Oliver Stone in Colombia

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071230/ap_on_en_mo/colomba_hostages_stone

Among his pearls of wisdom, "I have no illusions about the FARC, but it looks like they are a peasant army fighting for a decent living," and 'When asked if he's concerned the heavily armed guerrillas could turn on him, he joked: "Well, if they took us, they would be swapping three hostages for 10," referring to himself and observers from five Latin America countries, France and Switzerland, along to supervise the release. "If I were them, that would make sense. But seriously, no, I'm not worried. The FARC knows there would be universal condemnation if they did that,"'

Bartolo I would venture to guess that Stone is comparing a governement army like the US Army to the FARC army. Like most in this world Stone doesn't really know much about the conflict and the players. Many are dumfounded to find out the billions have been spent and much effort has been wasted trying to wipe out out an army of peasants for 40 years. Then when someone finally sees the FARC camps they say, "These guys? These guys can't be stopped? These guys are causing all this trouble?"

It's like the rabbit on Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

So I was almost ready to clock out at work today at 2pm. The Mrs. calls me and asks if we can go to the Hilton for the New Year's Eve buffet and party. I get home, call - they are booked. I call two other similar places, same story. She is disappointed. She then gets on the horn with her friend, and then asks me if she can go out with her friends to a house party, without me. Obviously, I wasn't too pleased and we got into an argument. Her point is she didn't want to stay at home tonight (I didn't have any intention of that to begin with). And my argument was "what the hell are you thinking?" "Our first New Years together, and since we can't get into a $300 party that you didn't even know about until your friend suggested it; you now want to abandon me and ring in the New Year with other people." How do you say "Fuck you" in Spanish?

I guess that just goes to show you that someone can be good at his work but totally wrong in his political views. What does he have to gain by backing Chavez? Is he highly invested in Venezuelan government bonds? Can he really be defending the FARC? As an American I am ashamed of him. He is making a fool of himself. I wish he would just leave and never return. To all Colombian citizens: I apologize for the ignorance that has fallen out of his mouth. I feel your pain. It is paramount to a famous American supporting the Nazi's during WWII. How would he feel if an American group of rebels started a war against the American government and kidnapped his own son or wife. Can he really think the FARC cares about equity? Jesus Christ!?!

Thanks for the vote of confidence GS. But I don't know. I tried to talk to her and she went bezerk. Rapid fire Spanish ... I didn't understand most of it. I know the words mierda and puta and idiota were used constantly. I just sat there and let her yell. I finally had to get out of the house for a few minutes. When she saw me suiting up, she went ballistic again and acted like she was going to leave. I was gone for 20 minutes ... just needed to collect my thoughts. She is still here. I heard something upstairs and the dog is with me. Before I left I put the guns up and out of reach ... just in case. And it is hopefully a hint to her how irrational I think she is acting.

That passive-aggressive crap latinas are sooo good at makes me crazy. btw- you did the right thing, RJ, talking a walk. It's what I always did in lieu of saying tons of crap I'd regret later. ;)

Sausage, I have no idea what your point was.

GS and Eywed, I am sure that has a lot to do with it.

Thanks slguy. So far, I haven't fallen into that trap. (saying things I'll regret later) What is wierd, is something very similar to this evening, happened the same night 1999 / 2000. That was the nail in the coffin for my at the time fiance and me. And to this day, I have no idea what the hell happened. I occasionally talk to that ex, we are good friends these 8 years later, but she was never able to tell me what happened. That night, I came home from work, all in a good mood to celebrate, and she just started fighting with me. She ended up hysterical, took off, and didn't come home until 7am the next day. By the way, she is as gringa as you get, so it is definitely not a Latina thing. Boy, I guess I know how to pick them.

Now that I think about it, RJ- I'm guessing was just another culture thing. She prolly didn't realize that here, all doors are not always open- especially on New Years. She was pissed about that, and it just went downhill from there. Frustration on her part, I bet.

Hand in there, pal. She'll come around.

By the way, happy new year everybody.

I can't listen to why she is upset. She hasn't been able to articulate that yet. She has to say something before I can listen. As is apparently typical (sorry gals, no offense intended), I will have to 'best guess' what is going on up in her brain.

What a JACKASS!

"Shame on Colombia, shame on Uribe," Oliver Stone, the American filmmaker, told The Associated Press shortly before boarding one of three Venezuelan jets carrying the observers back to Caracas. Stone, who was invited by Chavez to document the handover, added "the FARC have no motive not to release these hostages." - Oliver Stone
