"World Wealth Report 2007, a study of the world's richest investors by Capgemini and Merrill Lynch, found that Latin America's wealthy devote only 3 percent of their financial assets to charitable donations. Comparatively, Asian tycoons donate 12 percent of their money, the Middle Eastern rich 8 percent, Americans 8 percent and Europeans 5 percent."

"Wait a minute. What did you just say? You're predicting $4-a-gallon gas? That's interesting. I hadn't heard that." -- Feb. 28, 2008 --George W. Bush, Washington, D.C.

Interesting, but Mr. Oppenheimer must be suffering from writer's block. He wrote a similar article a year or two ago. In this one he talks about the desire for status and kidnapping fears as reasons not to give. In the previous one, he speculated that the reluctance might be due to tax laws that don't favor charitable contributions.

Or maybe there are several factors at work, regardless of whatever the guy writes in his column this year.

It would allready be a big progress if the rich in Southamerica started to pay their taxes.

If it is true that kindness is weakness, and one lives with these traditions, I suppose that would explain it.

I find this Golden Rule of Colombia, if it is true, to be the one of the worst things about it. But if it is true, I must say that there are many examples where Colombians have been exceptionally kind to me.

I would settle for just having these rich people investing more into the country and inot education.

However, if the very Few rich colombian families that have held control of Colombians wealth were to cease to exist, that would be even better. Let a new generations with no ties to the Colonial era Spanish mentality exist.

Smile if you are a thinker!
