My mother-in-law had been counting on one of the politicians that she helped elect to get her daughter a government job. I asked my wife yesterday what was going on with this. She said that there was no chance of a job through this route. It seems that the senator involved has been caught up in the AUC scandal and has his hands full trying to save his own ass. So no job for her. My mother-in-law's pissed needless to say. She does have a few other irons in the fire though, one in city government in Monteria and a few others in Bogota.

Do it respectably, while maintaining the dignity of others,(it's what the politicians don't do), and at the end, I imagine you'll feel pretty good about your life. With the interest rates still low and the facility of acquiring a home with as little as 5 million pesos down these projects are extremely popular. That's the fastest growing sector in the real estate market in Cali at this moment. That much about your theory. A fronte praecipitium a tergo lupi 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

vicshere says on Feb 21, 2007, 05:38: these homes your talking about...you really think they are for the real poor.....no way let me tell you those homes are bought by people who have money......and many times a person without a job for example will buy a house for some one with money....the guy will live in the house free until the real owner can sell the house and double up....by the way you can only apply once in a lifetime to buy a government assisted house......so once you name is used your out of luck next time....here's an example...... about 3 years ago there was a big flood in Giron and many people lost their homes......these government programs promised to build them new homes ....guess what they all are still living in their make shift tin can homes just up from the river.....the government did build some homes but I don't see those people moving out of the tin cans.....hummm wonder what is up with that.....I want to see real programs for the poor....because every day I see real poor people eating out of garbage cans...real people going through my garbage looking for scrapes of food... real people living on the side walk everywhere....I see what looks like very intelligent people selling gum to drivers...I see children selling everything everywhere.....I see kids selling their body so they can live......I see the real old man who sleeps at the stop light and raises his hand up so people can drop money in his hand......I see disabled people everywhere asking for money....man I see shit like this every day....so don't tell me the government has programs to help the poor....you guys don't even live here you don't get to see the real Colombia ...come you guys wake up.....again I repeat the government has programs to help themselves and the rich....the poor can eat shit

JMCana says on Feb 21, 2007, 07:02: Action and Enforcement I have read many good laws and help for Colombian citizens. You can go around the country and see many of them working well. But you hit areas where indeed they are not working well. The reason could be corruption or interpretations by the local official. The problem is that all too often the local official is the almighty in his area and there is lack of enforcement of the law by state and national officials.

Mr. Hollywood says on Feb 21, 2007, 09:00: One other point On the subject of the government assistance to the poor in Colombia. It does exist and it does actually help some people, but it's also worth noting how BAD the magnitude of poverty is in Colombia. Let's just use a fairly conservative estimate of 2 million people displaced by the conflict over the last 10 years. That's more than 5% of the entire population of the country having essentially lost their homes and livelyhoods. And that's just the desplazados, not the 50% of people living below the poverty line.
