No award for Catalina Sandino today

The Screen Actors Guild awards took place today. Catalina Sandino was nominated for Best Actress but, predictably, she did not win. I didn't think she would.

Does anyone else feel that the American establishment will probably never give an important award to a Colombian? I'm not saying that Sandino is more deserving than any of her contenders, but let's say that she was... would they give the award to a total outsider? a COLOMBIAN? Probably not.

Anyone remember the Miss Universe pageant back in the '90s? I think we were runner-up 3 years in a row, or at least 2. It was unbelievable. I think there is a prejudice against our nationality. The Hollywood establishemnt would be up in arms the day that a Colombian wins an important award over one of the familiar Hollywood faces.

That's stupid. First of all, she is still very young and while I loved her and the movie, that was no where near best actress work and she did not deserve the award, so all of this is speculation. Second, give me a break. If you have any idea how the "hollywood establishment" works, you would know that the reason Sandino got the nomination in the first place was because of the rampant political correctness which goes on in tinsletown, and many other American Institutions (not that there is necessarily anything wrong with it).

The screen actors guild awards, if I am not mistaken, are voted on by the actors themselves, which are notoriously hippy. If she could have won the award on the mertis of her work, I would bet that she would have. As for the oscars, she won't win that either, but remember that this is the same crooked "establishment" that gave Denzel Washington AND Halle Berry best leading role awards for performances that most critics agreed were pretty mediocre.

DeDerechosHumanos Now take a deep breath and read my post once again, slowly.

I think that my post pretty cearly addresses the following of your statements/questions:

"I think there is a prejudice against our nationality. The Hollywood establishemnt would be up in arms the day that a Colombian wins an important award over one of the familiar Hollywood faces."

"Does anyone else feel that the American establishment will probably never give an important award to a Colombian?"

"would they give the award to a total outsider? a COLOMBIAN? Probably not."

In short. I think that "they" would give the award to a Colombian if one were truly deserving of it.

I definitely think there

I definitely think there was prejudice against Miss Colombia in the Miss Universe pageant from the years 1992-94, in which we were runner-up all three years in a row, what are the odds?! We were really robbed in 1992 when gorgeous Paola Andrea Betancourt was beaten by the skinny, bird-looking Miss Puerto Rico, Dayanarra Torres! Give me a break, I've even heard puerto ricans say that Miss Colombia deserved to win that year! Let's not forget this was during the height of the cartel wars and as I've heard some colombians say, they probably didn't give the crown to Miss Colombia because of our country's "reputation", something I find totally unacceptable because the political situation or reputation of the candidates countries should not be taken into account in a beauty contest!

I think that what makes Catalina a real long shot at the Oscars is not her nationality, but the fact that she's nominated for her first movie ever and in a non-english speaking role. But I wish her the best!

Tinto Beauty pageants in Colombia are much more important to people than they are in the U.S. and presumably Europe. The national beauty pageant in Cartagena is a major event and everyone has favorite contestants and everyone knows who won. It's part of the water-cooler conversation next day at the office. That's probably the reason why ColX knows his queens from way back. All Colombians do.

In the U.S. no one even knows the name of Miss America or where she's from. Also, people don't really care if they win Miss Universe. I respect that, but for some reason it's a big part of Colombian pop culture.

Yes, Tinto , I am in my twenties, and the reason I remember is that the national beauty pageant is a much bigger deal in Colombia than it is for example in the US. And it's still a much bigger deal if Miss Colombia get to the final rounds of Miss Universe! Believe me, there are A LOT of colombians who remember that disappointing "three-peat".

DeDerechosHumanos My post goes to the larger issue, not just Sandino.

I guess we disagree, awarding little statues to artists is a very subjective matter; being deserving or not is a matter of judgement.

Does this matter? "Does anyone else feel that the American establishment will probably never give an important award to a Colombian?"

Does this matter? Suppose the "American establishment" gives a colombian an "important" award, are you a better person for that?

Unfortunately for many colombians being recognized by America (or by Europe, or by high level strata, you name it) is understood as a huge achievement. That says a lot of the amount of self esteem of some colombians though.
