Nigerian Slain Over E-Mail Scam

A notorious e-mail scam has resulted in the murder of a Nigerian diplomat in the Czech Republic.

Fifty-year-old Michael Lekara Wayid, Nigeria's consul in the Czech Republic, was shot dead by an unidentified 72-year-old Czech at the Nigerian Embassy in Prague on Wednesday.

According to police reports, the suspect was a victim of the 419 scam, a thriving industry that employs thousands of people around the world. The scammers successfully manage to extort money from thousands of victims by promising them compensation for assistance in moving funds from foreign countries to banks in the United States.

podborski says on Jul 31, 2007, 04:24:

You know, I hate the scammers, but anyone dumb enough to fall for it deserves to lose some cash. Often these con men tell people something is a little shady, and that's why they are willing to cut you in. So I have little sympathy for the dishonest fools who fall for it.

If it sounds too good to be true...

When I worked in Tokyo, some (not Japanese) guys came in with a reference letter from Citibank . They claimed to have some crazy amount of gold, like 2,000 tons or something like that. I thought that sounded mighty suspicious so I checked around a little and that would have meant they owned 90% of all the gold in the world.

I guess their theory was to lie really BIG.

Anyway, we showed them the door, although the little Japanese banker with me was afraid we were offending possibly very important people. That's how they usually succeed, they intimidate junior people who are trying to do a good job and don't know any better.

Panth you would not believe how gullible some people are, I watched an Oprah show and people did away with their life savings and houses, all for someone they had never met!

Pod when I seen that a part of me felt really sorry for them and a part of me felt like they deserved it...yes they intimidate and pressure people into dismissing their better judgement, you have to be tough in business! No worrying about hurting someone's feelings or offending them...

gringolondinense says on Jul 31, 2007, 04:35:

haah yer i can believe it. mona, the way most of these scams work, especially the nigerian ones, is that to get the money, you have to keep paying "fees" to release the cash. And then more admin fees appear surprise, surprise :)

0 funny, 0 helpful.

podborski says on Jul 31, 2007, 04:38:

It's true mona, some people just aren't very 'with it', but I still think anyone with a bit of money should know better.

I think it's different with very old people, SOME of whom just don't think as clearly as when they were younger.

And I also agree with the Czech method of dealing with these scammers (although in this case I suspect the Nigerian diplomat had nothing to do with the scam but was just a symbol?)

podborski says on Jul 31, 2007, 04:44:

Now that I think about it, I remember an ex-mayor of Toronto was sucked into a scam like this. He was a client of the bank I worked for. He was about to part with, I believe, almost a million dollars. Several hundred thousand anyway. I tried to talk him out of it, but he was dead set on it. Not sure if he did go through with it or not, he did withdraw the funds from the bank.

I imagine if he did go through with it, he'd probably be too embarrassed to admit it later.

Anyway, a guy like that has brains (well maybe not so much), lawyers, advisors, and he still went for it. Pure greed if you ask me.

LA_MONA says on Jul 31, 2007, 04:46:

Yes Pod that's true it appeals to truly greedy people who cannot pass up the opportunity..a person I know also is paying back a huge loan he took out when some guys turned up from EEUU to offer him a "once in a lifetime" chance to double or triple his investment, guess what? Nada...I am not sure what happened exactly but his wife has to put up with his depression and help him pay that loan....

podborski says on Jul 31, 2007, 05:07:

Maybe I am less forgiving because I was an investment advisor for a few years, until I got so fed up with clients telling me how their brother-in-law, neighbour, guy they met in a bar, etc., all had easy, 'guaranteed' ways to make 20, 30 or even 60% a year, and why couldn't I get them that?

When I pointed out that the world reknowned, widely acknowledged best investor in history (who proved it by becoming the richest man in the world for a time), Warren Buffett, earned around 24% a year, so that their neighbour claiming he was guaranteeing 30% might be a bit skeevy, well, they just didn't want to hear it.

I don't have a lot of patience for these people.

And I also had to help more than a few try to recover lost fortunes after they fell for some of these schemes.

To me it's just so obvious (but it's my field, so I guess I should realize that not everyone understands this). If banks are willing to lend money to anyone that can fog a mirror for between 6 and 9%, why would someone be willing to pay you 20, 30 or 40% to borrow your money?

It's either a scam (most likely), or extremely risky.

But people like to believe it's a lot more complicated than that, or that rich people 'know secret ways to invest'.

They don't know secret ways to invest, they just know the right people.
