Hi all,
Colombiche has agreed to join our moderator team, so welcome Colombiche! It's not a fun job (seriously), so I'm very happy she's agreed to it.

I think the moderators do a terrible job and I blame them for the state of PBsH. They play favorites. They delete posters and posts they don't like but which do not violate the rules. They let other behavior pass even though it blatantly disregards the rules. If you are going to have mods make them apply the rules even handedly to EVERYONE! Colombiche I am sure will behave in the same way deleting anything she disagrees with and letting other posters that she likes get away with murder.

"Colombiche likes to fight as much as anyone here. Why pick someone to moderate who has been involved in numerous battles with a list of enemies as long as your arm? You may as well pick Rubito or Pow Wow."

Utopia cowboy, I must have a really short arm because I don't really think I have any out in the open enemies here.

I have my opinionated moments (isn't this what this board is about), I state my points but I have never told anybody to f off even when I have been told to f off, which has been numerous times but I am not thinned skinned and know how to take the heat.

I don't know where you get the idea that I will let posters I like get away with murder while I come down on posters I dislike. I was a mod at cblog for a year and a half and I never banned anybody, only deleted obvious trolls and spammers. I don't believe in abusing the priviledge of being a mod.

To tell you the truth I feel like the class clown who suddenly got asked to be a grown up and help the teacher monitor all her friends.

As I said, I have been picked for the job and I would like to help out since I have been around for a while and this page is something that Peter is kind enough to allow us to enjoy for free.

I could also think of many people who would make wonderful mods, I would have voted for them. I will only be a mod if people feel comfortable with me, If I hear an allround concensus that I am not wanted, I would let it be.

Desideria (Moderator) says on Oct 3, 2007, 06:37:

Utopia, your bitterness is distorting your vision. Yes, we have a bunch of people who think this is their own private little playground, but with more moderators on board we will be able to have a better control over the contents of these messages. You don't agree with our policies of freedom of speech (but be nice), bredth and variety of topics (off-topic have their own forum), as little deletion and demotion as possible (but have some self-discipline!), then maybe this is NOT the right board for you and you need to contribute with your valuable insight and information to some other blog that is censured and controlled with a sterner hand.

Don't make it our problem, we spend a lot of hours here reading and deleting trolls and spam, moving topics around but no board is better than the sum of its active contributors. Wwe're working hard, Utopia, to bring out the good, serious contributors and reducing the noise ratio. But, talking for myself, will NOT become a hard-.handed military person clubbing down people everytime thet say something foolish.

Cheers,
Desi

Utopia leave the mods alone. Maybe you and Rubito should be mods. Now theres a concept lol. This board has in the last 4 or 5 months come alive with many new and good posters. But in the last few days it has once again deteriorated into a kind of trailer trash mentality. I sure am thankful for the ignore button but some of this stuff is over the top. I don't understand Utopia's stance. It seems as though he is contradicting himself, but I could just not be understanding him.

First he says that he is all for freedom of speech and no Nazis, Free French etc etc etc. Then he comes back and chastises the moderators for not deleting enough, for letting people get away with posting "Toxic waste". Does anybody see the contradiction?

So then, help me out here, what do you want more freedom or more censorship?????

I really don't think people on this board are all clueless. They range from the wide eyed newbie that has never been to chibchombia to the northamericans that have chosen to make Colombia their home, to the colombians who live in Colombia and outside. I find that very interesting!!! I have very much respect for foreigners who picked up shop and moved down to Colombia. They left the comfort of the first world to find a different meaning to their lives. You know they are not doing it for the money, sometimes for love, sometimes for women.... but not always. I find this reversal of the american dream fascinating.

Utopia, you used to be a nice guy. Funny, but sincere and nice, somebody I enjoyed bickering with. At some point you took a turn to trollville. If you think 80% of the contents of the board are so dismal then there must be something else keeping you here and prompting you to spend the time to create new handles to post under. The point is is you are not part of the solution then what is the point in complaining, complaining and complaining?

I hope people don't hesistate to get in touch with me if you have any suggestions, tips, requests, concerns etc etc etc etc.

Colombiche I applaud you for helping out here. I look forward to the day when this board will be like a small community of friends. I have seen this on other boards. One board for example allot of the members came together to give blood to a child who was very sick. I have seen this kind of thing on PBH also but it is not the norm. It's kind of rare here. More time is spent attacking posters with verbal abuse you would expect from a 12 year old. Yet there are many posters here who readily give information and their experiences about Colombia in a non combative way. I look forward to better days on PBH because of forward looking mods.

" I went from being someone who contributed to being a complete asshole and my PBH life improved immensely. Something is wrong with a board when you're better off being an asshole instead of a good citizen."

I went from being a contributor to a hermit versus an asshole. Two years ago I called someone who sent me a PM about my advice and was totally disgusted with his questions. Shortly thereafter another member attacked the hell out of me for teaching Spanish speakers English, apparently not knowing that I am a gringo that speaks Spanish. Both of those people remain active members of PBH and in my opinion, contribute nothing positive on this forum.

The moderators know who I am talking about. "Vamos a ver lo que pasaré, entonces"

I have no doubt that Colombiche can be a valuable asset as a moderator and I also have no doubt that she will bug out to the dugout when she feels it's "no vale la pena".

Probably UC got a completely asshole. But he knows what it talks about and he is always on score. Plus, I enjoy his style.
GIB knows what it talks about (I am not talking about economy). His problem is in his style and in responding to provocations. But the way he gets thrashed is ridiculous and should not be permitted.
M_C is a funny guy. Very intelligent, easy going and with a great sense of irony. I hope GIB and M_C will stop fighting one day. Maybe, the only way is to make them meet...
Some other guys are really easy target. no sense of irony at all. Not anyone has got the same kind of intelligence. Anyway, irony or not, mods should defend the weak.
Colombianmike or Peso_player is an intelligent guy, too. But he can be a total asshole and contribute nothing. When he gets too much, now, he is the one to ban.

I remember several posts written by Scotty being deleted... and, from my point of view, without a reason, yet they were not colombia related but they were not offending anyone.

Utopia ... did it ever freaking occur to you that the "alt 1,6,4" doesn't work on a laptop? Laptops are those computers that probably a third of people now use. They are a little smaller than a desktop and portable!!! For about a half year or more, I couldn't figure out why I couldn't produce the squiggly over the n, even with the instruction. FINALLY, somebody enlightened me that it was because I use a laptop. So, to everybody that was wondering why they can't produce Spanish letters, it may be because it is impossible with most laptops sold in the US.

pedro says on Oct 3, 2007, 22:52:

RJ, yes it will work, provided your laptop has a key combination to serve as the numeric keypad.

On my Dell laptop, it's Fn at the bottom left near the Alt key. It's in blue and then if you look on your keyboard you'll see other miniature symbols in blue. Example, my J key has a miniature 1 next to it in blue. If I hold down Fn and J, I get a 1. This is the numeric keypad 1.

Another option is a bit fiddly, you can use "on screen keyboard". Go to Start menu in Windows, Run..., type in osk, and you will figure it out.

I have 3 options, in my accessories folder i have a sub-folder called system tools and in that folder there is another folder called character maps, in there i can find all types of "funny" letters from all languages, the other solution of course alt-164 but you need to use the numbers on the right side of the keyboard not the ones above because in some keyboards won't work, and the last one but not least i just copy and paste from one of you ejejej...
