ORPHANAGE - CALI

http://www.happychildhoods.org/Santa_Maria/santamaria_index.htm

I am going to Cali for a week on 12-19 October, and might want to visit the Orphange Home in Cali.

The website seems out of date, but does anyone know anything about the orphange. How many girls are there, their age?

What does 'adoption a child' means? Take her home from Cali or sponsor her while living there???

I am in the fashion business, so I do not have problems ordering clothing from China for them, but I need some information before considering making big 'help' to them

Check out the place in person when you get to Cali, then let us know if its a scam operation or legit is my point.

I believe there is an all girls orphanage in Yumbo not too far from Cali. Many PBHers have worked and donated with this place. Some others may be able to provide you with details...if I find the link I will post it.

Regardless, if you have any luck working with any orphanage in Cali, please repost about your experience. I go to cali often and would love to get involved as well.

Looks like Gator is the one to talk to about this place......

We have supported Instituto Santa Maria,in Cali for years. They do a great job and any contribution will be appreciated. We donate school supplies and have an informal relationship with two Staples in Miami/Dade County. The managers save broken packages, etc. which would routinely be trashed. When we have visitors coming this way we contact the stores and arrange for pickup.

Sorry for the error......the orphanage you are inquiring about is the same place I was referring to in Yumbo. ;-)

We have and continue to support this place-not really in Cali proper but in Yumbo, calle 7, en la carrtera vieja a Yumbo (Cali) Km.5. . All girls, now about 80, are from six to sixteen years old. The administrator, Sister Julia(Capuchin Tertiary Sisters of the Holy Family in Colombia) is a wonderful person and every dime goes into operations with no fancy overhead. Totally legitimate, It is my wife's pet project but she breaks down in tears when we visit and then leave. You can't adopt but the sisters will direct you to a reputable agency. Also a project of the Rotary Club in Yumbo and Pembroke Pines (Hollywood) Florida -

You will find it is like visiting the kitten section at the Humane Society-YOU WANT TO ADOPT THEM ALL!!!!!!!!!.

Gator - what can we do to contribute? I am going in december and would like to become involved. Is there someone there that speaks English since my spanish is not the best? Who can we contact to arrange a visit and to drop off donations?

Thanks for your help.

Gator......Thanks for your helpful. I do not want to contribute 'big' money, but might consider sending clothing instead. At least I could do is to visit there and contribute small money for 'thank you for my visit'.

I have visited Colombia 4 times already and will be my 5th next month and I always feel I want to help them (I have wasted all my gifts and money for my ex-prometida when they should have been for these girls in Yumbo instead)

No shortage of places in Colombia where even a little bit of help wont make a dramatic impact.

Natalia .... Go there in December and get to know about their projects and of their plans. Find out what they need money for, and how much

If you want to do some fundraising, think of something interesting.

I always want to do a cycling event !!! :)
