Now a Colombian citizen!!

Whoa I am very happy. Everything was easily taken care of. I got my temporary cedula (takes about a year for the real one to arrive in the states). Anyways all i had to do was get my birth certificate and a blood test done. It's sweet i got my colombian passport too!!! I cant wait to get out there. Who knows i may just fall in love out there and never come back. Wish me luck! Ryan

Dual National? What were you before?

Are you a dual national now?

Now you need a visa everytime you want to travel anywhere....

Blood Test The blood test is so that you know what blood type you are, not for disease, nor for dna.

And if you are a dual citizen, you do not have to get a visa to everywhere you go, you just have to fly using your U.S. passport (if that is your other citizenship)

from what they told me about my daughter, who is dual US-Colombian. Everytime she flies in/out of Colombia, she must use her colombian passport, when in/out of the US, then the US passport. Having both helps out a lot visa-wise. There are countries that charge us gringo whereas the colombians don't need one nor pay. Brazil for instance, I had to pay $100 for a visa, my wife zip. The same went for when we were going to go to.... Chile (?) we didn't end up going, but it was the same situation.

yeah, I'm a bit confused too, he got it while in the states? I'm guessing one of his parents are colombian because he mentioned his birth certificate and applied for it there (in the US).

Ryan, what Specifically have you found that this Colombian Visa has entitled you to? Has it moved you to the front of the line any faster as a US Resident visa does here in the USA? What are the tangible benefits other then purchasing health insurance and facilitating home ownership? I have asked this Question here several times before but never received a clear cut answer,,,,

MM If you read his original post one can assume he is a US citizen or permanent resident, "I cant wait to get out there. Who knows i may just fall in love out there and never come back."

He did not get a visa he was given Colombian citizenship or he would not have been eligible for a Colombian passport, "It's sweet i got my colombian passport too!!!"

If he is not already a US PR or citizen he gains no advantage from Colombian citizenship in any immigration process.

Would make banking somewhat easier, voting in elections and running for political office office is about it. I saw no real advantage over Colombian permanent resident status vies a vie the citizenship status. Quite frankly it was not worth the additional paperwork to achieve citizenship.

BTW you do NOT need to be a Colombian citizen to purchase health insurance nor does it make any difference in owning a home.

Thanks Gator, that was what I was after,,, I thought it opened some magical door as many Posters seemed to hold it in some type of mystical high esteem and I wondered why ; You have answered my question. Would it be correct to assume in the rare case where an American wanted to open a business it may be of some Tangible value in this venture also? I know in Mexico, some Canadians marry Mexicanas just for this reason but then, many more Americans live in Mexico then Colombia, especially in the Greater Gaudalajara Jalisco(state). This Mexican Residency(papers) has real value in that country. A few months ago, I saw where two Agencies in Guadalajara were looking for American Real Estate Agents and American Nurses, even American Auto Technicians to service all the American Retirees located there!

Mike... it's not a lot different than obtaining permanent residence in the USA. By the time you are eligible for PR you should have been in country long enough to establish your bona fides especially for banking. Three to five years of residence IN Country before MRE will grant PR status.

Thanks Again Gator Your comments on this are informative and interesting in dispelling some of the myths...BTW, I wrote to Craigslist.com asking them to list Bogota as a website location. They have Santiago, Chile, BA, Argentina, Rio, Mexico city as some of their SA(latin america) Locations. This website would be of huge value to posters(and bogota residents also) here so if more write CL and ask for Bogota, they will add it.

PBH Posters-Write Craigslist.org To Add Colombia to their International Country Listings. Beleive this is located in their Feedback section on the left side of the Main Webpage. They have several large South American cities already on the List and if they receive enough requests, they add other cities. They are Invaluable for researching Real Estate, Wanted,Free, buy, sell ,rent, personals, lodging, Bike, Motor Car sales ect, Barter(permuta). I am sure for those who use Craigslist already you already know the value as its all free. I use them now to sell Bicycles, Cars, household items-many of the same items I use eBay for only this(CL) is free! Usually they start with the Capital Cities and later smaller venues in the country! http://craigslist.org

I tried to do that a while ago, but couldn't get through. They have other cities on there that don't have as many gringos as bogota (I believe)
