LA ESCOLLERA: nighttime party on the beach

If you decide to have a party near to the beach with your friends, you can go to "LA ESCOLLERA", where you can find a lot of bars and pubs. while you are drinking you can enjoy the best typical music of the country and even international music. This place is very atractive because people go to the pubs from 8Pm to 3Am, then they go to the beach to end the party hearing vallenato playing by local artists.

You can use any kind of clothes

Mr Babillas outside the walled city. Bunch of bars nearby. Try cafe del mar inside the walled city to start. Also Palos de moguer (past Mr Babillas) has a great setting.

Monpirri, Isn't Escollera closed, like a long time ago?

Hey, careful, man, there's a beverage here!

La Escollera was torn down over 2 years ago. Then they started to construct the tallest building in Colombia on that site. However, wind twisted the steel after 40 or so floors were up(steel only). When I was there in November, only about 4 or 5 stories remained.

Tu Candela near the clock tower and Mr Babillas in Getsemani are two of the bigger names.

My favorite, of course, is La Dolce Vita in Laguito.

Bartolo_colon, I did not go to any nightclubs while in Cartagena, I just knew that in bocagrande there are several clubs, as the website says. So scout the area and enjoy the vallenato musicians by the beach.

I loved Mr. Babillas. Good sound system and tunes. My favorite club in Cartagena. There are several other bars/clubs on the same street. Babar (dance club) in the old city was nice. Although it seemed more like a bring a date danceclub. Tu Candela in the old city was fun. (went to it on a Sunday night) Some of these clubs are considered expensive by some standards. However, if I can go into a club and drink for six hours heavy, pay for my buddy, (who pays the tab the next night) and buy girls drinks all night for less than $150 that isn't too bad. AGUARDIENTE anyone? :) Hell, I remember on a few occassions we did that in Miami and it was upwards of $500

Love and happiness!

For $150 in LDV you and your buddy can have a very good time. Good thing I don't drink.

Calle del Arsenal area of the "Old Walled City, " Tu Candela, Mr. Barbillia(only on the weekends), ask any of the girls who work in the shops along Av San Matrín what's hot at the moment. Also consider a Rumba Chiva Bus tour. This is an open bus that tours the city every night stopping at several night spots for a drink and then continuing on. The bus has its own open bar and live band to keep you hopping between stops.(While the do provide a small bottle of rum gratis I suggest you BYOB.

La Escollera was torn down at least four years ago.

Rumba Chiva Bus --- is a BLAST!!! Especially if you bring your own girls with you. I can't remember for sure but it was around $10. ?? Plus it will give you a tour of the city. Def bring a few beers with you.

Love and happiness!

Classic tomtom! :-)
Cafe Del Mar is about the best place there is to take a date. Babar has the best music if you're into electronica. JoySlava is also very popular, on one side they have electronica and the other side a mixture of music. Electra is also popular with the electronica crowd, but only gets started around 3AM. (You will find lots of prepagos here also.) I've found Tu Candela to be hit or miss. Mr. Babilla is always popular.
But a lot of this depends on what you're looking for and what night of the week it is.

It has come and gone, just look at those vids that el modefoque posted today...

Andy S says on Jan 14, 2008, 08:38:

sorry not meaning to be rude but....those vids aren't electronic music tho....I don't get it...

dnb and dubstep have been and gone? I doubt that, dubstep is a new form of UK urban electronica drawing on a whole load of influeneces namely drum n bass, dub, uk garage, house music, hip hop...it's the freshest music from here...it's barely reached Europe yet and didn't really start to grow till late 2006! Most of the young Colombians I am in contact with haven't heard of either dnb or dubstep....

I could be wrong though, guess I'll find out in April! I reckon there must be some underground places with this kind of stuff playing....have you heard it anywhere mate?

kentuckygreg2 says on Jan 14, 2008, 08:50:

Honestly you won't really care too much about what music they spin. If you want electronica I heard the summer dance festival (ULTRAMAR) is sweet. However, that was a few weeks back after NYE.

The likes of Roger Sanchez, Van Dyke. best DJ's in the world for 4-5 days. I wanted to go but the prices that time of year are triple everything. (flights, hotels, etc.)

Love and happiness!

Andy S says on Jan 14, 2008, 08:58:

damn was that in Colombia Greg? I'll be here like April/May time....pity I've missed that

yeah you're right, I'm not too bothered about what kind of dance music I like a wide range of electronic stuff.....

reckon I will try and sniff some more underground stuff out somewhere though just out of interest...

kentuckygreg2 says on Jan 14, 2008, 09:09:

I like Babar for electronica. They tend to play the more mainstream commercial house along with some crossover reggaeton. Not bad though.

Yah they had a killer lineup. Probably the best lineup you can find anywhere outside of WMC in Miami.

http://www.summerdancefestival.com/

I may try to go to this next year. It is always the first week in January. I would have to book really really early. When I looked for flights they were expensive as hell which was the main reason I didn't even bother going.

Love and happiness!

Andy S says on Jan 14, 2008, 09:25:

man that looks amazing that festival, bit trance orientated but hey, still looks really good......pity this whole travelling thing was postponed, I was meant to be away in November, it could of meant I coulda gone...oh well, thats life

and as for line ups....you ever been to Ibiza mate? apart from the horrible west end with all the drunk young brits the entire island is dance music heaven, we saw Dave Clarke, Groove Armada, Steve Lawler, Pete Tong, LTJ Bukem, Fatboy Slim all in the one day......stayed up for about 3 days...muhahahaha

If you want to stay out of the sound of vallenato y salsa for a while, and if you feel a little lonely and drunk about 4.00 am , i think ELECTRA CLUB in the walled city should be cover.....your needs. Have Fun.....

Haven't been to Ibiza. Would love to but exchange rate is unfavorable right now and heard Ibiza is pricey. I get the same effect in South Beach, Miami without having to pay for the expensive flight. Am sure Ibiza is probably crazier and better than Miami.

It's on my places to go list though. Top 10 definitely.

Love and happiness!

The Chiva bus is a different experience. It's only for a few hours and you can do early in the evening prior to hitting the nightclubs. I had a good time. BUT...it's BYOC. Bring your own Colombiana. :)

Love and happiness!

peteyw says on Jan 14, 2008, 14:03:

Kentuckygreg2 has good recommendations. Chiva, Babar are good spots.

Mr Babilla's is good if you like mostly blancas, which is fine by me. However, if you like honey nut brown, sculpted rumped, sizzling ladies who look like 19 year old Pam Greers, then the place is Escandalo. Its on the other side of town, big (double the size of Mr. Babillas), nice sound system, decor, excellent ventillation, plays a variety of music from house to disco to salsa to vallenatto.

LDV is 100% whores, Tu Candela is 30 to 70% prepagos depending on the night. I'm sure you're not flying all the way to Colombia to buy a whore. Only a sick twist would fly a thousand miles for a hooker (er...ELMO is exempt from this generalization as he has special needs and requirements.. he qualifies for a lifetime 'get out of the 'ho house free' card)

peteyw,
escandelo is cool, but the saturday night I was there (about a year ago now) I never heard one house song, and barely any regaaeton, i.e. anything a gringo could act like he was dancing too... But the chicas were on the tables dancing by the end of the night so it was bacano...

There is another spot by the bridge up top it reminds me of cafe del mar kind of the same effect but it is clear on the other side. I can't remember the name...it is also nice. Occasionally, they have bands they charge a cover. It is outside as well with the ocean view.

Mr Babilla is cool they predominantly play Salsa and they cross over every now and then.

I agree Babar is nice too they have a cover as well.
