Is this the way you hire teachers? This does not sound like a very professional way to hire a person that will be working with youngsters.

It DOES sound bogus|

CaritadeAngel says on May 2, 2007, 20:08:

Yes, you did miss something.
Experienced teachers have seen a lot of life.

In particular, they've all seen

(1) The magic disappearing contract
(2) The magic disappearing salary
(3) The sleazy sex-pest boss (the case of all the women and some of the men).
(4) The magic disappearing-reappearing employment visa

etc etc

They need more information, for example, who are you, what's the pay, the class sizes, the textbooks, holidays, insurance, and what kind of person you are looking for?

A company website and an email address that goes with it also lends credibility, and you should also post your Cert. of Registration with the Camera de Comercio. Do this, and you may get a more favourable response.

In the world of ESL teaching, there are some extremely unscrupulous employers out there. Your post is very short on detail, and it makes it difficult for teachers to take you seriously. Even if you do get a response you should be prepared for a lot of questions.

Cheers

Carita

very good post Carita! i'm teaching english.. and agree with everything you said!
typically good schools dont need to advertise on web. just like the goods jobs are never advertise.

That said, if you do advertise a job position, you(employers) should list more info as you stated Carita.

How about that? And to think I was just about ready to close up my law practice and take advantage of this terrific opportunity........thank God for PBH.

CaritadeAngel, sent up the warining flags and caught this scammer before I on anyone else got hurt.

I have to admit Carita, you really give an excellent response. Good job.

Thanks: a few tips on how to get your money. Thanks... and incidentally, if you do end up with dodgy employer, and need a sure fire way to get your money, mention the tax-man.

Oh they can bribe the police oh yes.

And they fear not Immigration.

But he that cheats the teacher, cheats the tax-man also, and it doesn't matter how corrupt the country is, you can't bribe the tax-man to look the other way. Oh no. He works for the Big Boss. And in all developing countries the Big Boss is one scary dude.

What bad schools fear most is having the tax man crawl up their bottoms with an oversized magifying glass. Yeah, I get deported. But YOU...you get the TAX-MAN. Oh so you fiddled my wages, misstated my hours, and didn't sponsor my visa? We'll see what the TAX MAN has to say about that.(Sound of screeching violins). So you're going to pay me (mafia smile, the kind the Godfather gives when he's reasoning with someone) aren't you?

I did that twice in South Korea and once in Mexico ... works a treat. Its so successful that I am the only cheated teacher I have ever heard of that got their back salary after I actually left Korea. I faxed them from India with my bank account details and told the school if they didn't pay, the Tax Man a-commeth. They paid. Should've asked them for 10 times more, come to think of it ;-)

Always negotiate your contract, if you can. The more teachers who do this the easier it gets for everyone else to do it. I actually have something to that effect on my teaching CV. “I will always negotiate my contract with you, even if your other foreign teachers signed the one you have written. If you are not comfortable with contract negotiation, do not hire me. I now have contract drafting experience so I get schools to sign MY contract, after we negotiate hours, class sizes, dispute resolution etc. I have a Colombian lawyer friend here who says that complaisance with the black-letter of contracts is normal here, (unlike east Asia) but you know, ESL teachers always see the worst of the worst when it comes to dodgy employment practices.

I found this site to be really cool regarding law for English Teachers. I'm not teaching here, so I don't know the scene, but you may find it useful: www.efllaw.com.

Thanks Appreciate your comments, I really do. However, I don´t agree with all of them. Sometimes good employers do need to advertise on the web, especially growing companies. Not everyone has a name like Berlitz.

As for not replying to you Vic, I will shortly be sending a reply.

Yes, we do have a website. It´s at www.inglesbogota.com

And we do have a Camara de Comercio registration. I won´t be posting it here, but you can look it up on the computers at the C de C offices.

Like I said at the beginning, I do appreciate your comments, but a short advert doesn´t necessarily mean that the company behind it is hiding from something.

If you´re interested, please send your CV. I frequently answer teachers´ specific questions by email.
