Okay One Question about Colombia please try to help

Okay my question is about retirement. Here in the USA we have the Social Security system where after I retire we will get a certain amount of money to kind of help with expenses. What my question is does Colombia have anything like that. Something similar to the SS system or is that something only done in America. Please fill me in with this information. Thanks.

They have a similar system with a much younger retirement age. I think my wife was telling me that she can start collecting at 55 or 58? Before she left Colombia she arranged to be able to continue paying into the system every month so that she would preserve her benefits.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

My mother-in-law collects her Colombian pension here in the US. My mother collects her UK pension here in the US (thank God), so I think in most countries you can collect your SS or pension wherever you may reside. I plan to collect my US SS (if they have one still) in Colombia.

Social Security Yes, in Colombia there´s Social Security, you get health benefits AND 75% of your last salary each month when you retire.
Now, in Colombia we have a dual system, private7 and public and workers can choose which one they want. They can retire with the public social security system or with the private, the private is a group of companies that offer the same health services and will pay you when you retire.
I´ve read that in the US they´re trying to have a similar system.

It's a Little Complicated... to explain here in any detail. Generally speaking the answer is Yes. I believe, as utopiacowboy said, the retirement is age 55 after a minimum number of years working.

My caleña's friend sister retired at 40 something... After 20 years of working at the Electric/sewer company. She says she's the youngest in the line when they pick up their checks.

Maybe it is better now But my wife seems to think there are a lot od companies that fire their employees shortly before they become vested in retirement...

Yes the US wants a similar system where you can decide either to go with the traditional system or you can take a portion of your SSI and invest in the stock market. You dont have to do that if you dont want to but that money can not be used before retirement. You can earn more money sometimes if you invest correctly but other times you might lose depending on the stock market. Its sounds good but i am not sure if it will work.

lpdiver is correct People who are in private pension systems often get screwed because, the companies fire the employee shortly before the are entitle to retirement benefits.....It's horrible. And as I understand, they get what they contributed back, but the matching corporate portion is not paid.....

Not very pretty. And this problem is increasingly more prevalent...

looks at a high stack of boxes ... full of shares and options ... all high tech ... toilet paper now, at least it is worth less ... but I prefer the soft stuff ...

I wouldn't risk my SS on the stock market.
