jorge I think the whole project was and is a waste of good money....its nothing but a monument to the outgoing governor....they probably could have improved the roads through Santander which would have helped the tourism more that this eye sore at the top of a naturally beautiful mountain...which will never pay for itself let alone the people who work there

I do agree that there need to be better roads (namely paving the roads that go the small villages), but that does seem to be happening. The road to my mother's home-village is 1/2 way paved.... and it is doing wonders for the local cottage industries. Personally I think that Colombia would be better off gradually building, with whatever it takes (tunneling, trestleing), direct fast-rail connections, a la Swiss style. The existing highways are soo tortous and windy that I don't think their routes will ever meet the commercial and commuting demand that the country will be increasingly be faced with... or for that matter be truly safe for non-local drivers. With fuel costs going the way they are Colombia would be silly to invest in more roads, I don't believe there will ever be more than 50% of the population driving so clearly car-alternatives will matter alot.

Parkwise Panache may not pay for itself, but if international tourism in Colombia continues to climb, and Santander continues courting it, it can become "one more reason" to go. Other businesses in the area will also benefit from people passing through. Also from what I understand the resort-hotel going adjacent to the park will be a 5 *, so they may be able to recoup some $$ there.

From what I understand (my uncle is really into "caminatas" ) there are already hiking trails in the area , so what Santander would need to do is market the "disney-fied mountain experience" **and** the "natural mountain experience" to try and grab both ends of the spectrum and everyone in between...

The only concern I have is that the park be well maintained. I remember visiting parque Jaime Duque outside of Bogota in the early 1990s and at the time, the buildings hadn't been kept well, it was pretty dreary and the effect entirely lost.
