Obama in Colombia!

Hola!

In Cali, I have been switching back from CNN Espanol #37 & CNN English #39.

Obama is speaking now at the Democratic Convention in Denver! He just said that in 10 years, we will end our dependence on oil from the Middle East!

It is nice not apologizing for what the USA has done bad. I like to say, listen to good things NOW coming from the USA! People in Cali, Colombia consider him better for Colombia than McCain, even though McCain says he is in favor of the Colombian free trade agreement!

He said McCain will follow Osama bin Laden to the gates of Hell, but won't go to his cave!

Maybe others saw Obama's speech in Colombia?

yes, didn't fujimori end up being charged with corruption, or something like that?

The fact of the matter is that the US, just by its shear economic size, is a very relavent country, especially in the Americas....The Bush administration has squandered so many opportunities to lead, and to bring positive changes in the region, from the Mexico border southward....To let McCain be president would be a travesty....

For better or worse, the economic future of the Americas are intrinsically tied together. I think Obama is the man to be a strong positve influence in the free world. If nothing else, maybe we will see alot more Made in the USA tags, and a lot more clothes made in Colombia, and less of everything else made in China.

One thing is for sure, I don't think our country is capable of surviving any more of the repressive republican policies, and I think Obama can give Americans a reason to be proud to be Americans again.

I can tell you, G W Bush's America isn't my America; the one I am proud of and the one I remember where my grandparents shed tears on the forth of July and we stood with pride and determination, facing our flag, reciting the pledge of allegience. GW Bush and Dick Cheney should be ashamed of how they have left this country. One thing is for sure, I have faith that Obama and crew has a strong desire to build a strong, compassionate, and proud America again!!!

Kalico buzzbeecd, Monita and others,

It is widely known that Obama writes his own speeches. There were many powerful and moving moments last night that set Obama apart from most presidental canidates throughout history and in the company of some of the best. His idea that it's not about him, it's about the american people made me feel proud to be an american for the first time in many years. Having a leader like Bush puts a damper on my patriotism. Also the idea of Dem's and Rep's fighting, working, dying for not red states or blue states but the United States really unites us and we need to fight for what we all need not just what a few selfish, rich, ignorant modofokers need. Anyone who said that Obama will be bad for america is either rich or ignorant and maybe both. You don't know, you can't see the future. Who knows what will happen...
Give the dude a chance! He's intelligent, charismatic, an excellent speaker and uniter of the clans. He reminds me of Fajardo in that I believe he will wisely invest in education, healthcare, and community programs. He is someone that can do something we have been trying to do for many years and that is help us deal with and solve racial problems in the US. Coming back to an earlier point he says that he isn't going to do it, we are going to do it and he is just the person that is going to lead us to what WE want for the country. McCain seems like a good dude but his policies will bring us the same problems of the last 8 years. Iraq, Katrina economy and worse. McCain, tell me what you can do for america with the same conviction as Barack? John McCain really doesn't know how to respond.

esanch36 says on Aug 29, 2008, 09:32:

The media loved the novelty of a black candidate with a real chance to become president, and his left-wing vision of the world was largely their vision as well. There was a veritable media honeymoon for Obama.

There was outrage in the mainstream media when ABC anchor man Charles Gibson asked Obama a serious question about the economic effects of a capital gains tax. Who interrupts honeymooners to talk economics?

The fact that Senator Obama did not have a very coherent answer made things worse-- for Charles Gibson. Since Obama can do no wrong in the eyes of many of his supporters, they resented Gibson's having asked him such a question.

The question, incidentally was why Senator Obama was advocating a higher capital gains tax rate, when experience had shown that the government typically collected more revenue from a lower capital gains tax rate than from a higher rate.

Senator Obama acted as if he had never thought about it that way. He probably hadn't. He is a politician, not an economist.

Politically, what matters to the left-wing base that Obama has been playing to for decades is sticking it to "the rich." What effect that has on the tax revenues received by the government is secondary, at best.

What effect a higher capital gains tax rate will have on the economy today and on people's pensions in later years is a question that is not even on Senator Obama's radar screen.

Economists may say that higher capital gains tax rates can translate into lower levels of economic activity and fewer jobs, but Obama will leave that kind of analysis to the economists. He is in politics, and what matters politically is what wins votes right here and right now.

The kind of talk that won the votes-- and the hearts-- of the left-wing base of the Democratic Party during the primaries may not be enough to carry the day with voters in the general election. So Senator Obama has been changing his tune or, as he puts it, "refining" his message.

This was not the kind of "change" that the true believers among Obama's supporters were expecting. So there has been some wavering among the faithful and some ups and downs in the polls.

Despite an impressive political machine and a huge image makeover this year to turn a decades-long, divisive grievance-promoting activist into someone who is supposed to unite us all and lead us into the promised land of "change," little glimpses of the truth keep coming out.

The elitist sneers at people who believe in religion and who own guns, the Americans who don't speak foreign languages and the views of the "typical white person," are all like rays of light that show through the cracks in Obama's carefully crafted image.

The overwhelming votes for Obama in some virtually all-white states show that many Americans are ready to move beyond race. But Obama himself wants to have it both ways, by attributing racist notions to the McCain camp that has never made race an issue.

The problem with clever people is that they don't know when to stop being clever-- and Senator Obama is a very clever man, perhaps "too clever by half" as the British say. But maybe he can't keep getting by with glittering generalities

Can we afford more debt? We can’t afford to pay for the programs we have now. Social Security and Medicare are seriously under funded for the future and all we have in the trust funds are IOU’s from the federal government. Now can we afford more sweeping federal programs such as health care? Sure it would be great but how do we pay for it? We can’t pay for what we have. Everyone wants more and more as long as they don’t have to pay for it. Let the rich pay for it. That’s what the Democrats say. The top 5% are already paying for 80% of the taxes. We have the second highest corporate tax rate in the world and wonder why the jobs are leaving the USA? Duh!!!
We better get someone running this country other than politicians that are voted on by name recognition. The free lunch is coming to an end and the longer we wait to begin to fix it the more the fix will hurt. $4.00 a gallon gas is nothing to what our economy will be like soon if it isn’t on the right track.

McCain can say goodbye to any voter who really thinks experience matters. Palin has six years as mayor of a town of 5000, and a year and a half as Governor of Alaska. That’s it! And she only got the governor’s job at all, because the incumbent governor appointed his own daughter to the U.S. Senate, and tried to do an end-around against the legislature on a shaky gas pipeline deal, which blew his chances for reelection. McCain managed to find the a candidate LESS qualified to be commander-in-chief, than Quayle was! McCain did the one thing guaranteed to make Obama look like Roosevelt by comparison. In her first appearance with McCain, Palin said “Eye-ran‿ and “nuke-ya-lar weapons‿ just like Bush does. Yeesh. Earlier, she actually said on camera: “what is it exactly that the VP does every day?"

McCain can wave goodbye to anyone who thinks the VP choice is important. Sending this beauty queen to debate national security and diplomacy with Biden is cruel. Since McCain has THREE medical conditions which could incapacitate him (melanomas, 6 of 10 warning signs of Alzheimers, multiple suicide attempts), there is a serious risk that this Twinkie could become Commander-in-Chief. ...And McCain can wave goodbye to all those national-security voters who think foreign policy and military matters are important.

Goodbye to any voter who cares about ethical government. McCain actually picked a running mate who is RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF AN ETHICS INVESTIGATION, in the state legislature, on abuse-of-power charges! Picking her for VP would be like picking Larry Craig or Tom Delay: THEY would actually be more fit for the job than Palin! The investigation could run all the way through the campaign season: one news cycle after another, clogged up with this story. We’ll hear from the husband and the wife in the ugly divorce/custody case, like a white-trash soap opera. Palin showed she can’t even play the game like a professional at the sandlot level, and McCain just put her in the World Series. And there will also be stories about the rest of the corrupt Alaska Republican machine, to include Ted Stevens and Don Young. There is video of Stevens endorsing Palin. The irony here is that she is campaigning as a reformer!

McCain will LOSE female votes, not gain them. He is insulting women, assuming they will be stupid enough to ignore the fact that Palin opposes a woman’s right to choose (and is ignorant, and unqualified), just because she’s a she. If McCain really had a hard-on to hire a woman, what about Hutchison, or Susan Collins...? Even among the subset of Republican women, he chose Beauty Queen over Competence. The only women this will bring into McCain’s camp are women who are stupid enough to be conned, and McCain has already cornered the Stupid Vote, so it’s a wasted effort. Palin even had the gall to try to hijack Hillary’s “eighteen million cracks in the glass ceiling‿ narrative in her first public appearance, so Hillary will speak out on this REAL fast.

McCain can say goodbye to anyone who advocates fiscal responsibility: although Palin claims to be a budget-cutter, she signed into law the biggest budget in state history. McCain can wave goodbye to anyone who supports equality, since Palin opposes same-sex marriage. And for anyone who takes education seriously: Palin, an evangelical, wants creationism taught in public schools.

Goodbye to all those other VP finalists, who he wanted to campaign for him, as surrogates. You think Romney will bust his butt for McCain in Michigan, when McCain just proclaimed to the world that Romney’s less qualified to be commander-in-chief than this prom queen?

Goodbye to all those white men in places like the Rust Belt, who ever lost out on a job because a less-qualified woman scooted in ahead of them. They’re Obama men now.

Environmentalists: it’s not just that she wants to drill in ANWR. She sued BUSH’S Interior Department for putting polar bears on the endangered list. She’s to the RIGHT of BUSH.

The issue isn’t Palin, it’s McCain and his scary, IMPAIRED decision-making. Obama said that he has better judgment than McCain, and McCain proved him right. McCain panicked after Obama’s masterful performance in Denver, and threw a desperate Hail Mary. Why else would he bypass the dozens of candidates who are ALL more qualified for the job than Palin? This is McCain’s first major decision at the presidential level, and he did something rash and stupid, just like Bush always seems to do. Even some Republicans, like Kay Bailey Hutchison and the Maryland governor, are starting to signal their dismay, to the tune of “who the hell is she?‿

Evangelicals love her. Rush called her a “babe‿. FOX says Palin has foreign policy credentials because “...she is right up there in Alaska right next door to Russia.‿

Bottom Line; if McCain was looking for a Female to draw away the Hillary Voters, he could have picked a Experienced Heavyweight like Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Susan Collins or Elzabeth Dole--all with sterling credentials and ready to step in the CIC role should that be needed. Not the case with Ms Palin. God help the USA should she be on Watch when that dreaded 3 am phone call comes with a finger on the Button,,,Voters really need to seriously consider their Vote choice with this lady(palin) in the mix. In her own element, Alaska, she seems like a pretty nice person, as a VP Candidate not,,,Very Perplexing choice

That is something that has been missing from Washington for many years. Any president can get more than enough advice from experts in any field. You need someone with common sense to filter it and make a good decision. A decision not based on which lobbyist donations to his campaign. Or which special interest group opposed which new regulation being proposed.

And Dan Quayle was a Senator at that and after the 88 election, he was hardly heard of again, except for the Butt of all those "WetHead" Jokes because of his many trips to the WH Gym. This is exactly the problem. This thinking dooms you to never getting anything changed. I say throw all the bums out. We don’t need professional politicians running the country. It was never intended to be this way.

Mike, you sound like a ham sandwich democrat. If the democrats put a ham sandwich on the ballot you would vote for it. There are republicans that do the same. Issues aren’t Dem. Vs Rep.
You say things can’t get much worse under Obama. Jajajajajajajaja Sure they can. They can get a lot worse under either of these two candidates. As bad as you think things are, how do you think things will be when SS and Medicare, Medicaid trust funds are broke and the national debt is eating up 75% of all of our tax revenue just paying the interest on the debt? The national debt is a snowball at the top of Mt. Everest. If it picks up much more speed it will be unstoppable. We need people that as soon as they take office they are not looking at what they can do to get reelected. What group can I buy off so I can get reelected?
Every credit card has a limit. The USA’s Platinum Card is about maxed out. Soon the bank (China-Saudi Arabia. exc) is going to say you’re at your credit limit and we are not lending you any more. So what then. Well I imagine the politicians will then turn on the printing presses and then print more money to pay the bills. Massive inflation. $200. for a loaf of bread. Think it can’t happen? Think again. On our present course it not only could happen, it will happen. And as long as all the sheep keep looking at this the same way we are doomed. It is total irresponsibility to continue to spend more money on any new programs until we are on good financial ground again, but they are both pandering trying to buy as many groups as they can before November.

Anyone here ever think about retiring to Colombia? Well when 1 dollar is equal to 1 COP how far will your pension or SS get you? We will need to retire to Somalia or some 3 world country because the dollar will be worthless.
Why is it that people can’t see any farther than tomorrow? Tomorrow we will not be broke. But if we miss this window of opportunity to fix things, in 20 to 25 years that snowball that is rolling down Mt. Everest will be so big that it will eat the US economy and it will not even slow it down.

The USA is acting like the person that borrows and spends every cent he can, because he thinks, I may die tomorrow. Well guess what? What if you don’t? Guess what, Your kids will be here, Guess what, Your grand kids will be here.
I hope to live long enough to retire to Colombia but if the USA keeps blowing the tax payers (That would be yours and mine, and unfortunately our kids and grandkids) money know one will be able to retire. Its my retirement they are screwing with so I take it very seriously.

scumbuster says on Aug 30, 2008, 08:31:

If you look at the facts!!!! We have had 1 year in the last 50 of a balanced budget. This was a bipartisan effort with the republicans having control of both the house and senate and Dems having the Pres. We had a defecate for many years before this and every year after this. When you get right down to it the pres. can’t spend a cent. It’s the house and senate that are currently run by the dems. that make the budgets and they are only signed or vetoed by the pres. I seem to remember that every year the house makes a big deal out of the budget submitted by the president saying it is DOA. The politicians answer is, we have a government program to fix every problem so vote for me. Both parties are to blame. The dollar tanked because neither party will address this countries financial problems.
I can sit here and put my head in the sand because I am doing quite well currently. I have a good job. I can save a few bucks and if stupidity in Washington didn’t rule I would retire to a quite comfortable life. Actually even if they screw things up royally will still have a decent retirement, but what kind of country are we leaving for our kids? I have done quite well under George Bush, but that doesn’t mean I agree with how he has spent us into the ground. Obama is no better and doesn’t even try to hide it. He wants to spend just as much as Bush, just on different things. Sure you can have the debate what is better to spend the money on, but the fact is we don’t have the money to spend. So what will happen when he spends it anyway? That snowball just keeps rolling and getting bigger and bigger. And it appears you are short sighted enough not to care. I really can’t stand McCane or Obama. I would have voted Ron Paul, and still may. The only slight bright spot I see is Sarah Palin, only because she isn’t a Washington insider. Just maybe she can continue to expose government misspending and corruption as she has done to both parties in Alaska. But I don’t hold out much hope of improvement until there are desperate times in the USA. Then everyone will cry, what happened. It’s voting for a bum just because he wares the title Republican or Democrat.

How come you don't elaborate on the Billions Bush is spending foolishly on Iraq and the Trillion(s) in the hole he will leave us when he hikes it out of Office? AND at a time when Iraq NOW has been shown to have $78 Billion in the Bank while he(bush) squanders our taxpayer's Dollars away foolishly. I don't detect any criticism,,

Another thing on the Medicare Situation, South Florida has been named Medicare Fraud capital of the USA! They caught 36 Cubans who recently scammed the system then hightailed it back to Cuba. The scammers were reported to Medicare and my Question is, Why didn't the adminsitration do something to stem the Fraud. Same with SS--lots of Fraud but the Current Administration has done little to nothing to investigate the complaints. And the Complaints turned out to be true! Finally after the Miami Herald wrote a Big Exposee on the extent of the Fraud, only then did this Administration get cracking and investigate. By that time the Scammers ran back to Cuba. Plenty of $$$$$ for a useless Iraq War but NO money to hire SS and Medicare Investigators to protect us again, the American Taxpayer. 4 more years of this--No Way Jose

These are two sectors that aren't often energized by the same person (of course the last republican you voted for President was able to do that)

I've been very impressed with what I have found out about her, both her personal and political history. Based on my initial research and inquiry, it would not surprise me to see her become the nominee for POTUS one day!

Just think, if anyone is concerned about her lack of experience and a VP only a heartbeat away from being the President, that same concern becomes magnified with Obama...there's isn't even that "one heartbeat away" buffer.

billyb says on Aug 31, 2008, 21:59:

And now you know Biden:

Plagiarism can have catastrophic consequences for one's career as a student and even later on in life—and the higher one's ambition takes one, the higher the stakes. In 1987, for instance, Senator Joe Biden, who was seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, was accused of plagiarizing passages in speeches and interviews from the oratory of a British politician, Neil Kinnock. Here are some of the passages in question:

Kinnock (original)

Why am I the first Kinnock in a thousand generations to be able to get to university? Why is Glenys the first woman in her family in a thousand generations to be able to get to university?

Was it because our predecessors were thick? Does anybody really think that they didn't get what we had because they didn't have the talent or the strength or the endurance or the commitment? Of course not. It was because there was no platform upon which they could stand.

Biden version

I started thinking as I was coming over here, why is it that Joe Biden is the first in his family ever to go to a university? Why is it that my wife who is sitting out there in the audience is the first in her family to ever go to college?

Is it because our fathers and mothers were not bright? . . . No, it's not because they weren't as smart. It's not because they didn't work as hard. It's because they didn't have a platform upon which to stand . . .

It turned out Biden had also borrowed passages from old campaign speeches by Robert Kennedy and had inflated his academic record. But oratory has a long tradition of borrowing and even "heavy lifting," as speechwriters call it, so Biden stayed alive in the presidential race. The last straw, however, came when it turned out that twenty years earlier Biden had received a failing grade in a law school course for plagiarizing a legal article (he'd given a single footnote while lifting five full pages from the article). Biden said he'd been unaware of the appropriate standards for legal briefs, but the public was unimpressed. His campaign collapsed and he withdrew from the race.
