If you have a friend coming that would be great otherwise it is smarter to buy one here

If you ship it the import duty will likely eliminate any benefit -vs- buying a computer locally. The best way to get it there is with someone's carryon luggage.

If you are planning on buying a new laptop, Look at Dell, they have models from COP$1,300,000 to COP$1,800,000. And their is no IVA up to COP1,808,000. The price includes delivery and customs.

You can have the laptop shipped to a freight forwarder in Miami(but some places dont ship to freight forwarders)
I beleive the freight forwarder charges like $60(that includes everything and to the door) to ship a laptop from Miami to Colombia.
Or you can send the money for the laptop to the freight forwarder and have him buy the laptop himself at Costco/Best Buys of Miami and send it to Colombia for you.

Ship it USPS to Servientrega in Miami and then have them send it door to door guaranteed delivery 2-3 days to Colombia. Servientrega costs should be well under $40. Google the site here on PBH for Servientrega's Addrees and Phone Number. Servientrega is a very reputable shipper and based in Miami west of the Airport and just a few doors down from Avainca Air Express.

all above is good advice, however the best is bring your hard drive with you if you have serious stuff you dont want to lose on it and buy here then reinstall, but if your sending to a friend work something else out or ISPN it if you can but realy its not wise to send valuable stuff anywhere especialy data, I lost a whole album of music at heathrow 6 months work, ha the worlds a safer place.

AB-Last Time I used SERVI no 28% charge, in fact they never charged me a % of the value.

AB- BTW, How many Times have you used Servi where they charged you 28%?

I used them as recently as November and was asked to pay the 28%. The 28% was on the value that I listed to them.

Did you take the Laptop out of the Box and Original packaging and claim it as used?

Papi de Alejo says on Feb 24, 2008, 12:08:

I did not send a laptop. The point that I was making was that they asked me the value of the items that I was sending, accepted my value and charged the 28% on top of that. I suppose that I could have told them that the items had no commercial value (NCV)and avoided the 28%. I don't like to do that. With NCV, if the package is lost, so is whatever I paid for it. I do understand what you are saying.

I used Servientrega to ship 30 boxes......27 arrived.........I do not consider them trustworthy. They stole a lot of money from me.

Arthur, I tried to use JJ but they never answer the phone.

I used a bs value on a lap top I sent ($$ 200) and I still got hit with having to pay 100.00 in tax. The best way to send it is find someone on this site that you can trust who is making a trip down to Colombia shortly. Good Luck.
