Well. It is the statue of la India from Cartagena. However, wouldn't you see some buildings from the city? Is it a shot of a replica? They sure seem to sell millions of them.

ColombianoGringo says on Feb 28, 2008, 09:59:

That was easy. Anyone who's been in a Cartagena souvenir joint should know that.

Now, this one should be harder. Like the previous pic, it is a monument in Colombia commemorating a native princess.

The monument to India Catalina was sculpted by Eladio Gil Zambrana and presented to the public in 1974. Small scale replicas are used in the Cartagena Film Festival awards.

India Catalina

India Catalina (c. 1495 – c. 1529), was an indigenous woman (almost certainly Calamari) from the Colombian Atlantic coast, who accompanied Pedro de Heredia and played a role in the Spanish conquest of Colombia, acting as interpreter and intermediary. In Colombia today, India Catalina remains as an icon of the extermination of the Precolumbian inhabitants. Her life has plenty of similarities with the Mexican La Malinche.

History
Catalina was abducted in 1509 by Spanish conqueror Diego de Nicuesa in an indigenous settlement known as Zamba o Galerazamba, where she was the daughter of the local chief. She was sent to Santo Domingo, where she learned the Spanish language and adopted the Catholic religion. As a requirement of Pedro de Heredia, she served as an interpreter to the Native Americans and after that she married Alonso Montañez, Pedro de Heredia's nephew.

The events of the Spanish conquest in the area of modern Cartagena ended with the complete annihilation of the Calamari people.

jonas says on Feb 28, 2008, 14:26:

CG I have been to Neiva but I was really taking a wild guess only referring to the river, heat and the altitude of the sculpture that seems to be atop of the forest. I guess it´s on top of the teleferico?
You bet I will be in Neiva again for San Pedro, what a wild party, and the cabalgata de las 1000 mujeres beats anything else...

What I have, I do not want to lose, but Where I am I do not want to stay, but those I love, I do not want to leave, but those I know I no longer want to see, but Where I die, I do not want to go;I want to stay where I have never been

ColombianoGringo says on Feb 28, 2008, 14:59:

Yeah. Opitas on horseback are very nice. They are much nicer to look at than the many monuments in Neiva

jonas says on Feb 28, 2008, 15:06:

And last time I went, I admit it´s been 3 years, I didn´t spot any gringos at all so we better keep this quiet ;-)

ColombianoGringo says on Feb 28, 2008, 15:09:

Yep. You see the occasional European on their way to San Agustin, but in general there are not too many foreign tourists. Only a handful of PBHers have been and most of them are Colombians. Honestly, I would not go anywhere near El Huila as a foreigner. It is major FARC territory, especially in the South near San Agustin.

jonas says on Feb 28, 2008, 15:37:

Gringos, please, never, ever, go to Huila. Thank you.

LilaM says on Feb 28, 2008, 18:32:

Colombiano gringo, the first one is La india Catalina, I think that the statue was moved from the original place that she used to be in Cartagena. Until 2006 it was
on the intersection between Venezuela and Pedro de Heredia avenues now is 12 far from the original place... people made a protest bc of this.
the second picture is similar to the Monumento a los lanceros en El pantano de Vargas in Boyacá,,,. but is la Gaitana, in Neiva Huila.
Aaron that one is the Loch Ness Monster jajajajjjaja. So that one is Nessie....
And colombiano gringo that could be on any street of colombia... but i think is at a festival in Neiva.

Liza that looks like not just Tahoe, but Emerald Bay to be precise ;) It's also one of my favorites.

ColombianoGringo says on Feb 29, 2008, 15:29:

How about this place? I would be surprised if anyone can guess. It is in Colombia.

Lisa Zee says on Feb 29, 2008, 15:30:

Yeah Emerald Bay on the west side and California side. I love the summer, I only try to go in summer, I lived there and the winter killed me and my car, even if it is 345 days a year sunny. but I love the beach. this is the only place you can have clothing optional, bring your dog, booze. it is paradise if you can`t go to Colombia.

ColombianoGringo says on Feb 29, 2008, 15:32:

Is that near Squaw Valley?

Lisa Zee says on Feb 29, 2008, 15:35:

Yes Squaw Valley is in Tahoe.

billyb says on Feb 29, 2008, 15:37:

It's between tahoe city and south shore, on the cal side like Liza said.

"but I love the beach. this is the only place you can have clothing optional"

What beach do you hang out BTW :) was it Manhattan?

ColombianoGringo says on Feb 29, 2008, 15:37:

I know that. I meant is Emerald Bay more or less on the same side of lake as Squaw?

billyb says on Feb 29, 2008, 15:40:

Yes but further south.

Lisa Zee says on Feb 29, 2008, 17:26:

I go to the east shore beaches. by highway 28 on the way to Carson City. Sand Harbor is the nice big beach, but it is for the `turistas`. there are many other ones on that area, like Hidden Beach, that is the best to me,sssshhhhh!, but I better stop about L.T. it would be better if it does not get more popular. It is like Medellin, once people knows of a good place it starts to get too many darn people.
If we all start to post our favorite places in the world this post will have no end LOL.

Tejas- is that in colombia? shit after seeing all these pics I would like to do some traveling around this wonderful country.

Lisa Zee says on Feb 29, 2008, 17:47:

I know where that is, but I`ll let someone guess. IT is gorgeous Tejas!

Lake Tahoe, get in the 80`s, but mostly mid 70`s, I like it hot, because I love to swim and the water is cold, I could go on for ever..........

Texan's like to ski?? I've been there once for a week long ski trip and it was pretty awsome.

tejasmarcos says on Feb 29, 2008, 17:56:

the folks from colorado don't take kindly to our type on the slopes. we make them look bad....... californians are pretty cool though, especially in the tahoe area. they are reeeeeeal mellow if you know what i mean........

ColombianoGringo says on Feb 29, 2008, 18:13:

We may live in Texas, but we love skiing in these parts.

Tahoe is nice, but the best skiing in the US is by far in the Wasatch range near Salt Lake City. Snowbird, Alta, Park City and many more are in the area and there is simply no better powder in the US.

I've been to every major resort in Colorado, but I stopped going once I discovered Utah. Even Steamboat's powder doesn't rate next to Utah's.

tejasmarcos says on Feb 29, 2008, 18:19:

ahhhhhh, champagne powder in utah - nice and dry. some of the best pow in n. america.

spent most of my time in "the canyons", but i think snowbird is some of the best in that area.

Yes indeed, La Ponderosa is a turistic side now, where they filmed Bonanza. It is by Incline Village.
I can`t wait `till it gets warmer to go, I start going in May.
Great map Lucas F. Tantarantan....., I used to watch Bonanza when I was a little girl!

ColombianoGringo says on Feb 29, 2008, 18:40:

tm,

I personally like Alta. It is very laid back and they don't allow snowboarders so all the steeps don't get scraped off. I got stuck in powder up to my chest there once.

tejasmarcos says on Feb 29, 2008, 18:53:

never made alta - we were snowboarding ;)

Mario says on Feb 29, 2008, 18:59:

CG, you're right - the powder on Heavenly can suck. Even though I almost had my left leg amputated and the calf had to be reconstructed, I can still ski the Mambo, among others, but I was warned away from The Face by my ex. She wanted me alive... I love the sign at the top of The Face - "WARNING - A Fall Can Result In A Long Tumble Down".

Saw someone break their neck on that one the last time I was there, doing a flip on a snowboard. Tahoe is the tits! Ooops, can I still say that?

There's a new topic for the "Off Topic" section: What shows were on TV when you were a kid?

For me? Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Courtship of Eddy's Father, My Favorite Martian, The Lone Ranger, The Twilight Zone, Lassie, Hmmmmm - Outer Limits, The Shadow, Family Affair, Bewitched, Brady Bunch, Gilligans Island and before that the show with Bob Denver as a beatnik, I forget the name .... Dobie Gillis? I DREAM OF F****** JEANIE!!!! I was having wet dreams of Barbara Eden before I was capable of them... (if that makes any sense - adolescent lust to the extreme).

Mario says on Feb 29, 2008, 19:13:

Lucas Freley says on Feb 29, 2008, 19:48:

Lisa, you will be happy to know they have stopped most developement there, to try to regain that legendary water clarity (the clearest in the US). CG, the weather in the summer is usually between the high 70 and low 80s. The water is cold as shit, even in the summer, but great to get rid of a hangover.

Mario says on Feb 29, 2008, 20:04:

Lucas Freley says on Feb 29, 2008, 20:14:

Billyb, voy a seguir tu consejo como el de Lisa. Mi proximo viaje a Estados Unidos va a ser a Nevada !!!!!!! Pero no Las Vegas...sino el Lago Tahoe. Gracias !!!

Mario, in Uruguay. They have the gauchos as well, and the cows are the same. El asado rioplatense is the best of the World by far ;)

Lisa Zee says on Feb 29, 2008, 20:44:

Billy, the water is cold but I think there are some places where the water is more shallow, that is not so cold.

I think Bonanza was shown in Colombian TV many years later, they had to translate the TV shows.

billyb says on Feb 29, 2008, 20:50:
