New moderator

Hi all. A quick announcement: since a few days ago, Desi is our newest moderator! Did you notice any difference? I'm very happy that she's agreed to take up the job, and believe me, a job it is, so a round of applause please :) The other active moderators right now are Tinto and me, by the way.

I think it's a good choice but Desi, I know you think you have a thick skin, but I don't know if it's thick enough (yet) for this job. You might have to toughen up a bit!

pod, I don't know if there's anybody with a skin thick enough for the job but I've been moderating a couple other Colombia forums for some time now and it hasn't been that hard. Then again, I do have Peter and Tinto working closely with me; with two such fine gentlemen by my side I feel safe and secure:)

Cheers,
Desi

Peter,
thanks for the introduction! Cheers and enjoy your time in Colombia.

Be careful, my intuition is keen.
No, I don't know squat about Peter except that he kicked my friend, Gringodiego, off the site a few months ago, JUS FOR TELLIN G5 TO GO F at #* HIMSELF, in three short orders. Imagine that!

IN ALL SINCERITY,... I THINK DESI WILL DO A GOOD JOB.

Being Moderator: a Thankless Job.
But, you have my confidence.
You're going to get your own spot in Wikepedia yet ;)

I hope you won't be quite as tough as Peter/Tinto! lol
And, thanks for taking upon yourself The Thankless Job.

Where do we go from here?

Overall, good luck to Desi, Peter, Tinto & co.

Ok, I was already moderator when Arthur Brode published those horrible pictures of my beloved Cali amd said then that if this forum had had a female moderator his thread would alredy have been deleted and I answered him bt saying "Be not so sure about it".

I'm not here to antagonize with anybody and I will be applying pretty much the same criteria as Tinto does and it'll be Peter's rules and policies for this forum. I'm pretty sure most of the posters won't even be aware of what I've done this far here and what I'll be doing as a moderator.

Cheers,
Desi

Desi a moderator? ¡DIOS MIO! Now that I have your attention, I like the idea. She's been a deputy on the "Sólo en español" forum for a while, and with the differences in time zones, she will be able to monitor the overnight posts made in Las Americas.

A post I read from her over two years ago was what prompted me to sign up on PBH.

¡ALERTA! Nunca dice que le gusta la camisa guayabera o habla mierda de Cali. And Desi, kat1 and I will help you spot old posters with new names. You need a little help there! :-D

Thanks strobers. The only thing I can promise is that I'll try my best.

Miguel is right about the time zones. It's a definite advantage to have one mod in Europe and one in the Americas since this is a truly 24-hour forum.

I think Arthur is referring to the "solo en espanol" thread. I deleted it because:

1. It implied that Colombian women could be "had" for only a box of cookies. An insulting generalization. Read the rules.

2. There were some photos and Arthur bragged about "doing" the women in the photos or their friends or something like that, presumably in exchange for the cookies.

Tinto, with all due respect That was a misinterpretation on your part.I would never in my life imply that a Colombian woman could be "had" for a box of Cookies.Give me a break!"conquistar" does not mean "had".Maybey i should have used the word "enamorar"or"seducir"or"llegar al corazon"And yes i jokingly bragged about "doing" one of the women in the photo, but NOT in exchange for a box of Cookies....Please!! So Tinto, i conclude my post was unjustly deleted!

Gomezman5 says on Dec 6, 2006, 07:16:

Galecito...I said what I said And interestingly enough, it is pretty much what Miguel Clavo was referencing in his other thread congradulating Desi and Tinto. In that thread, Miguel Clavo pointed out how of all the moderation here, not one person is Colombian.

So, when I mentioned how the poll had indicated that most people here are American....by a distinct majority, and more importantly only 25% were from Colombia, it stands to reason that the moderation is going to be reflective of non Colombian thinking and ideologies, that are purported to be representative of what Colombia is like. Non Colombians are giving their point of view of Colombia but only from the perspective they come from. I don't have doubt that Desi knows Colombia well, and her Spanish is clearly better than mine. However, she has a European frame of reference when it comes to her interpretation of things. Attitudes and actions that are perfectly acceptable in Colombia, are often not accepted in Europe....especially countries like Sweden, or being PC is the order of the day. In Colombia, thank God, there is no such thing as being PC. So I often wonder how someone like her ....not just her.....but others similarly situated might really enjoy life in Colombia, when she comes from a totally different frame of reference.

litost says on Dec 6, 2006, 07:32:

I'm not in this discussion, but I just want to point out that the poll asked "where do you live", not "where do you come from" or "where were you born". Since I am now living in Paris I clicked on "others", but excuse me for saying this I think I have a lot more background enabling me to talk about Colombia than somebody who's been there a couple of years chasing around paisas and throwing around cookies.

As for Desi, she may not be colombian but she has showed us over years, without a shadow of a doubt, that she is profoundly interested and deeply understanding of colombian culture (albeit somewhat calicentric). I find it natural that she be a moderator on this site. The colombian moderator may sound like a good idea, but personally I think it would be very difficult to distinguish nationalistic pride and bias from the enforcement of the rules of this site.

You say that you are not in the discussion, but you write 2 paragraphs anyway. Doesn't that make you a part of the discussion? Or are you just sending vibes so others may pick up on your point?

BTW, litost, don't "kiss up" with the below quote:
"As for Desi, she may not be colombian but she has showed us over years, without a shadow of a doubt, that she is profoundly interested and deeply understanding of colombian culture"

That line was funny. I asserted above that Desi is knowledgable. I would not put it quite as strongly as you however.

I guess since i am also a California High School graduate and CA undergraduate, i should check out this other site....but that would take up too much time....for me, 1 site is enough. i read PBH to obtain practical and real information from people (whom are the REAL EXPERTS on this site, not the self-proclaimed ones!) who have real first hand experience and the subsequent knowledge with life in Colombia, but i also hate to see so much ColombiaBashing, and that is when i get involved. Its a real disservice to Colombians and Colombia. And what purpose does it accomplish? I think Peter intended PBH as a positive site, not the negative site it seems to be. Wow sensitive aren't we Tinto? Can't take a tweak here and there?

It's common knowledge my man, the best bosses, are the ones that don't want to be a boss, or whose responsibility as a boss is secondary to the real part of their job. Consistent with the above, I think someone that is predisposed to moderating on several different forums, is someone who likes to impose their rules, and will, as they see it, in forums where free speach is encouraged. Hey, you made my point all the more, when you said that the next moderator should be a female. That was the only standard that you set forth in that post. And only days later,..,almost like magic, Desi was appointed. Coincidence? Yea sure.

The same applies to moderators on a forum. Those who want to be moderators are often the ones that are least capable of doing it fairly. On the whole Tinto, with the exception of some bias against my point of view, I think you do a good job at moderating. You also have a tendency to take a "rule" that you claim is simple to abide by, and apply it somewhat inconsistently....depending on the subject of course. Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a simple rule. If that were the case, there would be a lot of lawyers out of jobs.
No mind. Nobody is perfect. Nothing personal.

However Tinto, if you cannot take a bit of tweaking.,..ignore my posts. Cut me off, and you send the wrong message to all. I'm one of those types that if you ignore me, I'll step back. Others tweak me all the time. Why should you be exempt? However, complaining about my "swipes" at moderation, and you add fuel to the fire, and I come right back. I do it for fun, and for principle.

Tinto You make it sound as if I have this long history of wanting to turn this site into women and dating. Where did you see me advocate that? When? You will not find it anywhere so I'll spare you the search. My only complaint deals with when something involving a woman comes up, whether it be a picture (nothing obscene of course) or where to find women at a CLUB, or something is said that could,,,,,not neccessarily is, but could be deemed sexists, the red lights start glaring and the sirens start sounding. Gays get protection though. Sure there has been lighted hearted talk about Colombian women that come up in a thread, or a post, but that does not mean the you should go nuts about it. To take women out of discussions about Colombia is a joke. It will come up and it should come up. It is a big part of Colombia,,,,,just as much a part of Colombia as the security situation, drugs, coffee, it scenery, and anything else......only more so. Your concern that someone makes a comment about Colombia, in relation to women, and the fact that it might be offending some woman, makes no sense. Colombian men......talk about women night and day. It is a big part of their culture. And there is not a soul on this board that can tell me otherwise. Every Colombian knows that ....both men and women.....

So don't make it sound that I think that we should turn the board into a big discussion room of hookers and alike. If that is what you think, you sure the hell am reading things into my posts that just are not there. Talk about what I write, not about what you percieve that I mean to have written. There is a difference you know. If you are going to moderate fairly, than by all means you should know the difference..........

BTW, I noticed Kernow does not participate here anymore, but he is very active on CBlog.....anyone know why?

Oh, and Tinto.....let's forget this stuff already. I do agree with your post about people arguing about the forum....the one you put in Miguel Clavo's other thread. HOWEVER, even the very issue that I am addressing can be left off the threads, if you allowed yourself to recieve emails. I think moderators should be required to do so. I have Desi's. Even if you just set one up (like I have) for just this site, you will find for sure, that a lot of the debate, especially the procedural stuff and "bitching" would be kept off the threads if people were able to bring the issue to you directly.

The other female mods don't usually delete thread either, they are just outspoken, big deal, they are just as entitled to their opinion as you are to yours. What scares you guys so much about hearing what the other side has to say?

I find your fear of having a female mod so amusing, as if a woman is not capable of being impartial. As far as I know PBH is a page about Colombia and its people where everybody is welcome to participate, not a boy's club where a moderator should be given the third degree on the basis of her gender. People are people, qualities such as intelligence and impartiality don't restrict themselves to a specific gender.

Sorry Miguel Clavo ..you missed UC's point You did NOT read UC's post correctly. His post was not about racist comments. It was about mean spirited attacks on people who don't agree with the popular "company line" and therefore to discourage such opinions, people get mean spirited by attacking one's race.

UC's post centered around this comment:
"I get insulted and tarred and feathered on a regular basis here. PBSH is a nasty mean-spirited place but there has been no organized effort, until now, to censor lines of thought which are unpopular with a certain segment of the audience."

UC used the comment about him being a "White man" as an example of how people are mean spirited when unpopular lines of thought are discussed. I have to go through the same crap when I start expressing my opinions on Colombia. Same thing. Different person. Different context. I know you think it's funny when I get called every name under the sun, just because I say that Colombia is a very unsafe country. But that that is what UC is talking about. I have an opinion. And personal attacks for expousing it go uncensored, thereby encouraging more crap. Or to put it another way, the same people that attack UC about being a white man, also are calling me a scare mongerer, or chicken, thin skinned, and even questioned my manhood. Same thing Mr. Clavo......same thing.

Desi I missed it too because I was traveling when you become a moderator, that's why I have not posted any comments here on this thread.
I do not know if everybody else have noticed but there are too many prostitution topics going on here or similar subtle and related topics.
Colombianas are subject of harassments by three or four individuals and it is always the same dudes who continue to post the same BS.
I wonder what does Peter think about this escalating problem?

Desi, congratulations!!!!!

Thank you guys I think we'll keep Elmo, at least for the time being. He DOES have some entertainment value, or had when he started. Now it's just hookers and toilet stuff that I don't think are so amusing any longer. Monpirri, I will find out what Peter thinks about every other thread either discussing prostitution or degenerating into lockerroom talk; I haven't done much of anything about all those hooker threads but maybe you're right; it can't be so much fun being a Colombian, man or woman and reading these posts.

Cheers,
Desi

No, I don't see him as Colombian he's Colombian born, but has lived all his life in USA and his thinking is very much New York.

I’m the only one here who has lived the true Colombian experience and every time I return you’ll find me in the same places where I grew up. I’m neither middle class nor rich, I grew up in the deepest of Colombian poverty and they still make up over 65 percent of the population, which would make them the majority.
In my Colombia women love their Colombian men and defend them to the end.
Not one single Columbiana here is married, dating or even likes Colombian guys!

Not true False statement Elmo, I like colombian guys. My colombian cousins are married to or dating colombian guys.

I have been all over the world, it takes a lot more than a blue passport to impress me and at the end of the day, there is no place like home.

what a poor description of what is being Colombian!

I don't have to justified why me or my sister or whoever are married to Foreigners, I married for love not nationality. Elmo you have a very shallow mentality may i said.

As I said if marriying a foreigner made me less Colombia, so be it who cares!

Snr. Defoque Pardon me for intruding, but I've seen that picture of you as a young man. And I must say that you were very good-looking. I wish I'd had that smouldering toreador look when I was 20. I find it hard to believe that you'd have had ANY difficulty bedding Colombianas.
My wifes's niece is an ex Reina del Barrio and her (impoverished) husband looks like Sitting Bull.

Iy was just my opinion as Desi not as a moderator. Sorry I should've made it clear...I stand by what I said, based on what I've read here during these three years he's been participating. It's not a value judgement; it doesn't make him a better or a worse person . I just gave a simple answer to a simple questions. Don't read too much into it.

I think I’ve spent close to 50 thousand USA dollars for Colombian hookers.
