No Nobel Prize For Betancourt

The former president of Finland, Martti Ahtisaari has been awarded this year's Nobel Peace prize. The Oslo Peace Prize Committee has been fairly consistent in dealing out the prize for people who have worked hard as mediators or peace negotiators and Mr. Ahtisaari certainly qualifies for the Prize.

The 2008 Nobel Peace Prize
The Nobel Peace Prize goes to Martti Ahtisaari "for his important efforts, on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts".

Perhaps next year, Ingrid!

Yes, perhaps, and perhaps by next year she would have also done something to deserve it like Mr. Ahtisaari.

That's not right giving it to him ,just because they felt sorry the country has no money ,and the UK has froze all the assets so it can get money back.if hes Nobel then he will give the 1.3 million to help his country's debt.

OK, I'll admit my ignorance. What has Ingrid done that would cause her to be considered to be deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize? I'm being honest here - I really don't know.

Or are you just mentioning Betancourt's name in the title to keep this in Friendly Talkzone?

I agree that Ingrid may not have had enough merits (yet) for peace keeping to deserve the Prize. Why Ingrid? She was one of the three top candidates for the Prize.

Ahtisaari has worked long and hard for peace, with some spectacular success (Namibia, Aceh), some disappointments (Kosovo) and is involved in a peace plan for Irak at this time.

The original purpose of Nobel Peace prize was to award persons who have struggled to maintain PEACE, to put an end to WARS, negotiate sustainable agreements between WARRING factions. Neither Uribe nor GWB or Putin qualify; they are all men of war.

Alfred Nobel was a Swedish scientist and inventor (he invented the dynamite). When he found out that his discovery was going to be used for killing other human beings instead of just peaceful purposes, he willed all his enormous fortune to his foundation to deal out these awards, not just in science, economy and literature, but also to promote peace in the world.

Right. And under those qualifications, Ingrid is pretty far from qualifying. Actually, she's far from qualifying to tie her own shoes by the looks of it.

Peter please allow us "italic", "BOLD" and "blockquote" tags please. You already have a filter and allow Embed and IMG - just remmeber to and add closing tags of all three of those automatically to the ends of every single post - right where you write out the "funny helpful" in order to stop whole threads from being bold, etc...

here is the poor man's method of quoting: quotation marks combined with copy and paste. let me demonstrate this sophisticated technique:

"Alfred Nobel was a Swedish scientist"

Look at me, I'm quoting Desi1 right now!!!!!!!

Desi1 (Moderator) (Trustee board) says on Oct 11, 2008, 00:59:

You can develop this sophisticated technique even further and say: "Alfred Nobel was a Swedish scientist" (Desi1)

Now there can't be any doubt about who said what.

We have been doing that and people are still confused. Miami Mike is even using ============ to seperate the quote from the comment and he even includes that timestamp stuff and readers here still think he wrote everything.
