No Uribe in 2014...

Colombia's Uribe hits snag in re-election effort

BOGOTA (Reuters) - The surprise failure this week of a bill in Colombia's Congress aimed at allowing President Alvaro Uribe a third term revealed fractures in his coalition that could doom his chances of being re-elected.

The measure, voted down on Wednesday, would have allowed the popular Uribe to run for office again in 2014, after sitting out four years from 2010 when his current term ends.

Though there remains a possibility that re-election for 2010 will be approved, it is diminishing.

I wonder what is breaking apart the coalition that seemed to have such a strong grip? anybody have any insights?

I don't think he will seek re-election. It would be too contreversial and maybe open a Pandora's Box. I think by now Uribe and most of the country realises that the FARC, although still dangerous, are too much diminished to pose a threat to the domacracy and most now feel that a worthy, or anybody else that wants to be his succesor, will need to keep the heavy hand against ALL the criminals operating in Colombia, while being able to spend more money on the social needs of the country now that the FARC, who some suppose are fighting for the poor, are not syphoning that money to fight them, or repair the infrastructure damage they cause the country, or just stealing it from either corrupt, or intimidated local governaments (BTW, the same goes for the paras)..

remember I am the simple guy who doesn't get too hung up over the specifics.

Uribe is a bad ass who God obviously ( if you believe in such a thing ) put in position for a time like this. He gets high marks from me on his intellegience, his articulation, and his ability to connect with others particularly his people.

I am also greatful that him and Bush shared the relationship they had at a time when it was so necessary to support Colombia.

Having said that, I am so opposed with him staying in office more then two terms. Power breeds corruption in virtually all people. He will be absolutely one of the greatest presidents if he does not stay long enough to destroy the good work he has accomplished.

The pendulum has to swing both ways. The human rights infringements and the tight money controls have to be relaxed at somepoint. But how else were you going to deal with 2700 kidnappings a year, bombings and other security issues.

Just my thoughts

Like many relations in Colombia (or in any country with coalitions), they last as long as convenient. Both the Conservative Party as Cambio Radical will try to have a go at the presidency as soon as they have the idea Uribe's a lame duck. The coalition was strong as long as that virtual strength was convenient and in the interest of the parties. It may now be more convenient to discredit Uribe further and weaken coalition parties like De La U. giving Conservador or Cambio Radical an actual chance competing Partido Liberal or Polo Democratico.

Cambio Radical is not supporting Uribe because Vargas Lleras has had enough of Uribe. The man was convinced he was going to be the president of Colombia by 2006, and then Uribe decided to run again, and now that Uribe has decided to pass the torch on to Juan Manuel Santos, you can imagine how pissed CR is. The women in Partido de la U are completely against it, Gina Parody has said she will quit and leave the country if Uribe decides to run again. Apparently Mr Dashing made a lot of promises he could not keep in order to stay in power.

What i am concerned with is how quiet the USa is about Uribe seeking another term even if it is in 2014. The USA was very vocal when Chavez did the same thing.

What is the word I am thinking of?

Smile if you are a thinker!
