and it is doing wonders for the local cottage industries. Personally I think that Colombia would be better off gradually building, with whatever it takes (tunneling, trestleing), direct fast-rail connections, a la Swiss style. The existing highways are soo tortous and windy that I don't think their routes will ever meet the commercial and commuting demand that the country will be increasingly be faced with... or for that matter be truly safe for non-local drivers. With fuel costs going the way they are Colombia would be silly to invest in more roads, I don't believe there will ever be more than 50% of the population driving so clearly car-alternatives will matter alot.
