Conchale Vale!! says on Aug 4, 2007, 14:19: If I remember correctly in another post (I think that one is gone now) La Mona recommended a prenup ..so it's good there are people on here listening jajajajaj If I recall he is 44 and she is 20....so a lawyer is a good idea. Russian Fred are you planning to stay in Colombia or are you returning to the US? The problem with prenups and international marriages are they may not hold up once you leave where they were written. Foe example if you have one in Colombia and then you decide to go to the US and bring the wife I.E. you sign the affadfits of support to get her here..well that document you just signed can blow away that prenup depending upon what is written in it. Same way if you go the route of bringing a girl on a fiance visa and then try to do a US prenup covering your grounds,,,you signed a support doc to get her there. International prenups are 10 times more complicated than one for 2 peopl in the same country and those many times don't hold water

gringoloid says on Aug 4, 2007, 19:26: Right off the bat Fred, you are in trouble! You say you are getting married next month. If that is the case you should have made the pre-nup about 5 months ago. If push comes to shove, she can say she was pushed into that contract and did not have time to think. Who are the three blind men? 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Robert Jorge says on Aug 4, 2007, 23:34: Gringoloid is absolutely correct. Even between two US citizens, a prenup can be useless, void, contested successfully - if it is less than 6 months old at the time of marriage. If you get a prenup a month before your wedding, you are wasting your time and money. It won't hold up in front of a judge. Now, add that the spouse is in a different country, the immigration paperwork involved ... don't even waste your time. If you are that concerned, call it off!!! miamimike says on Aug 5, 2007, 01:56: My Buddy here in Florida had his ex-wife sign a pre-nup in english and spanish. They divorced 12 months or so after the marriage and it helped. Another bit of advice from him-he traveled all the way from florida to Bogota just to be present when the Novia picked up the Visa so he could get his Financial Statements he had to provide to Immigration when he sent the completed Fiancee Visa forms to his wife. They return these to the Novia at the time of the Visa Pickup! He wanted, for a period of time, to maintain his total financial worth private from his Wife so his True Worth would not become a TOPIC FOR FUTURE family Conversation. It worked, he got the papers and his Worth remained secret,,,the Marriage didn't LOL That lasted a year,,,LOL My Avatar-- Sarah Palin Says " "You know the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom?? houstongal says on Aug 5, 2007, 09:59: To me, the marriages that last a year or two indicate that one party was getting married to gain something (when we talk about marriages to Colombianas). They were able to put up a charade that life would be wonderful, but it changed once they were married. I often wonder what's the rush? I can understand it if you wanted to start a family, but if not then why get married (I admit, I'm probably one of those few women who don't have this romantic view of marriage...I'm a practical thinker) Again, for most of the men on PBH the reason is to bring their wife to the US. But in your case gringoloid, you're in Colombia, your fiancee is in Colombia....I think that's different. It's almost like two Colombians getting married. At which point, the longevity of your marriage will be the effort to keep the romance alive (i.e., not getting tired of each other after 20 years). I think I'm channeling Dr. Phil this weekend.... miamimike says on Aug 5, 2007, 12:35: HoustonGal-Marriages that last only a year or two may not surive just for the resons you describe and here's why: in many cases the two don't share a common langauge so how do they communicate? Communication is extremely important in the first year or so of marriage so its of Extreme importance both understand each other in a Common langauge. Next, if the Wife comes to the USA, she has a problem in many cases of Culture Shock unless she is in a City like Miami where 80% or so of the population speaks spanish. And in most(not all) cases if the Guy is from Miami, he won't be going much to Colombia as he can meet all the Latinas he wants right here in south florida. So someone may not necesarily marrying someone for "interes" to gain something, simply lack of the langauge and cultural shock. houstongal says on Aug 5, 2007, 12:50: I completely agree miamimike. Marriage is tough enough without all the other stuff getting in the way. But I still think people getting married after a couple of years of courtship from a distance doesn't help. I understand the need if they're trying to be in one location, but we all know that it's quite different having a long-distance relationsihp versus a day-to-day one. I even think it's crazy for people in the same location to get married after a short courtship (even moreso if they're both very young). But who am I to say anything. But I think grigoloid's situation is different, and thus a better likelihood to succeed (in my opinion...based on what he's written). Conchale Vale!! says on Aug 5, 2007, 13:21: Houstongal and Miamimike are completely right on the head. I would say it is the big 4. Culture, Communication, Distance, and significant age difference. Any 1 of these can create issues if not discussed and understood prior to marriage can become a issue. No impossible to overcome just need to be understood. In a relationship with all 4 of those I say the chance for divorce goes up 10 fold. I believe most of these marriages fail because a lack of of communication and understanding of expectations and real discussions of what daily life will be like..not because of fraud to get to the US.. there is that but I don't think that is how it always starts. You are right Gringoloids chances are much better..they have time to really know each other in a real day to day situation.

Conchale Vale!! says on Aug 5, 2007, 14:09: I think his situation is great!! living in Colombia and having a girlfriend or getting married someday is really a normal relationship and the risks are like any realtionship. The age difference this is not really a issue when the girls is older also..she has already hopefully experienced enough to know what she wants in life at her age. It is completely different when you are thinking to marry a 20 year old. At 20 few people really have a grasp on what they really want in their life.

houstongal says on Aug 5, 2007, 14:19: OMG...I am such a different person now than when I was in my early 20's! What I even wanted out of life back then isn't what I want today. I do know of couples who married young and made it work, but I think they are the minority. I recently met a woman in her mid to late 20's who is getting married in a few weeks yet she didn't have one single good thing to say about her fiancee in the hour I spent with her. All she would do is complain that he's not romantic, doesn't pick up after himself, etc. I question how long that marriage will last!
