Newborn Baby Dumped In Trash DEAD; Colombian Street Justice in ACTION.

As I arrived in one of my favorite hillside barrios in Medellin, there were thousands of people out on the streets, something was definitely not good from the looks on peoples faces as they walked away from the scene. It was surreal....

My taxista did not want to drop me off, but I told him whatever happened has already happened. I jumped ou tof the taxi and made my way to my friends shop a few feet away from ground zero.

Turns out someone dumped a newborn baby into the trash, which was discovered after the bag was dumped into the garbage truck, beheading the newborn baby. It took them awhile before they were able to remove the deceased which they placed on the ground for further investigations.

Seems a young mother of 21 years of age did not want to care for the baby and decided the best thing to do was to stuff a piece of cloth in its mouth and dump it out with the trash.

Colombian street justice........

Next day, the young woman was assasinated in Itagui around noon time.

Day after, her sister who assisted with dumping the baby was caught coming down the hill and she recieved a serious beat down, lucky to be alive, she is now in the local jail cell being processed for murder.

NO ONE in the barrio is feeling sorry for the dead mother.

This is Colombian street justice at work..... wondering who calls the shot on something like this?

It´s a sad story... the locals go about their day as if nothing happened because the dead mother deserved it.

Wondering who calls the shots on something like this? Sometimes there is a "town meeting" but it depends on the crime. Don't be suprised if the family of the father of the murdered child had something to do with this or EVEN the family of the woman who murdered - although I doubt the latter.

Street Justice

"In support of Simon, drugs in Colombia carry a VERY negative stagmatism. The percentage of users is extremely LOW compared to the US or Europe where smoking pot is considered a social thing. People are caught smoking or dealing pot in some barrios and are forcibly and permanently evicted. This is not a joke. There is a very religious and conservative outlook on using drugs in this country and you will be labeled "Satanico" for wearing an Iron Maiden T-Shirt." me (http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/post/presidential-candidates-view-on-...)

This is what I was talking about. Colombian Estrato 5/6 expatriates living abroad and foreigners who moved to to a Colombian estrato 5/6 hardly ever see the street justice exists.

I got razzed in some other posts (http://india.poorbuthappy.com/colombia/post/what-is-the-funniest-or-mo...) about street justice being responsible for permanently removing someone from a neighbborhood. I wasn't always talking about death.

rocinante says, "People get cast out of barrios all the time."

That does seem to be the case when death is not warranted for whatever crimes or wrongs were commited.

The people in the barrios sometimes say of murdered victims in street justice, "they asked for it."

What´s interesting is how no one seems tramautized, including young children.

On one of my earlier trips up the hill alone, I was not sure were to turn, there were about five guys hanging out, saw I was lost, and pointed me into the right direction, knowing were I was going even though I¨ve never seen these guys before. Yesterday, this woman I was speaking with told me her son was interrogated a few weeks back as he walked up the hill to visit her. They did not know who he was, complete stranger in the barrio, he was escorted to his mother´s home, everything turned out okay.

There are eyes and ears in every barrio, including an unofficial "mayor" so to speak, who holds the meetings dealing with sensitive issues.

Sounds like paramilitary violence to me. I have heard about many cases like this one: a young woman hiding pregnancy for like ever, unable to get an abortion, scared shitless about the future goes on a does something stupid without thinking about the real meaning of throwing a living creature in a bin, literally. Abortion should be legal and accessible...its precisely that narrow minded catholic mentality what caused this tragedy.

It seems every barrio (or area of barrio) has a mayor.

The problem with abortion is that it is costly. If someone here wants one there are ways to get them. Yes it's more difficult but some doctors perform the procedure. I feel if it were legal that the above would still have taken place due to the fact of the monetary cost.

Cerealkiller says on Aug 9, 2008, 07:24:

It doesn't have to be a costly procedure. When done correctly (legally) is safer and simpler than a birth, it can be induced through a pill or an ambulatory procedure that does not require heavy investment. Abortions are expensive in Colombia because they're illegal, not because they're complicated. Abortions in the UK, for instance, are cheaper than an ultrasound (if done privately).
If these girls were given the chance to go to a local clinic and get an abortion in a sterile environment nobody would have to worry about dying in the procedure, picking up baby bodies while collecting the trash, or being brutally murdered by some imbecile with a gun.

i'll tell you how abortion takes place....it's not expensive...my house maid, years ago used it.

there's a place downtown, a farmacia, where a women gets--as i remember--3 pills. she takes these, and her body goes into trauma and slughs off the fetus. cost? less than $10.00

dwmte7,

You are correct, there is a pill that women can take to abort the fetus. I know a Costa Rican girl who purchased the pill at the farmacia and it worked for her. It made her sick as a dog in the process, but no bebe.

And using condoms is cheaper than a child birth and an abortion. This woman may have decided AFTER birth that she didn't want the child - I mean she carried the baby for nine months - I doubt no one knew. Abortion suddenly seems to be an inexpensive option (Douglas quotes 10 measly bucks for a pill and a 3 day sickness). So perhaps the decision to murder the child occurred after birth.

So can we say the imbecile with the gun whacked a woman who stuffed a cloth in an infant's mouth and wrppaed him in a plastic bag and tossed him in the dumpster? And not a woman who had an abortion? Abortion is available for ten bucks, no doctor. Or maybe we don't know the circumstances of the situation - obviously. Maybe she didn't want an abortion throughout her term and a circumstance arose after birth. We don't know.

Meaning...

Although I chimed in on abortion, this post is about street justice and the murder of a murderer as handled by a neighborhood vigilante (English definition of vigilante) - not about the murder of a woman who had an abortion. She didn't have one and apparently the option is available and cheap.

These pills douglas and MT mentioned are not abortives, they're medications usually prescribed for other conditions which are grossly misused by poor women to interrupt pregnancies. Very often are this pills the cause of fatal hemorrhages, so its not safe and ultimately not cheap.
I don't believe whoever shot this young woman killed her rightfully. Doesn't matter if she planned on getting rid of the child from the get go. I am sure the heartless bastard who did that was not going to take care of the creature had she kept it, fed it, paid for school. If these people knew who did it, the should have reported her to the authorities. Whoever killed her deserves to be put in jail for 1st degree murder.

Not in any way true.
Those people in the barrio live a brutal existence-a life unimaginable to us on this board.

Sad to say that abandoned babies are still common everywhere even here in Canada-a young woman gave birth in a Wal Mart toilet in Prince Albert Saskatchewan a few years ago, last year someone abandoned a tiny child in a shopping mall stairway in Toronto-the list goes on and on.

It may appear brutal and inhumane to all of us but in light of how it was accepted in this barrio it is a statement as to how things work there and how justice is meted out. We need not agree with it any more than the stoning of an adulteras in a fundamentalist muslim country but it is their way. Kinda like in China where they dispense with all the small talk and haggling, and just shoot the culpable and send the bill for the bullet to the family. It just shows what a thin veneer of civilization we really have.
