There are two daily nonstop flights from Houston to Colombia. How come you're not on one of them? Why is it that Colombians have such a problem with Mexicans? Do they have bigger dicks or what?

why would you want Tex-Col? Food? that food would absolutely suck.
One or the other. You got Tex-Mex, because of the obvious; they are adjacent geographically. Plus, it even f at *king rhymes. jeje. It's an easy blend, from there, culturally speaking.

Utc, they got the problem, because just about all other hispanics put the Mexicans at the bottom of the totem poll. So, it's one place the Colombians can join in, with everyone else behind them, and put the Mexicans down.
I have never figured this out. What's up? (I don't care for the Mexican culture so much, as well? Why is that?) It is like 'country-western' music; certain conditions have to exist, for me to be able to tolerate listening. Same things for 'things Mexican'. How did we all arrive at this perspective?

What time does the other flight leave? (It's not daily anymore...only three or four days a week, from Houston to Cali, on Continental.)

Ciao! Gustav.

You are telling your kids from Colombia that they are nobody here, in your neighborhood, because they are a minority in your city so they have to change their culture and become one under the umbrella of the largest ethnic group?
Well, there are other ethnic groups that Do Not follow your example, for example, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and Peruvians and of course there are other groups in San Antonio, Texas.

Monpirri makes a point but...... What monpirri forgot to mention is that if you add up all of PRs, cubans Peruvians, and of course Colombians together, they don't even come close to the number of Mexicans here. In fact, there are so many Mexicans here, that if you add up all the other non Mexican Latinos, the sum still would not equal the number of Mexicans.

Now Gelacito, let's look at your comment. (which is also at or near the bottom of the totem poll)

"because just about all other hispanics put the Mexicans at the bottom of the totem poll"

I have never heard any educated and/or civil minded Latino refer to Mexicans in that manner. Why should any Lationo think that their culture is better than anothers'? Can you explain that to me. I'll put it to you another way. Every advancement, that Latinos have made in this country, whether it be matters related to bilingual education programs, employment, or civil rights that have included one's ethnicity as a protected interest, has been made because of the MEXICAN population in this country. Colombian's, as well as every other Latino group living here, have benefited from their efforts. Yet they walk around this country like a bunch of fools complaining about a group of people whose very presense they have benefited from.

Did you ever hear of MALDEF? If you haven't you may want to Google them and see all the terrific work they have done for the Latino Community as a whole. Find me a Colombian, PR, Cuban or any other Lation group that has worked as hard as they have.

Even today, with immigration reform looming on the horizon, do you think congress would be debating the issue because of the handfull of illegal Colombians here? Once again, if and when some form of amnesty or earned amnesty becomes a reality here, it will have been because of the MEXICANS, both legal and illegal ones that brought that change to fruition.

You people just never quit with your racist crap. What are your problems? Inferiority complex....or something? Grow up and think intelliegently for a change

The only problem is you can't find that size to easily. Many stores stop at 29, and rarely do you see a 29.5. You will hardly ever,,,,if ever find a 30. All 5 feet 8 inches of me feels like a giant when I go to Mexico. Here in the US, I am average height or less.

I think it has something to do with being "number one". I remember when McDonalds (I'm that old) had become the unequivocal hamburger giant, everyone found every reason in the world to attack these guys for being so sucessfull. Today, and for the last couple of years, Walmart is the one to hate. They get attacked for everything under the sun. And yet, they don't do anything that other companies don't do. Yet, while "Big Box" companies have come and gone, they have grown around the world like no other company in the history of the US. Still, it took over 10 years for them to finally win in their Public Relations campaign to convince them to allow them to open one store in the City of Chicago.

This comment is a typical gringo comment, no disrespect intended. A mexican and puerto rican absolutely have nothing in common besides both of them speak spanish which is very very different. I mean just because all of them speak the same language doesn't mean they are the same. There is no such thing as "Latino" the roman empire doesn't exist anymore. It's like saying brits, canucks, american, jamaicans, indians, english speaking africans should hang together. When people refer to me as latino I kindly tell them I don't speak latin.

Sure there are less cubans than Mexicans, but they have higher educational levels, per capita income and a heck of a lot more political power as well.
In Canada it is actually colombians who own most latino businesses and influence the local latin media the most. I don't think we are the most numerous though, I think there are more Ecuadoreans, Salvadoreans and Chileans than Colombians, we just happen to have las pilas puestas.

Ok half right , cubans didnt "cheat" they abuse the system just like Mexicans do. The difference is instead of bringing tacos puercos, broken indian spanish that doesn't make sense. Most Cubans go to school, and have done a great job at starting many businesses. Read the story on the CEO of Coke, a cuban national that came to this country with a dollar in his pocket. Bro, get yourself a copy of Hispanic Business and you will see most successful business owners are made up of many Latin American nationalities other than Mexican. I am not saying they are bad people, just not as succesful. Why? Who knows maybe they should spend less time having 10+ kids and watching soap operas and more attention to education.

I agree that cubans abuse the system to their benefit. I congratulate them for that. But, you can't compare them rest of immigrants coming from latin america. Many other immigrants start from -10 and build from there. Anyway, I am aware that other hispanics have made strides. BTW, alot of us are blaming the victims..the indio mejicanos..unfortunately, their government doesn't care about them and are exploiting them. They love that remesa money coming back to mejico but careless about the social status in mejico. I have mexicans at my job here. Different group and most are still living in mejico and are here on contracts. They have money..they shop at Short Hills Mall very expensive and dine in the finest places..Believe these mejicans don't look nothing like the mejicanos struggling to survive here, trying to help their family back home. I few of them speak french and italian.. I thought they were from Europe..

Anyway, I am from Brazil..well parents are from there.. and I do not like people identifying me as latino..it doesn't define me nor my culture..should we throw in french, italians, haitians, and the french, portuguese, spanish speaking africans in this latino category.. I admit for marketing purposes it is a great strategy but let's get real..Latino isn't an ethnic group nor a race..

Yes, that's right That was Porfirio Diaz. The version I read somewhere (in my Latin American History 101 perhaps)was "tan lejos de Dios" but if course, it could've been "cielo" also. Sometimes words get changed in translating them back and forth.

Just read the bit about Mexicans. They're hardworking people and have big hearts. Sure, they like to party and drink, and sometimes get into scuffles - but what Latino doesn't do the same? I respect these people very much for what they have gone through, and for what they go through now. They were here before the USA anyway.

Does it really matter any more? Who was here first?
No.
People have been migrating since time began in the Garden of Mesopotamia, to where ever it seemed a better life, or maybe just out of curiosity, or boredom. and they will likely continue. and, they have fought and scuffled about who can go and be where, many times covered in the name of religion, to make it seem of greater virtue. Does it really matter who was here first? no. It matters who is here now, and who is coming or wants to come, and who doesn't want them here and why. (Now, that last line was fotter for a whole other page or two, for some.)
This whole idea of immigration and aliens has become so complicated because of one simple constant in human nature, same idea as why the Colombianos have gotten a bad rap about their loyalty/fidelity - justified or not - on pbh:
THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER...

It's relevant when it comes to discussing Mexicans - they were here first before the USA unlike other Latin groups. California, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, etc. - doesn't sound like New York, Virginia, or Pennsylvania, etc. right? My point is, and I didn't do a good job of conveying it apparently, *irony*. Mexicans are the largest Latino group in America, and Latinos in general are the largest minority group. There is absolutely no need to have disdain for Mexicans given their involvement in US history.

as monpirri has said, or meant: they were here first, because they were the closest.

my point is that people will continue to migrate forevermore, just as they always have, no matter, whether mexican or pakistani, or colombian, or estados unidenese, to where ever they think they might have a 'more comfortable life' or 'more adventurous life', or 'more economical life', or 'greater opporunity to live life'.

Colombians in Austin There are actually three restaurants that serve Colombian food, maybe more. The three that I know of are Dona Emilias and Mi Colombia (both downtown, owned by the same Colombian family--Dona Emilias is more upscale) and Fajita Warehouse (620 near Lakeline Mall). Fajita Warehouse serves excellent Mexican food. The restaurant is managed by a Colombian team, very friendly folks. They also prepare excellent Colombian food on occasion and host Colombian get-togethers. Stop by and talk to the manager. Delicious! The chef prepares fabulous Colombian food, as well as European, American and Mexican food. There is a Colombian association in Austin, colombianosenaustin.org. The Colombian Consulate will make a consular visit in Austin on October 28, Woodward Hotel, 9-2, more info call 713/527-8919 or 713/527-9093. Stop by and talk to Colombians who live in Austin, there are generally association members there helping out. Have fun! There is actually quite a bit of "Colombian" activity in Austin.

Galecito: Differences between Latin Cultures Colonisation througout much of Latin America ran ahead of North American colonisation (especially the western part of North America) Ie. Boston became a colony in 1692, and Cartagena (the colony) was founded in 1533.

Since inter-regional transportaton and communication only became easy in the 20th century, it means that there was more time for regional cultures to develop. _Look at the geography - it can be quite isolating. This accounts for some of the differences between latin american countries. Additionally, there seems to have been more integration of native indigenous cultures in some latin american countries (albeit at varying levels). The native cultures would have been distinctive too, and this brings some more regional differences into the mix.

Exactly. Whereas in contrast much of the settlement in areas like western canada and the US didn't occur until *after* transportation became easier - ie. railway in Canada, ergo less of a separation, and less time to develop regional cultures and identity.

There are more college educated doctorates in my Colombian wife's family than I have ever met of Mexican college graduates any where! Maybe I should visit California or Texas more often.
