No need to cancel properly in colombia?

Hey, another question about colombian women and the culture.

I recently met a sort of dream girl, and we got on really well. We had made plans on a thursday night, and then she just ended up in a meditation class or something and obviously couldn't get to her phone. Then we ended up hanging out on Friday night with a big group. When we were walking in the street she put her hand on my arm, and basically there was alot of chemistry in general. Now the next night(sat) we were going to go salsa dancing(her plan) and go to her meditation class(her invite). Then saturday came up, we talked on the phone, and she told me to call her at eight, that was the last time I talked to her, she didn't answer her phone the rest of the night, didn't text, and didn't respond to my nice email wondering what was going on. For me, the most dissapointing part was just the fact of how many other things I missed waiting for this girl.

Extra info: She is leaving to the states to study in a week.

Question: For americans, this behavior would be unreliable and flaky, but I am just trying to put it in more of a cultural perspective. I have lived here for 9 months and I would generally say that colombians prefer gossiping behind peoples backs instead of saying things. This could be an extension of this. Maybe on friday she really didn't feel like rejecting me or something and she just kept stringing it along? Or maybe she was into me and just changed her mind? With all your experiences is it just normal to reject people this way, just change your mind and ignore them. That is what many friends have told me, that its just the way they change their minds here, and they see it as more polite not to call or answer calls, just wait til the other person gets the hint. After 9 months here, this is really the first time I have seen this. has anyone else seen it?

Kyle

Really I have not seen that if they know your calling..at a certain time..

You know in a way Colombians do live minute by minute many do..Still Rude..

You should had screwed her up first night instead of playing the gay gentleman!
...
Just joking Ken... forget her and don't call her anymore, she'll call you back or you did not have a chance anyway.

Touching your arm means nothing in Colombia. If there was really a lot of chemistry she would have been practically laying on you. hehehe !!!

If the woman was really interested in you she would have been waiting by the phone for your call just like women from every other country in the world.

I'd say that behaviour is selfish and inconsiderate by Colombian standards.

Most likely explanation is she got a better offer so she left you hanging. Especially if she is going travelling soon, she might be getting more calls than usual from friends, acquaintances etc wanting to do something... someone called her and persuaded her to do something else.

An alternative explanation (and I am speaking in generalities here, not about your particular situation), is the girl was looking for something else out of the Friday date and it didn't materialise.

For example, you may have just wanted a date to get to know her better. She may have wanted a cash gift as a one-shot prepago arrangement, or an introduction to someone you know, or to go to a particular place, who knows what her motivation was. This probably doesn't apply to you because she agreed to reasonably detailed plans to go out the following night.

That behavior is not acceptable, generally speaking, in Colombia.

I am afraid there was no chemistry and, from reading your post, you never went on a "date."
To cut to the chase-she doesn't like you. Sorry but they are like Kleenex . Use one, throw it away and another has popped up for use.

From my experience and others there, that same thing happened a few times. They are so into avoiding any direct confrontation, and are always so polite, that they will just disappear like that. It means they are no longer, even if they once were, interested, and it means let it go.

Ok, Kyle... I don't know why people here don't tell the truth. What happened to you is very typical in Colombia: she has a novio, she could not arrange anything to be free that night and went out with him, so she just left her mobile home because she knew that you were going to call. This is the explanation, verify this if you can and come back to tell us. Forget about friends, family, politeness, chemistry... you can bet on it: it was her NOVIO!

Hey TampaV--I have observed this Behavior In Miami also with Colombians. That behavior is hard to figure out, strange! I've seen where you make plans on a Monday and when Saturday comes, many times something invariably pops up where they either cannot make it or they are late or they simply have made another plan and never took your plan seriously to began with. Usually its the former, without a Phone call ect. With Americans or Canucks, when we make a plan we don't have to call the day of the event to confirm it. You only hear from us if we have to cancel for some "Act of God" reason otherwise the plan stands, whether we call 2-3 times during the week or not. We usually give a Phone call as a courtesy if we must cancel,,,

Kyle, I'd listen to what GIB and Robi are saying.

The other thing you have to learn is in Colombia you HAVE to have a Plan B and Plan C except maybe on first dates. Colombianas are usually pretty good about first meetings but otherwise you should have some backup. Remember you can play the same game too and cancel at the last minute. Since no colombiana is ever going to feel guilty about doing that to you. . . well, it cuts both ways. :-)

Also you seem to be suffering from a case of "one-itis" if you know what I mean. You need to get over that ASAP. Putting all your hopes in a woman you haven't even kissed only works in romantic Hollywood movies; in real life, it only leads to frustration and failure. Think about it from the woman's perspective: she's keeping her options open too.

I'm actually surprised by your question since you've already spent 9 months there, you should have figured out some of this stuff by now.

For my upcoming Bogota trip, I've got 14 phone numbers accumulated so far from using the cybercupid sites and MSN and I'm still trying to get more. I'm NOT trying to boast here! In reality, probably only one or two of these will pan out and will be worth my valuable time.

Colombia can be fun, like shooting fish in a barrel. But the water is dirty, so you have to keep shooting, and don't get too choosy about the fish. . . ;-))

And let us put things in the right perspective, Paisa...
The guy, Kyle, wanted to screw her. The girl seemed to follow him on his plan, but, apparently with no reason, did not respond to his calls. Kyle is asking if it is normal in Colombia to not cancel...
So, anyone with a little experience with Colombianas could answer that she has a boyfriend.
What's wrong with that? I've seen it hundreds of times and for me it is the most likely reason.
Did Kyle wanted to marry her? Hell no, first of all he wanted to screw her... he can say that he was honest, honest in what? Hello? He wanted to jump in her panties!

So, no Kyle, forget everything, we can't judge, and she was probably at the hospital visiting her sick mother. Better like this?

Ja! I hope they read this then.

"Forgot to add this. . . but I've been told a couple of very amusing anecdotes regarding just this type of situation. :-))"

Really? Keep them to yourself! ]

Just wanted to respond to this:

Mona, I can understand your feminine feelings about this but think this through. I'm absolutely certain that while I'm chatting online with these ladies, they are ALSO chatting with several male suitors at the same time. Who knows, there might even be other gringos chatting them up, or an ex-boyfriend who's looking to reignite something.

It cuts both ways you know. So do you think it's okay for a woman to enjoy the attentions of several suitors. . . but a man can only focus his energies on one woman at a time?

Sorry but I can't buy that anymore. Maybe it's not politically correct, but like I said above, that's a recipe for frustration. Casi in point: Kyle's post!

I'm talking about dating here by the way, not relationships. If I was in a relationship, I would only be focused on her, and I would expect the same of course.

In conclusion: I absolutely respect and understand a woman's RIGHT to keep her options open, and to find and attract the best man possible out of the widest pool possible. I don't have a problem with that! :-)

Likewise, my rational mature response to this is to "hedge" my bets during the early phase of the dating ritual and keep my options open as well. Otherwise, I'm going to end up being played for a fool.

I understand most women don't like to hear this (which is why I usually don't mention it) but I think it's a double standard on their part. It's okay if they do it, but not the guys. :-)

As for the anecdotes, I will keep them to myself because I'm usually not big on relating gossip or hearsay. I just wanted this Kyle kid to realize there's a lot of monkey business going on down there, more than in the states, at least from my perspective. . . and he should take that into account when he makes a decision on how to deal with these dating issues.

I have also found it's not just dealing women and dating. Doing business with colombian men and women I find most will never say no. Yes we can do that. You get your true answer when they dont show or they dont do as they say they will. A delayed no!!! is what we should call it. I go so far as to offer ways out of a deal looking for a true answer. But still here comes a yes to a deal only to be followed up by the dreaded delayed no!!!! Not in words of course just by not showing up or not doing what is promised. Then they have that stupid look on thre mug like they dont know what your talking about when you confront them later. Dont get me wrong every race has this type person withn it but more so with the colombians I have delt with. Damn Colombians if they did not know how to have so much fun and party like theres no tomorrow I would not deal with themso much. Oh and there's that whole great music thing too!!!!

I went out for lunch with this guy and he said i should come clubbing with him and his friends that night and I said okay. He said he would call, girls never call...we dont wanna look desperate. But it happens that I usually throw my bag on the car's floor and my mobile phone must have slipped out...so i got home, got changed and waited for this guys call...never happened. Then after I got angry and all I went to check my purse and my mobile wasnt there...found it in the car like 2 days after. I called the guy as soon as I could but he was like "yeah, whatever..." I felt soooooo bad.
