Palacio del Cholesterol "FRITANGA" in Bogota?

Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on any fritanga type places (not necessarily expensive) where they sell morcilla, papas criollas etc. I know of a good whole in the wall place in chapinero. On cra 7 and calle 63 next to "Aqui en Bogota." It's called the Friteire or something like that.

Back when they had casetas all over the street near the Salitre park, it was all they sold (fritanga)... sure it might have been stuff that was a few days old but what the hell. The housekeepers and the watchemen did'nt mind.

El Campin One option is to go the Campin stadium on a Sunday when there's a football game (unfortunately that won't happen until next year). I don't know how good it is... but is is an extremely well-know fritangueria.

You can also take a drive up to La Calera... there's a place on the side of the road called La Mazorca (after the Patios police checkpoint). It's very good. It was inexpensive the last time I was there.

just a clarification I need......... I was speaking to a Puerto Rican girl and she told me that "morcilla" were pig guts or intestines..I don't remember exactly.

Anyway, when I was in Pereira it was amazing to see incredibly beautiful girls with not 1 single ounze of Body Fat - tearing up pig intestines DEEP FRIED AT THAT!!!....I was schoked (and disgusted)...how the hell can they eat that, chug down 3 beers and have a 22" waist?

I was not ready to deal with some local eating customs of Colombian people...I guess I'm an amateur at best - I could only handle the Ajiaco soup and arepas - I don't think I would ever bring myself to eating pig intestines deep fried...geez..have these people ever heard of Triple by-pass surgery?

-Thoughts?

Morcilla is blood sausage, not pig intestines (well, no more intestines than any other sausage). The deep fried intestines are called chunchones or something like that.

How they do it? "tearing up pig intestines DEEP FRIED AT THAT!!!....I was schoked (and disgusted)...how the hell can they eat that, chug down 3 beers and have a 22" waist?"

Bulimia? Plastic surgery? Superior genetics?

it is modern lifestyles as much as food that makes us fat. When you walk more, dance more, do more manual labor, you can get away with eating fatty foods. I believe the hormones in American beef and poultry as well as the amount of processed food is a big factor too.

My doctors have given me a list a mile long of foods I cannot eat, I was told I cannot eat kidneys, liver, brains etc. yet my uncle lived to be 96 eating these very foods, a lot of it is good genes, and of course he walked a lot more than me and worked on a farm until he was 90.

I need to get up off of my ass and excercise more, and then I can have a "Kate & Sidney" steak & kidney pie!

Modern (North American) lifestyles I agree on the processesed food thing.

I think most large-city europeans and many colombians walk more since things are so much denser, conveniently located, and streets are connected (you can get somewhere like the tienda around the corner or on the next block). Places like the Netherlands also have suich a phenomenal bike path system and Bogota has done much more towards this than a number of large North American cities. It's not intentional exercise, it's just living life. In NA I'd say that NYC is approaching this lifestyle too (walkingwise).

Cul-de-sac-sprawl-burbia is an instant recipe to make people drive places. I recently did a study on a neighbourhood in my area and for 70% of residences it was at least 2x as far to get to shopping area than it needed to be becuase the cul-de sacs and streets had no paths to provide a direct route. The only option was to walk the same way the road went and that meant going in the opposite direction for almost 1 km, then doubling back.

I think it must be the exercise they're getting, too. Everything requires more physical effort, including riding in the busses swaying this way and that way, pushing your body through crowds, tripping on high heels really fast on uneven pavements, avoiding potholes, cracks, manholes without a lid, pickpockets and street vendors plus urchins. Crossing a street can be an adventure: a short sprint avoiding charging cars, buses, taxis, motocycles, bicycles and horse-drawn carts coming at you from all directions at the same time burns a lot of calories. Plus if you are carrying packages and a purse at the same time, and wearing ten-inch spike heels. All Colombian women I know have well-muscled shins and thighs.
It's also true that most Colombians (ok caleños) have only one major meal a day: the huge lunch at 12:30 or 1 p.m. The breakfast is negligeable: cafe con leche, white bread and a glass of juice. Sometimes hot chocolate and an arepa or pandebono. Sometimes a fried egg or pericos. In the evening people just have a light snack.
But oh boy how they eat out on the streets! Grease-dripping chanchitos, mecato in all different forms and tastes, helados, maní...
I guess they burn off all that when crossing the streets and just getting from one place to another.
Cheers,
Desi

I forgot to mention............... The time that I saw girls eating like there was no tomorrow was at 3AM!!! So, it was not a lunch thing; rather a after partying n drinkin all night thing. I was going back to my hotel after a night of dancing, and there was this restaurnat specializing in FRIED PIG GUTS open all night..geez..you would be amazed at how many spectacular bodies the women eating this late at night had!

They actually LOVED this stuff, and begged me to try some! Yuk!

I wonder if I open a deep fried pig guts all niter in Miami Beach...how much business will I do? hehe - not much most likely.

I don;t kwow what it is, but every girl I asked never went to any gym...they spent their entire day in school or office.

Partied on weekends mostly. The girl I was with had a stunning six-pack abs - it was incredibly shaped - yet she hogged down 2 plates - WITH BREAD!!!!!

I dragged my jaw on teh floor the rest of the way to the hotel.

Yo answered your own question thay had been dancing all night! Dancing is one of the best forms of excecise, Elmo knows the other forms.

You would be surprised how many places sell chicharon in Miami and it has more fat than intestines for sure, but it oh so good.

I like all that stuff, tripe, morcilla mmmm! I don't eat lengua though, too chewy! I don't think I could hack it as a vegetarian, lentils give me gas.

Once we went to stay with my wife's cousins from Bogotá in the Gainsville area, they are Krishnas. Everything of course was vegetarian and heavy on the lentils. They live in a manufactured home and lucky for me the bed was right next to the window, I slept with my ass hanging out of the window all night in case anyone lit a match. It can get pretty cold in January in Florida at night I can tell you.

I was also surprised how many Krishnas in the area were from Colombia.

Processesed food that's exactly the main reason why americans are so overweight. Along with the conforts of life. I'm a fairly thin guy and i've actually lost weight, eating as much bread, morcilla, chicharon, tamales etc as i can handle.

santiBOG thanks for your tips.

Morcilla is made from intestines The pig intestines are cleaned and dried then stuffed with the blood and rice and some spices. It is absolutely delicious. I recently tried the black pudding (made with oatmeal) but it wasn't good.
