"Mí Tío" - now in postproduction/film in Salento

The editing is taking awhile, but we filmed the whole thing in about 20 days, exclusively in Salento. The guys and gals from some new novela (I think Caracol) kept popping by to see what we were up to.

Thanks! I'll need it. I've lost so much weight from not sleeping during the shoot. Thought it'd be easier in the editing, but not so...

Nice photo...

Are you cutting a trailer?

Wow Bufalo, it looks interesting. Did you guys shoot the Valle de Cocora? I hope so, it would look beautiful on film. BTW, I carved my name into the tree at the top of those long stairs.

bufalo says on Apr 27, 2008, 20:40:

I too am looking forward to the final job as well... The trailer will probably wait for a bit, after the rough cut is done (about 35% so far done). We didn't go to Cocora, BUT there are extra scenes to shoot just in case we don't hit the 90 minute mark. Those may take place there.

Aurgh... no.... it is soo slow. weekends and evenings when schedules permit with my friend but it is inching along. I've also had to develop some graphics and digital models so that has been time-consuming too (my computer is crapping out so I have to use my work computer which is *such* a drag nothing worse than staying another hour when you've already been there 7 or 8). I am pleased to say that although I was really daunted at first it's not so bad now and I am starting to get excited.

edit: I confess that first morning in Bogota I was tempted to stay in bed and forget the whole thing.. but I am so glad I didn't becuase despite the long hours it was a really fun & postive experience for me.... with more to come.

bufalo says on Apr 27, 2008, 21:56:

sure that happens. The first few days of my shoot I just wanted to go home and watch "Barney" with my daughter, then things took off well. I remember you (all of us actually) having a good time during your shoot. This story was the screenplay I worked on at night in the hotel (freezing, wrapped in a blanket in a room the size of a cell) after we spent the days on the Transmillenio. By the end, I had the whole system down pat. I have to go back next week (still didn't finish my dental work!) and I can't remember a lot.

Cool.. I was wondering if this was it. I'm so glad that you are making it. Geez I have one of the schedule books sitting right here, I wish I could just give it to you!!!

I'd give a synopsis, but it'd be a bit wordy. I have one saved somewhere on my computer, I'll look for it....

Hi there Bufalo... How interesting! I'd like to see the final product too!!
I'm in editing as well... So, I understand perfectly how frustrating it could get sometimes...
But cheer up!!!!
The bright side is that you don't have to deal with directors trying to explain to you what kind of result they want!

Have a good one!
=)

bufalo says on Apr 28, 2008, 08:17:

That's true. A lot of stuff about the production was in my head too and I drove production crazy. Especially at 5:AM when I needed the stuff by 6.30 AM....

I'd love to just hand the tapes over to an editor, but no money nor time to do so. The editing is frustrating, we worked with one camera and the actors had trouble with continuity - one shot hands on hips, OOOPS! other angle hands are folded, etc...

What are you editing?

My husband does some editing too and it is a hard work apart from doing the camera too, they had to do a 12 part series and it was too much for him you know camera editing apart from his other jobs, he had to bring an ex-BBC editor to help in at least in 3 of the episodes as the deadline was near, he was brilliant well he edited for the BBC for 10 years he was really good.

Now they are doing another series but this time on their term, so far everything is going well, and discovery channel is interested. cross finger

jejejejejeje! One of the reasons I wanted to do this film here is that it has nothing to do with: drugs, sicarios, prepagos, poor people, prostis, anything with the war, extortion, kidnapping, etc. Would like to have people think a bit beyond that stuff. (amazing how a few people were surprised that those elements aren't in a film in Colombia, and these are pros in the biz)

I did not want jump into bandwagon to congratulate you when you posted ""Mí Tío" - now in postproduction/film in Salento"
The reason were two: You are from Canada and please do not take my comment in a personal way (I was thinking about other stuff) I think you know what I mean and it was mainly because I have seen lots of documentaries, movies or short stories about Colombia where ALL of them fall into the same mediocre stories and the same stereotypes! However, when you made this comment, “jejejejejeje! One of the reasons I wanted to do this film here is that it has nothing to do with: drugs, sicarios, prepagos, poor people, prostis, anything with the war, extortion, kidnapping, etc. Would like to have people think a bit beyond that stuff. I wish you a real successful film and may Mi Tio opens more cinematography avenues for you and your crew!

If someone can tell an interesting story, who cares where that person is from...

The Vendedora de Rosas, Sicario, and La Virgen de los Sicarios, included violence, prostitution, drugs, sicarios, poor people, and extortion among other things, simple because it is a fact of life in Colombia.

In fact, I saw all three films as an indictment of Colombia culture, sympathetic to the world many Colombians have to endure on a daily basis.

Say what you will, but I truly enjoyed the films for their honesty in portaying Colombian's being victimized by other Colombian's.

The stories serve a purpose in showing Colombians the reality of their own actions; good, bad, or otherwise. It's a WAKE UP CALL to Colombia!

A reocurring theme in The Vendedora de Rosas that I found to be disturbing was the sexual predatory advancements toward young girls by Colombian men, some of the girls where as young as eight. It seems many Colombian girls have to fight off men from a very young age. This is what people should be against, not the movie, but the abuse of young women.

I applaud the directors for not being afraid to show the darks side of Colombian society.

Hopefully, their work can make a difference with future generations who do not want this reality to be the future of Colombia.

I'd rather see an honest film with violence, than some silly popcorn movie, with a contrived happy ending to make people happy for two hours.

Vive La Cinéma!

Monpirri - I'm from the US, not Canada and of course I don't take what you say personally, never did never will, one of the reasons I read your posts. Aways back through PM's I told you about the idea and you related how you'd like to read the script. I sent it to you a few weeks back and even emailed you about a week ago - maybe I have your email wrong? Reason I did so was because the film doesn't show the negative and I know how much you'd dig that.

Lauthra - ahh the long days, see if you lose as much weight as I did.

M.T. I like certain aspects of theose films as well, but what I don't like is the WHY of them being made. I've met Victor Gaviria (actually again last week) - IMHO the guy DIGS the negative. Sure he may say he's against it, but I've seen the gleam in his eye when the violence is brought up. I've seen the same response with a lot of people.

I've had several actors, producers, techies, even places I went to look for (no luck) for financing and it was almost the same - first they talked about how they hated Colombia being portrayed in film and how great it would be to make something without those things, THEN went on to ask (with the gleam!) about how cool it would be to have hit-men, drug use, blah, blah, blah. I'd stop them there and remind them about how they supposedly felt about Colombia's bad image, then gave a synopsis. Most were amazed about how:

there can be a "story" that takes place in Colombia, not so much a "colombian story". Most loved the synopsis and I got all my actors for free, nobody A-list, but some have been in national novelas. All the sets were donated too, even the fire department, police, and civil defense unit let us use their space/people.

I had trouble with some of those other movies because it just seemed to glorify the negative. If it's put there with a purpose, like you said an honest film, then fine I like that better, but I don't see those directors doing it to actually serve a purpose other than film sales. Showing the dark side is actually way easier.

I can attest to Bufalo's american roots, citizen of the world that I feel he is, the accent gives origins away. I'm sure he heard mine too. It's weird to suddenly hear one when one is chatting IRL.... when I read people I can't layer on accents at all until after meeting them.

It was me about the copyrights, mostly about music and novelas - funny thing about the accents, I see it too. They are usually more obvious to me after I know where someone is from...
