Opera in Colombia

I gather there's an opera house in Bogota. Anyone been/know much about it? Is there a broad range of performances there? Does the national company have much of a reputation internationally? Is there a broad range of performances there?

I'm no buff, but I'm definitely curious.

I would really like more complete information also. My son might come for a visit if he had the opportunity to perform. He is a PhD and professor of Opera in the US. He has still never visited here.

I saw Cavalleria Rusticana & Pagliacci (a well known double bill of 2 one-act operas) at the Teatro Colon in Bogota last September. I thought it was a nice evening out although the 2nd half was better produced. I'd imagine the main problem is having enough money to make a really nice production, not to mention paying top-tier singers to fly down and sing. It's not much of a season, maybe about two periods a year where they show an opera or two over a number of dates. It definitely ain't the Met, lol.

I think there's a short season in Medellin as well, probably done mostly with univ. talent I'd imagine. Here's a few pics I took inside and right outside the Teatro Colon. . .

The first pic of that statue was actually used as a stage prop in the Pagliacci. They must have brought it inside the theater during the first half and then it actually came in from above held by a rope or two right onto the stage, nicely & smoothly done! :)

Kalder, what is your opinion of Paul Potts?

And I wonder whether he would be (or perhaps is) well-received in Colombia.

Those are some great shots of Teatro Colon. I'd love to see something there sometime...

Here are shots of a newer theatre in Bogota Teatro Eliecer Galan

Dreadful! They have taken the character out of the old house. See the Fox Theater in Atlanta for an example of how to retain a buildings identity.

I hope I am mistaken and that is not the old theater.
