old Italian dude in Bogota

Does anyone know if the old Italian guy who seemed like he was dying of silicosis or emphysema or just a lifetime of hard livin is still renting apartments on Cl 12 con Kr 2? It is a white stucco building with a green metal door which visitors had to buzz their way in, and it has a large courtyard with about 5 or 6 little two story apartments. His maid used to refer to him as "Doctor" but maybe that was just because he looked distinguished and limped about in an effete, British manner.

I'm coming back to Bogota and looking for an apartment for 3 or 4 months and the craigslist ones are all way up North and there's no leads in the blogosphere.

Hi Gatogris,

"...and limped about in an effete, British manner".

As a newbie perhaps I should advise you that PBH entertains postings from numerous nationalities, "effete British" included.

Full marks though for a model lesson in how to get off to a good start and make friends.

Got any more dated, erroneous generalisations. Perhaps we could start a theme on the subject.....starting with those refering to N. Americans?

fecherklyn says on Nov 13, 2007, 15:26:

Beg pardon about my previous post. The writing style suggested you were from the USA but I now see I may have jumped to a wrong conclusion. The basic premise of my remarks remain valid however.

I don't even know what the hell that means. Is that something terribly offensive, like "walked about like a pasty gringo?" Wait, my example isn't offensive .... Anyway, I'll have to call my English friend and ask him why somebody would be offended by such a dastardly stereotype as "limping in an effete, British manner."

Certain generalizations are just good descriptors...he used to bellow like a crass, bellicose American flushed with ignorant self-rightousness...he used to stare blankly when someone made a joke like a wooden, humourless German incabable of self-irony...he used to retreat into bland politeness like nebbishy, milquetoast Canadian...he affected a certain grumpy superior attitude like a know-it-all Kiwi...etc.

On the grounds that you can write, and that those comments were directed at the British upper-classes and not at the proletariat, (como yo), I may try to help. Are you talking about the colonial place towards Carrera 3, (11-87 2-15), cos if so they are advertising - tel: 336 0500. Or do you mean the sort of thirties/forties built place higher up? Cos if so, I don't know. Plenty of signs up advertising rooms, apartaments, but doesn't mean a thing, frankly - Know what I mean old chap?

La vida es una rutina

gatogris says on Nov 14, 2007, 15:20:

Thanks old top, I think it IS the colonial place towards Carrera 3, getting pretty close to the Chorro. I'm going to phone them up.

Perhaps when I land we can toss off a pint. Oops, wrong descriptor. There was a place not far from there that used to be the "dog's bollocks."

gatogris says on Nov 14, 2007, 15:21:

Incidently, any other suggestions in that area would be brill.

Alma del Norte says on Nov 14, 2007, 21:17:

And when would you be gracing us with your prescence?

A word that figures both in the lexicon of Britain's aristocracy and its plebian classes is 'wanker'.

Incidentally.

You strike me as being very far from being a wanker.

And I'm very sorry to hear that you're dead.

Alma del Norte says on Nov 15, 2007, 08:49:

I fear that rumours of my premature demise have been grossly exaggerated... I think.

Kalder, as for you, I expected better of someone of your class and breeding. Such foul utterances, surely only serve to besmurch your own character, and that of our once fine nation.

La vida es una rutina

gatogris says on Nov 15, 2007, 09:03:

Indeed, no need to get shirty there Mr. Kalder, I'm sure your command of both vernaculars is absolutely spiffing.

Besides, no real offence meant to the English, after all the 'Greek prediliction' of its upper classes is well-documented. More greek than the Greeks, like the man said.

As one of the most famous bonesmokers to hail from fair Albion put it, the true prince of ponces: "patriotism is the virtue of the vicious."

As for when I roll into Bogota, Alma del Norte, well shit fire and save matches, that'll be in less than a fortnight.

Gatogris, could you write my memoirs for me? You are welcome to spruce it up with all that colorful British English that didn't survive the US Revolution!

I have 2 new goals in life now! For you to write my memoirs, and to take English classes from La Campiña!
