Need information on this bat

I found this bat in the middle of the sidewalk.

I'm sure if I didn't pick it up someone would have stepped on it.

The bat is "hanging" on my finger. Definitely a baby and unable to fly.

At first it looked like a fat harry worm of some kind. I tried to move it with a stick and it OPENED MOVED ITS FEET / WINGS !!!

What do baby bats eat when they can't fly ? This one looks like it is a little big for "mothers milk" but what do I know about bats ?

Right now it is "hanging inside the "basket woven" laundry hamper.

The full grown bat is quite small. My guess is that this baby is about 1/4 the size of an adult.

Its a fruit bat so try some fruit. Masticate some mangos, figs and other fruits. Flowers are also a big part of their diet.

Just don't feed it a typical american diet or else it will go into immediate cardiac arrest. Why not ask some of the locals?

Found it during night or day? If you found it during the day, be careful. It may be sick or even have rabies.

Probably a female - don't ask me why I guessed this if you want go out tonight and run as fast as you can through the street light with your mouth open

Ha, ha,

I GOGGLED but I'm on a SLOW connection,, not a very pleasant experience.

One site said MOTHER BATS have one or two babies (if only humans could do the same),, Oh,, I digress,, if the mother is "surprised" she might "drop" the baby. I'd guess that is what happened because the baby was on the sidewalk under a group of LARGE, Tall trees.

Tbe little sucker has a strong grip. It was difficult transfering him to the inside of the clothes hamper lid.

I don't think it is full grown. The bat in that photo is a fully growed Bumblebee bat

I have some bats "hanging around the house". The girl I'm with HATES the bats but they don't bother me,, unless one hangs out above the bed.

This is a picture of the bats,, and not a good photo,, I took MANY photos but something about the auto focus,, or maybe they are vampire bats,, you know,, can't be seen in a mirror ? or correctly focused upon with my cola cam ?

I thought this was ONE BAT. Nope,,, two and the only two on the ceiling of the house and there were REALLY CLOSE. Tends to make me think this is a male and female. They were hanging out in the light. Probably arrecho ?

I recommend rabies vaccination before you spend too much time with bats anywhere in SA. My doc said I should get the vaccination if I would be around them. Costs $400, so I said maybe later.

Bat seems to be better Crushed some papaya and mixed it with cows milk. Feed it with a soaked Q-Tip. The bat licked the mixture off its ugly nose.

Rabies,, hummm, I don't think it has teeth. The bat is about the size of regular sized spoon.

This photo was taken before it ate. It hangs a little better now. Still, I think it is a goner.

So cute! I know some in the pacific, like JUANCHACO Valle. we used to have a house there, actually in LADRILLEROS, and we had to sleep with a lantern on. They like blooooood. The bats would nibble on your toes and ears. But this one is so small and cute. Does it have a name?. I hope it makes it.

cute little critter I doubt you have to worry about getting rabies from him, but those other ones you took pics of might be a risk.

My doc showed me a map of where rabies was known to be in Colombia, it wasn't all over, just certain areas near the borders if i recall. no idea if you are in a bad area or not, but I'm a worrier, i'd ask about it.

The bat seems to be doing better The little critter must be tough. The tree it fell out of is over 60 feet tall. I found him on the sidewalk so there might be internal injuries. I doubt he did any "gliding".

I made him a "bat house" out of a jewelry box, some leaves and shredded paper. He seemed to like the leaves. Plus, the bat seems like laying flat on his stomach.

I took him into town inside his "bat house". As suspected, no one knew anything about baby bats. The bat drew quite a crowd. I thought it might be a month old but folks thought it was only a week.

The recommendation was powdered milk with a vitamin supplement. I soaked a Q-Tip, stuck it near his face, actually put some liquid ON HIS FACE.

The bat LOVED it !!! If the Q-Tip was a peach it wouldn’t have any fuzz.

Adorable I found the website of a bat researcher in panama:

http://www.stri.org/english/scientific_staff/staff_scientist/scientist.php?id=18

Someone at the Von Humboldt institution might be able to connect you with a local expert http://www.humboldt.org.co/humboldt/mostrarpagina.php?codpage=2000

Also maybe try contacting a local zoo? I've hear that Cali has a zoo.. or maybe the Botanical gardens in Bogota can hook you up with an expert?

Good advice he might get some Cotton from the Q-tip

The bat has teeth,, I guess, because he sunk them onto a strand of cotton. Had to pull it out of his mouth. Ha, biting the tit that feeds it !!

D.A.S. wouldn’t let me stay in Colombia. Saving bats is not high on their priority list. I’m back in the U.S. and it took a while to get a new internet connection. A FAT PIPE to the internet. Humm, yesterday the speed was over 4 Megabits,,,, today::

Communications 3 megabits per second
Storage 361.2 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 2.8 seconds

Guess everyone is using the internet to watch Bernanke listen to clueless folks in congress ask him clueless questions and make speeches that highlight their cluelessness.

I digress:

I now use an eye dropper and remove the cotton from the stick,, or at least that was the idea before I left Colombia. The girl is not fond of the bat. I suppose the 1,450 pesos I spent on baby food seemed a little “over the top”.

Getting ready for a lick.

I constructed a BAT HOUSE (Casa de Murcielago)

The main house

The main house with exercise area.

Finished house – Minus hinged top

Talking about high tech !!! Glad to hear the bat's still alive...are you dropping the girl if the bat dies?

Nope,, that would be similar to cutting off your NOSE,, to spite your face. However, I may withhold sex when I return.

I've started to accummulate some "specialized" tools to construct Guadua bar stools.

The kitchen cabinets have a HIGH TECH,, super modern, PULLOUT_FORMICA LINED_ROLLER BEARING GLIDE HINGED,,,, TRASH DRAWER !!!! WoW,, only the rich can acquire such FINE craftsmanship,,

PS: Notice the Styrofoam cups in the adjacent cabinet. These have become almost a necessity of life.
