Human Rights Group Says Chances Improved of Finding WW II Nazi 'Dr. Death'
Tuesday, July 15, 2008

E-Mail Print Share:

SAN CARLOS DE BARILOCHE, Argentina — An international Jewish human rights organization is better positioned to find former SS Doctor Aribert Heim following a fact-finding mission in southern Chile and Argentina, the organization's director said Monday.

Efraim Zuroff, who heads the Israel-based Simon Wiesenthal Center, arrived in the region last Wednesday and has been conducting an investigation alongside the center's Latin American representative, Sergio Widder.

He wrapped up the trip on Monday.

"What we expected to do — and so far we have been successful — is to put in place the tools that will lead to his capture in the next few weeks — or at the most, months," Zuroff said.

"I think it is fair to say that we are in a better position today than we were before" the trip, he said.

Zuroff said center officials are "convinced that there are people who know the information and that this person can be found."

"A person this age cannot live on his own," he said. "Obviously people have to help him, they have to guard him, they have to be involved in this operation."

The center has insisted for years that Heim, who would be 94 if still alive, was in the Puerto Montt area in Chile, where a daughter of his has lived since the 1960s. San Carlos de Bariloche is located in Argentina, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) to the east of Puerto Montt.

Supporting the belief that Heim is alive are a multimillion-dollar bank account in his name and other investments that no one has claimed, Zuroff said. To do that, the claimant would have to produce proof that Heim was dead.

A reward of $495,000 is being offered jointly by the center and the German and Austrian governments for information leading to his capture. Heim tops the Wiesenthal Center's list of most-wanted Nazi war criminals.

A number of Nazis sought refuge in South America after World War II.

Heim was indicted in Germany on charges he murdered hundreds of inmates at Mauthausen concentration camp, where he was camp doctor. He was known as "the Butcher of Mauthausen."

He was held for two and a half years by the United States military but was released without being tried and disappeared in 1962, when he was tipped off that the indictment by German authorities was imminent.

At some point and time, the Holocaust as much of a horror as it was will simply have to to be put into the history books once and for all. As I said it was a terrible thing that happened. So is Darfur.
However, you will never see tracking parties well into the year 2100 looking for those criminals. Nor will you see monuments, charities, prime pieces of real estate set aside, organizations, both for and non profit for Darfur people or any of the other atrocities.
Frankly, I am tired of hearing about. I am an American. America had nothing to do with the Holocaust except in the last stages help bring it to an end. As it is pity to oppose good men against them, I wish we could make use of the Spaniard's Method, and hunt them with english dogs, supported by Rangers, and some Light Horse, who would I think effectively extirpate or remove that Vermine.

Amherst responded to Bouquet, in a letter dated 16 July 1763:

P.S. You will do well to try to Innoculate the Indians by means of Blanketts, as well as to try Every other method that can serve to Extirpate this Execrable Race. I should be very glad your Scheme for Hunting them Down by Dogs could take Effect effect, but England is at too great a Distance to think of that at present."

If you want to see a memorial to the Native Americans, there are many that you can visit. They are called reservations. They aren't very pleasant, but at least you get to witness suffering up close for a few moments until you decide leave.

Whether memorials function as deterrents of further atrocities is debatable and quite possibly doubtful; however, I see nothing wrong with such sites as they serve to educate people and at the same time pay tribute to those who have perished. Why pooh-pooh such an observance. It is not as if you have a choice between either a memorial or fighting current atrocities.

To tasco66 I feel some pity for the native Americans but if one takes the time to read and study you see how the Indian tribes fought amongst each other and you realize that no ethnic group is totally innocent of brutal acts. I found this gem "Herbert Boy and the other German Aviators of SCADTA (later to become Avianca) fitted their commercial planes for war as a temporary Colombian Air Force."

"The Colombo-German Air Transport Society (Spanish: Sociedad Colombo Alemana de Transporte Aéreo), or SCADTA, was Latin America's first airline, operating from 1919 until World War II. After the end of World War II, SCADTA merged with Colombian regional carrier Colombian Air Service (Spanish: Servicio Aéreo Colombiano), or SACO. Together, SCADTA and SACO formed the current Colombian Flag Carrier: Airline of the American Continent (Aerovías del Continente Americano, or Avianca). Avianca still operates to this day.

SCADTA started out as a small airmail carrier in Colombia, working with Junkers hydro-planes that were capable of landing in Colombia's Magdalena River, mostly due to the fact there were very few suitable landing strips in Colombia at the time. The company's German ownership motivated the U.S. government to subsidize Pan American World Airways expansion in Latin America under the Hoover administration. SCADTA was barred from operating flights to the US and the Panama Canal, although it continued to maintain a broad route network in the Andes region. The formation of Panagra in the 1930s further eroded SCADTA's position in the market. Prior to World War II, the principal shareholder, an Austrian called Von Bauer, secretly sold his shares to United States in an attempt to protect acquisition of the airline by the Nazi Government. In 1941, following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, SCADTA was forced to cease operations and its assets were merged by the Colombian government into the state owned airline SACO, forming the modern Colombian national carrier: Avianca."
