New here; why Colombia?

Hello.

I read the contributions on this forum and I can see that many of you want to live in Colombia.
What does attract you here?
Is it not the most dangerous country in South America ?

It's just like any other place on the planet, if you really want to...you can find dangerous or you can be on point and watch your ass. I try and take calculated risks only when necessary but danger is always nearby when your in unfamiliar territory. Do your research and check the stats. Last I checked, Colombian cities are on par with American cities and if you want to go outside them talk with people first. I agree with Pdave.

What attracts me is that most of my family is from there. The people seem warm and genuine; they seem to really enjoy life, regardless of economical situation/status. It always seems like a party there, no matter what day it is. The women are beautiful and the countryside/views are very soothing. It's also a very diverse place with several different regions to explore. It is also very affordable for a person with American dollars. Your money can really stretch there.

Is Brazil not the most dangerous country in South America?
My neice spent a year working in Medellin, then travelled to Cartagena, Santa Marta, Cali & Bogota over a 6 month period. No problems anywhere. Then she went to Brazil for another 3 months. Duriing that time she was mugged SEVEN times and shot in the head whilst the bus she was travelling on got ambushed by bandits. Thankfully it was a glancing blow and after hospital attention she was okay to continue travelling. She came straight back to Colombia where she "felt safe."

I have heard the same thing about certain areas of Brazil. I have never been myself, but I am under the impression good old fashioned street crime by thugs is very prevalent in Brazil. My sources include over a dozen Brazilians themselves who now live here in the US. Even if comparing Brazilian street crime to Colombian street crime, and coming up with identicle numbers ... If you tell somebody here you are going to Brazil, the reaction would probably be "Oh, that's great, beautiful, your so lucky, etc." But when you tell somebody here about going to Colombia ... well, you know the typical reaction.

Same goes for Mexico where canadians tourists have been murdered and mugged over that last few years, or the DR where I have clients in the security business and I personally know people who have been robbed and shot.

As soon as you say "Colombia" people go "oooohh dangerous" not knowing that other countries that they frequent are just as bad if not worst.

I lived in Brasil for a couple years, beginning around when Lula took office.

Brasil is FAR too vast a country to make sweeping generalizations about - but it is true that the major cities (sao paolo, rio, bahia) are wicked dangerous sometimes. Much of the blame lies with local politicians, who protect their turf to the point where Lula's troops, when offered, are rejected by local mayors/governors, no matter how outmanned/outgunned by the gangs the locals are. Having said that- the country is so vast and diverse, as long as one excludes the biggest cities, Brasil is like any other place - with people warm and welcoming, on a par with Colombia, in my experience.

Rio is visually maybe the most beautiful city I've ever seen. Absolutely magnificent. Sao Paolo is just another megalopolis in my book. I'd rather take a beating than spend time there. Both of them have the capacity to get very dangerous, very quickly. A few years ago the biggest prison gang virtually shut down Sao Paolo for a few days, for example.

Give me Colombia any day, if city life is what I want.

britabroad says on Dec 15, 2007, 14:20:

I´ve heard that the atmosphere in Sao Paolo is so thick with expetant danger you could cut it with a knife. Parts of Rio too, although I´ve never been to Brazil.
I personally find Colombia fine. It´s different to the UK but ´the spice of life´ and all that. I actually find it quite a liberating lifestyle here. If I feel like doing 100mph down the autopista, no one´s going to stop me, and they haven´t heard of speed cameras - yet. If I want to cycle down to the local shops at night and don´t have lights, so what? Neither does anyone else.
What I´m trying to say is that the pettyness and small-shit you encounter in the UK and Europe, and probably the US too, doesn´t exist here. There´s far more important things to worry about. I like that.

When I read some comments (chelesupercono, billyb, simon for example), I suppose that people like them can be dangerous if you do not agree with them ?

Jus curious, docwilliam, why you included in parentheses the 'and Catholic' part....that's something that doesn't usually play into the equation here on pbh so much. Not to say it's not discussed, but not the second or third thing brought up about the ladies.

yeah, doc...i'm a catholic too...went through way too many marriages (other posts) with non catholics. finally...nineteen years now...although not without a shit load of ruffage, we're still a family and will be til the end. i should make a true point. the reason for the divorces was my daliance and i bare the guilt. it wasn't until i married in the church, in santa barbara in envigado, that i began to tow the line.
