Former Marxist rebel Daniel Ortega returns to power in Nicaragua today.

Ortega gave up power peacefully to Violeta Chamorro in 1990 despite the fact that Chamorro's campaign recieved millions of dollars from the US government's "National Endownment for Democracy".

Its also sparking some Anxiety Amongst many Foreign Ex-Pats who have invested in homes there for the last 10 years or so. Now they worry the investment laws may change for retirees as Nicaragua has a real good deal going for US Retirees. Hope it stays the same for these folks. The people from Nicaragua had their day at the polls so in a fairly transparent election(as evidenced by the large amount of foreign election monitors present at the polls the day the nicaraugans voted and no shady votes were observed), they elected Ortega-their country and their choice,,,

Huh The story talks about President Bush calling Ortega to congratulate him and talk shop. Hard to see how that translates into "anxiety in Washington" except among the lunatic fringe who see commies under every rock still.

You can bet Hugo doesn't get nice calls from Bush to congratulate him.

For a commie... Mr. Ortega seems to be currently allied with at least part of the former Contra-backers and with some allegedly corrupt folks. This is hardly looking like Sandinismo Part II, at least at this point. I wouldn't make any predictions here.

I don't follow Nicaragua in detail But from what I hear, Ortega is allied with everyone who was against the Sandinistas, and is pushing for free trade with the US. Enough to make Bush happy, I guess.

The article, on the other hand, comes with an agenda. I don't know who this people from "The Standard" are, but to say that the Sandinistas provoked civil war in Nicaragua after taking power is an imbecility of astronomical proportions... too much other shit to comment on. Not even worth my ass to wipe.
