No Luggage and DAS ..Problem?

On this trip to Colombia I am not planning on carrying any luggage (carry on or otherwise). I plan on buying and keeping clothing and personal articles at the house of my fiance. (many trips planned this year!). Is this going to raise red flags with customs? What should i anticipate? Thanks!!

Brave I think it might raise eyebrows going in, (unless you lie and say you already have clothes and personal effects in Colombia). Then again I guess the airline people might be the only ones that know when you check-in with nothing.

On the way out, I believe you most likely will be examined (they like to choose younger women travelling alone). If they suspect anything awry you may be whisked away for a check that could make you miss your flight.

In my experience most regular travellers at least carry-on some extra water, a book and a change of underwear or clothes - ie. in case connections go haywire and they end up spending a night somewhere enroute.

I also say it is brave becuase you must have 100% confidence that you will find the right nightclothes, an outfit you love, underwear that fits right, toilettries you like, and makeup the right shade on one shopping trip the very day you step off of the plane.

So I guess the jist of my post is to suggest at least taking some stuff, not just for the airport people, but for your own peace of mind.

I know it is sooo tempting to just go (sans luggage), but Colombia probably isn't the best destination to try it out on.

You will not have any problem.

If you are travelling FROM the US... ... then boarding a plane without any luggage raises a red flag, just as buying the ticket last minute or with cash would. Only the airline will know? Well, that might have been true pre-9/11. Now they are required to pass such things on to the TSA. That the resulting searches are completely random is a necessary fiction. You WILL be searched very thouroughly, at least on the American side, who WILL pass on the warning to their Colombian counterparts.

I don't pretend to know what the Colombians will do; sometimes their security is tight, and I'm impressed with their professionalism. Sometimes, you think you're in a typically screwed up banana republic where anything goes.

I once got yanked from a line and X-rayed in Bogota: I was travelling light, last minute, and I fit somebody's profile of a mule. Meanwhile, I used to skip customs every time I entered Colombia by flying to Cartagena via Bogota: the luggage passed to the domestic flight automatically, and nobody at DIAN ever had any interest in it once it got to CTG.

But even if they take notice of you ... it doesn't really matter if you've got nothing to hide, does it? Just make sure you hit every wicket on your journey early so that you don't miss a connection.

Best of luck.

No luggage I think the airlines leaving the US might get worried but DAS will give you no problem. First of all DAS only checks your passport, is is Customs (DIAN) which will be looking at your luggage, but since there are plenty of business people who come in for the day and leave (from neighboring countries) I doubt they will even care.
