El Son de la Loma
This archetypal salsa bar has been pumping out the classics since 1981. Indeed, the big screen TV may be the only modern touch in a charmful setting which holds an extensive vinyl collection and wall mounted photos of salsa legends close to its heart. Despite some very energetic salsa pesada (heavy salsa), both young and old tend to sit and soak up the friendly atmosphere with only sporadic moments of dancing.

Medellin Experience
Medellin Experience was the first serious tour company in Medellin and is probably still the best pound for pound operator. Its profile rocketed after several international news agencies picked up on the now infamous and slightly controversial Pablo Escobar tour. While it offers an extensive portfolio of excursions – including a helicopter sightseeing tour - its focus is on custom made experiences rather than off the shelf packages.

Royal Thai
Royal Thai is the first genuine Thai restaurant in Medellin and as such, it’s easy to get overly exited by its arrival. But, the truth is, Royal Thai would hold its head up high in many other, more cosmopolitan, cities of the world. Indeed, this is not Colombian-Thai food. Somebody in Medellin was wise enough to ensure the cook is from Bangkok and upon first evidence, so is the food. The upstairs even has Thai-style on-the-floor seating – although it remains to be seen whether Paisas will be open to passing small portions of food back and fourth instead of piling their plates sky high. Don’t forget to ask if you like it hot.
