Now that’s what I’m talking about, Barranquilla!!!
I’ve been to many cities in the USA and let me tell you, Barranquilla’s skyline beats most, only NYC is far more impressive, but if you catch Barranquilla from a distance and at the right angle, if not for the fact that your sweating like pig, you’ll think you re arriving in Manhattan. Don’t laugh modefoque, I mean it. I will grant you this, the southern part is a shit hole but the new northern Curramba is the best city I’ve seen in Colombia. My young paisa wife was dying to show off Medellin and I finally decided to see what the hell she was talking about, nice, a dozen or so apt. buildings nestle up in the mountains but you need a car to get around and this is suppose to be the premier Colombian city. Honestly, thought very clean and organize I was not impress; I found Barranquilla far more modern, bigger and busy with commerce, entertainment. etc. I will not comment on other cites but if Medellin suppose to be the best, then I know the others just wont rate and not worthy of my very honest and un bias evaluation. I challenge anyone to come up with a more impressive skyline of their city than the picture on this Barranquilla site. Sorry if I’m overly Barranquillero, but today I’m expecting butifarras and bollo blanco from a friend arriving from Miami, they get all that stuff down there.

PROUD ENEMY OF THE RIGHT WING!!!!!! THANK YOU!

i always go to Cartagena. i only been to Barranquilla on a layover at the airport. i did'nt see any skyline. just a bunch of shanty houses. i heard its boring for gringos and you can't find a park bench to sit on. i also heard there is'nt much of a beach. who wants to be in a hot city without a beach? i guess i'll still check it one day. supposing you don't have family or friends there, what can you do in Barranquilla that you can't do in Cartagena?

elmodefoque says on Aug 26, 2005, 08:44:

Hey morphus, you crazy modefoque, first of all, we aint got no beach in Barranquilla and who the hell wants to sit in a park when is 120 degrees and there’s a bunch of fine big ass drunken Barranquilleras in the many bars and clubs of curramba. If you want tranquility, peace and quiet then I guesses Medellin, Cali Bogotá etc. would be more suited but be on the look out for guerrilleros, something which is very unfamiliar to Barranquilla. I gotta add, I love Cartagena too, but it aint no Curramba.

Damn, Elmo I have been pretty impressed with MDE. Maybe I'll have to invest some time in traveling up the coast. I have met many fine chicas de BAQ in CTG.

just to remind you guys, the most beautiful and most famous women in all colombia, shakira and sofia vergara come from barranquilla and i doubt they grew up in shanty houses.

Miguel says on Aug 26, 2005, 09:09:

Barranquilla The airport is actually in Soledad. There is no beach, not even a sh``ty one. For meeting "fine chicas de BAQ", tomtom, just pop over to La Curramba on an Invertours buseta and don't hurt your (eye) balls.

elmodefoque says on Aug 26, 2005, 09:40:

Barraquilla’s airport is actually nestled between Malambo and Soledad, put them together and you come up with a nice big pile of smelly dog shit. You might think I’m crazy but I’ve partied a lot in Soledad, in a so called nigh club which is really a dust bowl surrounded by a 10 feet high wall, and a bunch of hanging light bulbs dangerously connected to wires, an electrician’s nightmare. I would venture to say that the corroncho who did the wiring has never opened a book about electrical safety and codes.

Invertours I have their number. A friend of mine from Chicago is coming down in Nov. and has been bugging me about going to BAQ. I am concerned about my eye balls, though. Those Quilleras can be hard on an old man.

toneloc24 says on Aug 26, 2005, 10:57:

I'm with Migs and Elmo People get the wrong idea when they think the airport area represents anything about Barranquilla. Once you clear Soledad, things look very much different. It definitely ain't as picturesque as Medellin, but all of Medellin isn't Poblado either. Those barrios on the hills? Nothing nice to see either.

The skyline of Barranquilla that Elmo speaks of is as seen from the right angle. LOL!!!! They have been building up a storm in El Norte. The new Dann Carlton is a top-notch facility.

I could give a rat's ass who flames me for saying this, but I dare you to prove me wrong:

In my opinion, BAQ is the heart of Colombia. Partying in Barranquilla is the closest thing you'll get to partying in a true Colombian environment. Nothing like it in Colombia.

The people??? Wow!!! Yes, there are rich folks there in BAQ in EL Norte or Prado, etc. Buena Vista is eye candy heaven, esp. on the weekends and nights. But then again, so is El Centro during the day. Some of those lawyers? Wow!!! I've yet to meet fewer pretentious people in a Colombian city. I have standing offers to join several cumbias for the next Carnaval, as well as a place to stay. LOL!!!

Discos like Cielo, La Quinta, Maria Mulata in La Victoria, Juanito's, Vallenato, etc., bars like Tropical Cocktails, La Cama, Luna Negra, the bars on 79, and many others that I've gone to but was so drunk I forget the names now. For those down and dirty folks like myself and Elmo, La Troja and Arinosa!!! Plenty of eye-candy in each of these locales.

As this site is named Poor But Happy, I challenge anyone to find a happier bunch of broke folks than those in La Victoria. That is not meant in any way as a slight, but they make do with what they have. Money isn't everything. Life goes on. Taxis are very honest. Never experienced a problem, outside of crazy driving.

Outside of Puerto Colombia's half-assed beach, there's no beach to speak of in BAQ. However, it's only located 90 mins away from Cartagena in one direction, and Santa Marta in the other direction. Invertours is the greatest. I swear by them for great service. For working folks, there are other options. And the beaches in Santa Marta flat out are better than other in mainland Cartagena.

During the week, outside of Buena Vista (again) and the other shopping malls, the museums and universities in El Prado, the zoo, cheap shopping in El Centro, it does get boring. But the same can be said for every other Colombian city during the week.

Now regarding this BAQ website, still a lot of work to be done. However, I hope they do as good a job of representing their city as my previous experiences there have me coming back for more.

Matter of factly, I think I'm ready to get back there. Let's see what Avianca's rates are looking like.

Tone: El Otro Alcalde de Barranquilla Buen dicho señor. And as always, Elmo is almost full of shit. His astute observation that the airport is located between Malambo and Soledad does not come from his years of first hand experience in La Curramba. I told him that the mailing address of the airport was in Soledad, and then all of a sudden our modofoque discovers the google world website, and at the expense of his employer, uses their high tech computers to research all this shit. If you want to see what a great skyline Barranquilla has, take the tourist tren from the port to the mouth of el rio Magdalena. You are standing on a rock point surrounded by fishermen living in cardboard shacks without water or electricity viewing a very vibrant Barranquilla, three miles in the distance.
No jodas monocuco.

toneloc24 says on Aug 29, 2005, 07:11:

Again, Migs, from the "right" angle. From Rio Magdalena or Soleda, is not the right angle. LOL!!!

Forgive Elmo, you know he gets excited when he hears anything about BAQ and defends it to the fullest, esp. when he's currently living in the hellhole called NYC!!!

Miguel is right; I had no idea where the hell the airport was until I looked it up on google earth. com. When I was a kid we had no need to venture out to the airport it would have taken me hours (my burro was very slow) from el barrio abajo, Barranquilla to Malambo. And what the hell was I gonna do there anyway, is not like we needed to hop on a plane to go and travel to San Andres on a family vacation.
At age 10, I don’t remember much about my first ride to the airport, at that moment I was more concerned about leaving my burra and I was still very upset about getting my long hair cut and now looked like every little Colombian dick head, something which brought my grandfather great shame and heartache.

ELMO ! Elmo, you party in Soledad? You must be nuts! hahaha. When you party in Soledad, hope you are wearing some body armor, carrying at least 2 pistols, a shotgun and 3-4 knives.

elmodefoque says on Aug 29, 2005, 12:26:

soledad is now the most popular place for barranquilleros from "barrios populares" to party. Is the cheapest place to go to and like tone was saying, you get to enjoy the real colombia. Partying with the rich barranquilleros is no different than partying in miami, but places like soledad is the real sweaty down and dirty deal.

Elmo I went to Maria Mulata's in July with like 4 other people. I doubt that there was a cover charge, but they (staff) gave us a great table and knew we were the jackpot for the night.

We polished off 3 bottles of Colombian whiskey, definitely don't remember the name, plus untold amounts of beer. Gave the waiters a healthy tip, as they made sure that everyone was enjoying themselves there.

Being that I was the sole single dude there that night, he made a point to steer some of the more beautiful chicas in the direction of our table to introduce them to me. I wasn't disappointed. By the end of the night, my friends' novias had dubbed me "mujeriego." I wore that title proudly. Tough decisions.

In defense of the norte clubs, except Frogg Leggs, I've had great times at La Quinta as well. Same set-up, but with aguardiente and cervezas.

Now Soledad? Elmo you can have it.

BAQ says on Aug 29, 2005, 15:49:

I agree Elmo, I agree, it is "Down and dirty" if you want to party, I have no problem with that. The problem I have with Soledad is the crime. They have more killings there than any other place in or near barranquilla. Kinda like sayin if you want good "Soul food" go eat at a restaurant in Harlem, or go to South Central LA for some good home cooked mexican food. Yea, its great food but like I posted before, make sure you wear some body armor and take a few guns.

Baq, I gotta tell you, the first time I partied in Soledad was in 1979, my first trip back home. My then sister’s boyfriend (now husband) a real 100% corroncho taxi driving modefoque took us there. My first impression was one of shock, but after a few drinks I was dancing and enjoying myself like the locals. You can’t blame me for being shock just a couple days before I was hitting the most popular discos in the greatest city in the planet, NYC, and the next day I’m partying in one of the biggest most dangerous shit hole on earth, but now Soledad is always a favorite spot along with La Troja and other respectable establishments in Quilla. I’m still amazed at how down to earth girls from lower strata are compared to the middle class barranquilleras. A few months back I invited my niece, 3 nephews and their very pretty girlfriends, all broke ass modefoques to calle 79 or 82 st. Curramba to party with the middleclass crowd, but the girls insisted in going to Soledad, and that blew me away, these girls are as pretty and in their case prettier than any of the girls you’ll find in the best clubs in Barranquilla, yet, they chose Soledad because it had that real authentic carnaval spirit. Another place to party like a corroncho is el barrio Simon Bolivar.

I miss Barranquilla
after seeing those photos of Barranquilla, I sure do miss it. Although my ex-fiance lives in Soledad and she said that she was going to call the federal authorities of colombia to make sure that I could never return there to Colombia,(I doubt that she could do that) I do miss Barranquilla very much, and would love to return.
