Nominate Best PBH Contributors from Present to Past

Over time there have been countless golden nuggets of advice by our fellow PBH'ers.

Nominate someone where one could follow their comments and/or posts and learn much about Colombia, it's people and culture.

I nominate Bill Turley amongst many that offer excellent advice...and is seldom snide...thanks Bill et. all!

It's really difficult to single out best contributors because like kat said, many good contributors specialize: juancegomez war and politics, as political analyst, Sr. Tertius the same; neither one is posting right now. Tinto is our Money Man, *Loid our conspiracy specialist, La-Huella The King of Controversy, Douglas (dwmte7 el Rey del Recuerdo and the Universal Soul of Love and Harmony With Your Fellow Being), Kat1 is our Ms. Congeniality (with HoustonGal as the First Runner Up), the list is a never ending story, because our people come and go; the panorama changes all the time, new posters with redeemable qualities join us replacing good, solid posters that have left us...and who will return perhaps wearing another face. Even a troll or two has evolutioned into a respectable and well-behaved poster and good , informative posters have gone sour on us. C'est la vie.

I'm not really that much into polls myself, but I think this thread serves its purpose as we are trying to figure out WHY some people are considered "good contributors" and what does it take to be reccognized as such. No forum is better than the sum of the qualities and merits of the people that contribute to it and I'm dedicated to make this forum one of the best discussion forum about Colombia that exists.

A few years back women were few and continuously attacked by disgruntled male members of the forum, especially middle-aged gringos (of any nationality) traveling to Colombia on post order bride type of business. It was all "my chica is sizzlin' hot" and "gringas are all fat ass monsters" and we really did have to get rid of that neanderthal type of talk and raise the standards of PBH. I'm so glad that Peter finally put his foot down and made it known that this is a TRAVEL forum, not ISG or Goodwife.com.

Hey, let's not forget the number one best contributor of us all, Peter, the Man:))) Makes great contributions, especially in the travel guides and yo man, check out this new feature!

one of his original names was Medoblado and some of us still call him that.

I personally have never found anything wrong with Medo's posts or comments. In fact, a lot of what he says is insiteful and on target. Isn't this site about voicing your opinion on topics? Why would one persons opinion be a deletable offense yet anothers is not? Desi1 says she has a job to do...........what is that job.....Censorship? I think that Desi1 is making it personal and is trying to have it both ways. For example, I have read many of Medo's posts which were really good with lots of beneficial comments from many members here, yet it is deleted in the morning when Medo's account is deleted. So, what that tells me is that Desi1 is targeting him personally and not what is posted. Sounds pretty personal to me.

I for one don't need anyone to protect me or tell me what I should read. I can make that decision for myself, thank you.

Hi Gringoloid. Nice to meet you. Sorry for my delayed reply, I was feeding the goldfish.

Well, good question. Thanks for asking.

I would suggest that the Moderators of this website take the approach of Tinto, Kat1, and Peter, and adopt that strategy when it comes to moderating the site.

How do they moderate? The look at each individual post, each individual comment, and decide what to delete from that stand point.

The strategy of deletion by reputation, or personal hate, is far too unfair in a 2009 civilized world. However, the most popular section of this website is a 3'rd World country, so there you go.

The members of this site do not need to be protected or have the information which they seek to be censored. I kinda think that the members here have a way of voicing their opinion if something is posted which doesn't cut the mustard. We dont' need to be protected because, as in the case we have here now, the protectors have turned into the ones we need to be protected from.

Allow democracy to happen and you will see wonderful new things blossom. Continue in a dictatorship fashion and you have Russia 1950's atmosphere. Great for those who rule but the citizens are the ones who pay the price.

Power is a very addicting thing. Some can't handle it.

Yes, when we use our power and influence to fashion the world around us, we are in a sense playing God.

Building an empire in which dutiful lieutenants stand at your beck and call to execute your every wish makes exciting drama.

What do you suggest as a solution, ..revolution? Boycott?

renalda says on Nov 14, 2008, 17:15:

I rarely come on PBH so no matter to me.

I think your question though is more for Medo.

If I were him (or her), I'd say............Medo likes how things are exactly as they are now! Wouldn't change anything.

He has the best of both worlds. He is an older established member under a different name for any posts or comments he is serious about. He is also the newbie who can throw out to the members observations which should be asked but because people are afraid they don't. Medo is the Bill O'Reily of PBH. He asks the tough questions and holds people to a higher standard. He is the few here on PBH who are not blowing smoke up everyones ass. He accepts if he is wrong and gives everyone the opportunity to answer and explain their position of what they say.

Is exploring what the real truth is a bad thing? In a hostile, mean way it is. But Medo, to me, doesn't seem to cross into the mean category. He calls it how it is. Take or leave it. Don't click on it if you don't agree.

So, no changes needed in the website. Its is a good world on PBH.

Mongo says on Nov 14, 2008, 20:31:

Although I'm relatively new here, I've formed some opinions of posters already. What an intelligent well-traveled group of people. Thay all have their specific areas of brilliance though.

Here's my list:

Peter - puts up with all us crazies without a complaint. Infinite patience.

Desi - See above. Also, she listens to what you say and responds fairly (to me anyway).

Kat1 - She's a knockout and she has traveled Colombia extensively. Has bicultural knowledge.

Tinto - My favorite mod. Posts the truth and only the truth.

Aztec - I like his political views and from what I have seen, he posts them in an un-obtuse manner.

Babygirl - Another knockout who brought much needed beauty to my friend page. Always friendly.

Morphus - Knows a lot about Colombia. Sometimes his comments are absolutely hilarious.

Bufalo - Knows more about Armenia than just about anyone here. Makes incredible movies. Nice guy.

LDW - Extremely educated and sharp. Says what he wants to say, even if its not politically correct. Knows what he's talking about.

Tomtom33 - Knows a lot about Colombian women. He's lived, and is living the dream.

CanadaMan - Loves his wife. Is grateful for what he has. My first friend on PBH.

Simon - His devotion to Colombia is to be admired. Although many may not agree with him, he tells it like he sees it.

Huskie - Probably the most well -traveled member of PBH. Always nice to me.

Strata2Woman - She's nice to those she wants to be nice too. She does not follow the herd. Thanks again for the link to the legal terms!

BillyB - My favorite political contributer. A great debater who seldom loses a debate.

NBenjamin - Stood up for himself. Not sure if he is what he says he is, but I like him nonetheless. I hope to hear more from him in the future.

Goin_South - Most prolific poster on PBH. Always friendly, funny, and doesn't take life too seriously. Will take on 5 liberals at a time by himself.

Kalder - The most intelligent poster on PBH, in my opinion. I wonder if he went to Cambridge or Oxford? Extremely witty and has an excellent handle on history. I always look forward to his posts.

Monita Linda - One of my favorites. She tells it like it is. She never sugarcoats. I like strong women, what can I say?

Houstongal - Nice, pretty, and travels all the time. What more could a man want in a woman?

dwmte7 - The conscience of PBH. Also the peacemaker. And probably the most Colombian experience of any non-native Colombian. Has the most incredible life experiences and should write a book about them. I'm still waiting for the day when he gets an avatar.

MaFe - Sweet and kind. I love her Mitchener and Twain quotes.

Tasco66 - One of the pillars of the off-topic section. He loves Fox News and takes the time to stand behind what he posts. He will debate to the end, but will listen to his opposition.

Britabroad - One of my newest friends, although he hasn't added me..lol. Logical, knowledgeable, and insightful.

mcheasley - He's doing what I want to do, but before me. He's very generous in sharing his knowledge with me. He's such a nice guy, that he called me even after I forgot to call him back. If anyone can make it in Colombia, it will be him. He's extremely resourceful and has a lot of energy.

Darloup - Proves that French people can be great. Super nice guy with a beautiful Colombian wife. Another one who's living the dream.

Rowdy Yates - I enjoyed his posts, but where did he go?

Corporalgator - If he posts something, you'd better believe he knows what he's talking about. I learned alot from his post about the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd worlds. Great photo.

codyintl - Nice guy who doesn't think that everything is ingrained in stone. Seems to see the world honestly for what it is, not as black and white. Has lived all over the world, so although he's young, he has some great insights.

Gator - Has knowledge of Colombia that is astounding. Can answer most of the specific visa-type questions. If he says something, it is almost certainly true. I would trust what he says before almost anyone else on this site.

Ujay - Knowledgeable and charitable. Has more day-to-day knowledge of Bogota than just about anyone. Very generous as well, and has a great sense of humor. I had fun arguing with him when I first got here.

Jonas - Funny and logical. Very smart guy who's spelling and grammer is amazing, especially when you consider that English is not his first language.

PapiChulo - Has a great memory for things that have been said on PBH. Doesn't seem to take life too seriously.

TobyBoy - Knows a lot about history. I'm was a history major and I learn from him. He's very civil and fair if you are with him. He forgave my antics, and for that, I am grateful.

La huella - says all kinds of things but can usually back them up with cohesive arguments and sources. Thanks again for the source, it was very interesting!

Pobrecita - He's fun to make angry. Sorry, but its true. He's loyal to Miamimike and Sloop, though.

Sloopskipper - A good debater who doesn't get angry easily. You gotta admire a guy who can sail.

Miamimike - Knows a lot about Miami, which is like a third country somewhere in between the US and Colombia....lol. He's very loyal to his political convictions, which is to be admired.

Lcacquie - He knows a lot about politics and I've learned a lot from him. Doesn't take things too personally. Puts a lot of time and effort into his posts.

Gringoloid - A well-rounded poster who can contribute to almost anything. He seems to prefer the financial type posts, but he's so intelligent that he can contribute anywhere. I've learned more about conspiracy theories from him than I ever knew before.

mononoke28 - A very honest poster who develops her theories from real-life experiences. Doesn't get rattled easily, and backs up her points concisely.

Robert Jorge - Always positive and has a lot of knowledge about women and life in general. I can't believe I haven't added him as a friend yet.

Paisa29 - What can you say about a poster who goes in person to check out a business for another poster? First-rate all the way. This is what PBH is about.

Azunoman - He's steady, like a rock, in his contributions. He's often around and contributing to the "useful" threads.

El torcido - Always funny, and has a great avatar.

Bill Turley - Everybodys idea of the perfect gringo. He's living the dream and willing to encourage others to do the same. Has the only dog on PBH who could kick my dogs butt.

Medo, Flounder pounder, voltage, etc. - Makes the late nights entertaining. His insults to me often make me laugh.

Tengo flip hole 5 - Smarter than he appears at first glance. Has contributed quite a bit lately and usually doesn't get offended when people gang up on him.

Manlred - Well read, well traveled, well educated. Has insights into several cultures.

Elmodefoque - Always outrageous, and always funny. Doesn't take life at all seriously. Can get away with stuff on PBH that others could only dream of getting away with.

ColombianGringo - Knowledgeable on Colombia and the world as a whole. His posts are always contributions.

casa_de_norte - Will stick to a thread and debate you like a pitbull. When he's wrong, he will admit it. Loves, honors, and cherishes his wife, which is to be highly admired.

Mongo - Mongo like candy.

There are many others that I can't think of right now. Maybe I'll post those impressions later. There are also several others who were here before me, so I know nothing about them.
Anyway, these are just my personal views so don't debate me on their merits.

I thought I'd covered most of the people I knew about on PBH last night, but since I've read a few threads today, I feel kinda bad for forgetting so many great people.

How could I have forgotten Vicshere, Byron_Koster, Sonny, Lisa Zee, Frank Rizzo, Webmanco, Dolfi, Romy, Utopia Cowboy, PBHjon, pedro, Johnny2008, and so many others. If I wind up staying home tonight again, then maybe I'll make an additional list.

mongo.......tell us a little more about your situation; are you planning on living in colombia? and if so, where?

0 funny, 0 helpful.

Mongo says on Nov 15, 2008, 14:02:

Gringoloid, on this coming up trip I'm only visiting for about 6 weeks. I'm hoping to return a couple of months later to live there for good.

My novia lives in Armenia and is a lawyer, so I will be living somewhere there in Quindio. Both her and I like the countryside, so its my dream to own a little finca. My dog could run around, and I could have chickens to wake me up in the morning.

I have what I think is a great idea for a business, but I will not share it with anyone - I'm sure you understand why. When and if I get it up and running, I'm sure I'll get into trouble for trying to promote it here on PBH!

That's the plan anyway. It probably won't work out exactly like that, but I hope it can turn out close enough that I can be relatively happy. The rat-race here in the US has worn me out. I can't see living the rest of my life this way....its too short.

Oh, and my novia comes first. I love Colombia because of her, not her because of Colombia. I say this because its easy for people to fall in love with a place and get confused. I know that Colombia is not all roses and coffee, so I feel that I am being realistic about my intentions. I put this part in because I have been slowly cultivating this dream for many years, and have tried to study it from every possible angle.

Hope that answers your question Gringoloid, and thanks for your interest.

Mongo says on Nov 15, 2008, 14:29:

Ah, well I can't provide all the details. I can't keep hijacking this thread.

No, I didn't find her on the internet, no I didn't find her at a "foreign bride" agency (not that there's anything wrong with that), and no, she was never a prepago....hahaha!

Actually, she's a very good person, who has lived somewhat of a "sheltered" life, in that she has spent most of her life studying and making good grades. I saw her, talked to her, and slowly we became friends. Then after a long period as friends, we became a couple. Pretty boring story actually. She did teach me spanish though, however exciting that is.

Okay, no more thread hijacking!

I was born in Colombia but left over 35 years ago and my roots are calling me back, as far as my husband, he loves Colombia very much as well, he was born and raised in the US, a true Gringo. (that is a joke)

Why is that, Liza? Why don't you come to grips with reality.... the internet and it"s illusions... ARE reality... jejejje..

The internet and it's position as a meeting place is just as real and credible and you can get to know a person EVEN BETTER on the internet , than you might do so in real life.
