Nightlife in Pereira and Manizales

Will be visiting both cities soon and am interested to know about the nightlife in both Pereira and Manizales. Does anyone know the locations of the main districts for nighttime entertainment, bars, clubs, discos, restaurants, cafes? Unfortunately, there does not seem to be too much info on these cities on the internet so I am trying to gather some info from my fellows PBHers. If anyone has any interesting info and recommendations for Pereira or Manizales I would be very grateful.

Can't help you with specific neighborhoods or recommendations but neither city is so big that you can't easily discover all the jumpin' joints with no problems whatsoever. Both cities are lovely and are big enough to offer lots of choices for fun. Very few tourists. I liked both cities a lot.

Have fun.

Terry

Does anyone know of any good but inexpensive places to stay in Manizales. The novia and I are doing a not quite so Grand Tour of Colombia and Manizales is one of the stops that she wants to make. Looked on the internet and only found two hotels, both of which seemed to be very expensive. Any ideas?

The hotels in Manizales have almost no Internet presence. I don't remember the place I stayed, but it was around 50,000/night for a very nice private double room with en-suite bath. There are lots of choices.

Cheers,
Terry

PS Don't go to the Las Colinas though. Overpriced dump.

In Manizales I stayed at the Mountain house hostel - although I have heard different stories as to whether its open now. I am going to be vague but it will give you an idea for nightlife. The nightlife in both cities is great, although its for weekends.

Manizales. In the upmarket area (near the mountain house) is a big shopping centre with a Juan Valdez in the park outside and the old cable (for moving coffe) tower. Just near here is a nightclub which is upstairs with windows out over the city valley - great place; lots of hot women. Ther are a bunch of other places nearby, and on the corner of this park type area is a restaurant that turns into a packed bar. After 1 or 2; a lot of people to go the discos which are out on the hill where there is a walking track and a hill with staues. Good fun there also.

Periera: There is a bunch of nightclubs after you cross the bridge out of the city (if I have my facts right Periera is 'joined' to another pueblo which makes it seem as one city). Anyway; up there on the hills are some great nightclubs with views over the city.

Pretty vague but if you ask around when you get there you should be fine.

Investment Strategy - buying when others are crying!! Offloading when others are gloating!!!

I visited Manizales, didn't see much nightlife, as it is pretty small, but has several universities, so there is likely something going on. I wish I could remember the place I stayed, because it was very comfortable, and the cost, including breakfast and lunch, was about 35 dollars a night. Very nice, friendly town, not too many tourists, and dirt cheap compared to Bogota.

admittedly, arriving can feel great too

Manizales. The main cluster of bars is in El Cable, right near Cable Plaza shopping centre. It gets going quite early in the evening (cafes) and later there are discotecas.

Fonda style, go out to Alto Tablazo. Good on a Sunday night. Sometimes difficult to get a taxi back to the city.

Bar C is the most upmarket bar, gets going around midnight, cover charge 7k or so, up on a hill about 5 minutes drive from El Cable.

There are a few smaller bars in Chipre along the avenue. There are a few more just up the avenue from the Plaza de Toros (one of these plays older style, danceable music).

Manizales being a student city, it's always worth being dialled in to what events are being organised at the universities.

que nota!

These are from my notes from old PBH posts, they may be out of date.

If you want to go dancing (rumbear) you should definitively go to "La Variante" or zona rosa and visit places like "Mango Biche", "tica", "Arriba de la Loma", "El Corral", they're all different and they're basically night clubs. But, if you prefer to chill out in Pereira you should go to "La Circunvalar" Avenue, where the bars and the cool taverns are, such as "Tropical Cocktails", "Café-Café", "Societá", "Barroco", "La Rana", "La Cervecería", etc.

Now for my bit:

I visited the bar area where there was an upper floor bar with windows looking down on the road and the other bars. It was great fun watching the street life. Going home there was a tremendous rain shower and I was anxious as I had no raincoat. However lots of boys appeared from nowhere with golf umbrellas and took us to a waiting taxi. A good memory.

If you really like zoos, there's an amazing one outside the town of Pereira. When I was there they had a condor.

Let me know if the men’s barber shop is still there, it opened after my visit and had girls dressed as nurses, schoolgirls, whatever who cut your hair. Los dueños de Sexy Hair Cut, sobre la agitada carrera 4 entre calles 18 y 19 Pereira. Only in Colombia.

I never made it to Manizales, I hope to go there one day.
