Not Colombian enough

Regarding my buddy Rubio’s comment, I do play tambora (when drunk enough), and very traditional cumbias.
Dear Madam moderator, may I chat about this? Recently I was warned, under the threat of getting banned, for not being Colombian enough and discussing subjects not considered Colombian enough such as donkey tales, drunken violence and whoring around plus poverty, classism, injustice and racism etc.
Sorry MATE but I don’t know about real Colombian stuff like ice storms or classical music, latin rock, racial harmony or Colombianas chasing blacks and Indios to have their babies or even about museums.
I await the moderators response to see if I’m allowed to discuss yet another thing I picked while running around barefooted in Colombia.
Picture to follow.

elmo This is how I think it works:

- To a bunch of foreigners who have only been to Colombia once or twice on vacation, you are the epitome of colombianess, you are the guy who has been places they haven't.

- To a colombian who has lived all his life in colombia you are "agringado". After so many years in gringolandia, many of their ideas and beliefs have rubbed off on you. Having lived in the States from a rather tender age, the American way of life is now deeply embedded in your soul. New York is you, and any colombian in colombia can see that miles away whether you like it or not. No matter I eat arepas for breakfast everyday, no matter you play the tambora. The fact that you are so outspoken about the injustices of colombian society is a direct result of your American upbringing - you learned things were different elsewhere, you have a point of reference.

In reality, you are not a member of a nationality anymore, you are a member of a diaspora. When you are in the states you feel very colombian, when you are in colombia you feel very gringo. Your home is a fusion of both countries that exists in your heart and mind. WE are basically homeless Elmo..... we are hybrids, we are an entirely new subspecie, get used to it!

Mr. Defoque, I see that you are very piqued about my comment of not considering you a "real" Colombian. May I remind you that I offered thar comment as an answer to a direct question and I was not warning you, advising you, critizising you or even judging you by that statement. Moreover, I spoke as Desi, "regular poster", offering my own Very Humble Opinion about your cultural identity, how I saw it and not as Desi "The Big Bad Moderator". I would truly appreciate if you didn't try to confuse the issue and gain sympathies on false premises.

I have NOT ever censured you, sent you a warning, contacted you by e-mail, deleted your posts or edited your posts except ONE TIME DONE IN JEST and I reposted your post right back, so please, don't address yoir complain to me because I've had the patience of Santo Job with you, with the distaste that I have for many of your favorite topics, especially the negative light you always present Colombian women, my friends and my relatives (by marriage)and whom I appreciate very much and find your accusations of their behaviour totally out of line and very untrue.

COLOMBICHE,
once again you've come to my rescue amplifying and defining more precisely just what I meant with my comment of Mr.Defoque's cultural identity. Believe me, I know what you are talking about. I'm one of those hybrids with multiple identities myself, having spent most of my adult life away from my country of birth. Thank you for explaining this binational cultural identity issue so eloquently!.

Cheers,
Desi

Last week in Bogota I was hanging around with a Canadian-raised friend who is a Guatemalan - she has the typical central american indian features. We were really dressed down because we had been travelling around a lot and getting no sleep. I was wearing sandals and old jeans and an arhuaco mochila, she was wearing joggers and runners. We went to all the "posh" shops at Andino mall. We walked into a high end shoe store and the girls who work there just stared us down and wouldn't come to our service, they kept fussin over these upper middle class gold jewellery wearing middle aged parrots who were trying on several pairs of shoes. I got so pissed they were ignoring my friend's request to try on shoes, damn, this girl makes big money working in the oil industry up north, she is a loaded injun.

Finally we called the girl over, she was snotty at first, but when she saw we were buying over half a million pesos worth of shoes she started kissing our butts.

From then on, my friend and I declared that night "rich injun" night. We went to all the hip bars and restaurants, threw our money around and had them fuss over us. Servers them right for being so classist. I apologized to my friend on behalf of my people.

Remember they (shop assistants)come from lower backgrounds so they have this idea of what a rich should look like, if you were a gringo I mean blonde, blue eyes coming with another looking gringo, she would've think different and maybe would come and help you because we have this idea in Colombia that all gringos that go to Colombia dress badly, so we let them get away with it.

Snr. Defoque I remarked on how handsome you were as a young man the other day, so I'll finish off the boost by recounting the following:

In the morning, while sitting on the crapper, I always read an essay from the comic writer David Sedaris (Time magazine declared him 'Humourist of the Year in 2001'). His style of writing puts me in mind of your posts: the humour is personal, observational and self-deprecating. You talk about sh*t and whores and f*cking donkeys; but you're never cruel and very often have a lot to say about the human condition.

My point is: I can genuinely imagine you making a go of it as a writer. Hone your skills, polish things up a bit and I can see you with an audience bigger than that provided by PBH.

Aztec, that comparison is pretty unfair. I'm volunteering my time to help Peter and Tinto to keep this forum civil; basically the cleaning lady here, not any maffia boss or president of your university. I don't wield any real power; all my decisions are based on the pre-established policy and a simple set of rules, set up by Peter the Man, any bigger clean-up jobs like canceling an account (banning) are always joint decisions.

I write a lot in this forum and 99,9% of it as a regular poster. When I'm moderating I always let you guys know, It's just like any other job; you have your job "persona" and your home "persona". The university lecturer better not continue being that at home to his own family...

Now back to Elmo Defoque;
I find this original post of yours pretty melodramatic and also very incorrect. I have never said that anybody has to be this or that to be able to participate in the threads here. Yet you make it sound like I was after your "Injun ass" and very unjustly you are making me something that I'm not. I'm not your baneman or your enemy or the boogeyman here. You want to write a thread about yourself and how you feel about your Colombianity fine, be my guest, but leave uncalled and false accusations regarding my moderation out of it.

one of my favourite musicians is Polo Montañez the cuban who was apparently unknown in cuba until discovered by a colombian who brought him to colombia where he became quite famous. Or so I was told by a cuban friend.

After that of course he became famous in cuba, so famous that many cubans have a cherished photo of him (sometimes posing with themselves) in their house.

I was in havana when Polo died, and people were crying in the streets.

Seems to me that lots of colombians like cuban music, more so than other LA countries? Shows very good taste I say. Musical tastes here in BsAs suck, IMHO.

Keep it real Elmo. I like what you have to say, and you are colombian no less than any other person posting on this site regardless of how long you have lived in the U.S.. Say what you like about colombia if thats how you feel. Say what you like about Women if thats how you feel. Do you. Alot of U.S. Americans on this site that love to talk shit about the good ole U.S.of A. That doesn't make them any less U.S. American. As far as diaspora is concerned, it's a crock because if any of you believed that crap then you would be celebrating your italian ancestry, or african, or german, or dutch, or etc. The few injuns left in the country can one day claim it but the sad fact is that most of you can't. So keep on keepin it real Elmo and your colombian badass and to hell with the rest of the pretenders on this site.

ayy, Elmo I got to know you, when your cornered, you restored to offensive remarks, which i have learn to ignored, a palabras necias oidos sordos. But I hope we will meet one day, that will be my day!!!

Miguel the similarity between Elmo and my Dad are that they both Corronchos, and they kind off have a similar background, only that my dad was not lucky enough to be taken to the USA.he had to endure a very bad childhood that today would be classified as child abuse, he got to the top alone and not much help from family or goverment. today he is great lawyer, retired and happy with not resentment torwards anything nor the untie that treated him badly. because he was abandoned as a child too, and his dad die when he was very young.

My Dad didn't sh*g burras maybe because he was good looking guy so he didn't have to restore to that. women love him even so he was poor!!. he was very charismatic.

he is a vey nice man and respectful, he is no vulgar he doesn't need to do that to gain respect.the only country he is been outside Colombia is Ecuador, I took him and he felt so lucky, his dream is to get to know France or the UK, my mum and me are working on that.

that is why a guy that was taken to the USA, has a great job there, can go anywhere in the world if he wants is not considered himself ONE OF THE LUCKIEST MEN ALIVE!!!WITH OUT RESTORTING TO TOO MUCH RUBISH

He has some great post I must admit, the one about when he was in Hotel del prado I think, it did made me laugh. it was a good post, he is a good writer and he can be very funny when he doesn't put down people or is to vulgar.

My two cents.... ...because I already see this thread being censored (oops, locked) very soon. There's a blue state/red state type of situation in play here, without question.

Elmo is 100% Colombian, whether in NYC or Barranquilla. He IS married to a 100% paisa from Poblado, for the time being anyway. His point of view, while skewed by experience, still holds a lot of weight here, as he is one of the few 100% Colombians on this site who did marry another 100% Colombian. Not a slight to anyone, just an absolute truth.

It wasn't because of LUCK that he ended up in the USA. It was because of.....dare I say, Colombian issues (cerca 1970s-1980s). These issues DIRECTLY visited upon his family. His dad got them outta there, to a "safer" place, NYC in the 19070s. LOL!!! Anyone who knows NYC in the 1970s will find the humor in that.

He will be in Barranquilla later this week, making his annual monthly pilgrimage for Carnaval. He will probably spend time with his mother and the rest of his large family, who exist up and down the "estata" system. Believe what you want about him. He fits into any setting. However, like myself, the so-called "upper-crust" is a little less comfortable than being with normal folks. No pretense, nor excuses.

The hookers and donkey stuff, while crude to some, believe it if you want. It does make for good humor, to those who understand it as only humor. It's like fart jokes. Some find it funny, some are repulsed. Oh well, such is life. Get over yourselves. It's just jokes!!!

at Colombiche - I've had the same experience as yours in a few of the mall stores. I won't get into it again on this board, as the blame the victim mentality already was imparted on you by some. And I wasn't dressed in sweats and sneakers. I got my clothes on my own, and headed to the cashier. When I pulled out the blue passport for identification at the cashier, attitudes changed. Both theirs and mine. Headed to the door after paying without acknowleding a single one of them.

There's only one Colombia in the minds of some. The one they live or lived in. Same can be said of pretty much any country. It's just hilarious to see it being played out on this board.

The only way I cold prove I was born in Colombia is stored in all places, American files. “Hope” a USA floating hospital treated my severe broken finger and they must have my real native name filed somewhere.

Esanch, if you're under 26yo.... then your timeline is about right, if you are older than 26 and applying for a cedula for the first time, it will take about 2 years due to the fact that they have to make what they call a "technical investigation", to see if you've had a cedula already issued in another name or if there any legal matters pending against you.
