Omayra, Armero, Colombia

wikipedia
Omayra Sanchez was a 13-year old victim of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano which erupted on November 13, 1985 in Armero, Colombia, causing massive lahars which killed nearly 25,000. She was trapped for 3 days in water, concrete, and other debris before she died.

Her image was taken by photojournalist, Frank Fournier, shortly before she died. The image caused controversy due to the photographer's work and the Colombian government's inaction in working to prevent the Armero tragedy despite the forewarning that had been available, when it was published worldwide after the young girl's death.

It was taken in 1994 in Sudan by Kevin Carter this poor child was walking to a feeding station all by himself, when the child collapsed the photographer did nothing to help and left the child as soon the picture was taken, He later committed suicide.

I remember her when the Armero tragedy happened. I was still a child back then so of course I thought she would make it, little did I know that it was going to be impossible for her to her out of there alive.

I also remember all the people going on T.V. looking for the missing family members. They would all stand behind a blue curtain in front of a camera and would hold the pictures of the people they were looking for. Then they would all end with "Recuerda que hoy por mí, mañana por tí". Sadly enough that became a joke in school "hoy por mí, mañana por tí."

The joke would be,

"hoy por Mí mañana por mí."

Lo mío es mío lo tuyo es mío.

But a few years ago, there were also a kid who felt into an "alcantarilla" he got stuck there for long time, maybe Nicolas or something, there was a song on his name maybe signed by Fausto, I do´t recall.
