Need an Apartment This Summer

Need an Apartment/Room/Accommodation this summer (June, July, August)

I'm heading to Colombia for the summer to take some Spanish courses and volunteer with a couple organizations. I'm trying to find a good place to stay. Any thoughts or advice?? Thank you.

Staying in Colombia Hi Mary Jo:
There are lots and lots of choices to make. But the problem lies in where you want to stay and under what circumstances. There has been allot of discussion on this topic here. We rent out rooms and or an entire apartment. You can check out our website to see what the prices are like. I am thinking that it may be important for you to stay close to where you are volunteering. You have sufficient time to research all of this here before you head off to Bogota. You may even be able to find a good family to stay with and learn your Spanish allot faster. You may want to elaborate on what exactly you are looking for..in terms of area and/or price range. It is a good thing you are doing.

They offer several options www.bogotacolombialodging.com
They offer several options from rooms with and without services to full apartments.

I've stayed here, www.bogotacolombialodging.com about 10 times over the past few years.

You get a whole apartment for about $50 bucks a night, includes breakfast, internet, and free u.s. phone calls, the phone calls alone save me about $20 bucks a day.

Also very nice people and the owner is very knowledgeable and helpful about anything you need in Colombia.

Thank you for your advice and I will look into both locations. I'm looking for something in the Chapinero alto area since I was told this is close to the school I'll be attending for Spanish courses. I appreciate the help and I am also looking into the Homestay options.

Bogota places to stay Hi,
I live in Bogota. Before I often had problems finding a good place to stay. I all way's went to a hotel or hostel, I can recommend Platypus as a Hostal. Be sure to make your reservation on time. And with on time i mean months before! Manny times there was no place available. And i had to stay in some more expensive places. German the owner also showed me the reservation book and had reservation for more then 1 year.

Here after I tried to rent a apartment via real estate agency's I could not believe the requirements they all ask. I needed 2 people to guarantee (fiador) for me I had to deal with minimum contracts of at least 6 months. I told them that i would pay my whole stay in advance, i was willing to prepay and i still needed a 2 fiadores. I told them I also had real estate, that was nice but i still needed the two fiadores. So for me renting with real estate agents is no option.

I found out that by renting directly from owners is a better option as they have no or much less requirements.

If you are there you can buy a news paper: el tiempo
It is full of advertisements, you can call and go visit the location. I often found many other interested people within my apointment over there.

Most people are looking for a place in Chapinero or the center or the North near the embassy's and Zona Rosa. It is often expensive in my opinion. Out side those zones it is cheaper.

I also often rented rooms directly from owners in some barrio no matter where. Thats me. I even stayed somewehere that even taxi drivers told me they will not enter that barrio but willing to leave me at an entrance to the barrio that 's close to where i live. Some times I still do not understand certain people there.

What i am trying to say is that outside the barrios like Chapinero and the north its much cheaper and more safe. The transport system transmillenio is very fast so be sure to look for something close to a transmillenio stop or station.

After allways having problems finding something i like I decided to just buy a house or apartment there of what is much easier as renting. Just pay and they give you the house.

It is very difficult to say or advice where you could stay. As everyone has it own requirements for the place.

For me the house I bought in Bogota is good located not to expensive and safe. Very close to the transmilenio that will take me anywhere i wanna go. I do not need a lot of space so I just occupied myself in the the top floor of the house. I'm not always in Bogota on the moment I am in the Netherlands. So I decided I could rent out some rooms.
