http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080417&content_id=2540599&vk...
Orlando Cabrera takes This Week in Baseball all the way home and presents an insider's look at baseball in his native Colombia during a segment for the April 19 edition of the popular show

It airs tomorrow, 4/19 and I guess at some point they will be showing video footage on TWIB: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/video/twib/index.jsp

Thanks!

They said I couldn't play football I was too small / They say I couldn't play basketball I wasn't tall / They say I couldn't play baseball at all / And now everyday of my life I ball.

A close friend of mine manages in baseball leagues in Barranquilla and other leagues along the coast.

During Carnaval, Elmo, Miguel, and myself were fortunate to attend an exhibition game with him, hosted by Edgar Renteria and his brothers, pitting some of the Colombian talent and some of Edgar's friends vs. the Nicaraguan team. Team Colombia won. There were some characters in the game.

I've also been told that Cabrera has contirbuted significantly to Cartagena, improving several baseball fields in a few underserved areas there, amongst many of his other contributions there.

Does Jolberta Cabrera not play anymore?

are Yamid Haad and Emiliano Fruto not not considered regulars?

Edgar RenterĂa and Orlando Cabrera were the only ones on a major league roster in 2007 I think

From Cartagena all the way south to about Sincelejo, there are new stadiums being built, baseball is really picking up fast, especially in the CTG area. One of my good buddies asked me for a spare glove which I had laying around. Cabrera has had a major impact helping this get off the ground, he helped renovate several playing fields in many local municipalities as well

I believe Monteria has a team too

El Polo - Baseball is HUGE on the coast. Through my buddy in BAQ, I've hung out with several guys who've played in the minors as well as the Renteria clan. Several have played in the Venezuelan leagues also.

Both Renteria and Cabrera have contributed to bringing international attention to the talent in Colombia, and MLB scouts are now actively seeking out Colombian talent. We'll be seeing a few more coastal Colombians crack the MLB rosters in the very near future.

From what I saw, baseball was always big in the coastal cities but recently it has been starting to trickle down into the municipalities as well. With the help of Cabrera renovating playing fields, those yucca & chicharron eating mofos can play ball too :)
